If I love anything more than my own children, it's bar food. Sometimes you just need to bury…read moreyourself in some greasy, fried food made under the music of Led Zeppelin or Sammy Hagar by a cook two packs deep and three shots in. As a solo eater this evening, I naturally ordered an appetizer and a burger, to get that full bar food effect. The appetizer was five (5) breaded jalapeño poppers. Those bad boys came out in the traditional paper boat only a bar can serve food in. It comes with ranch and when I popped that top off the little plastic ramekin, my heart melted more than when I saw a double rainbow. You guessed it. Home. Made. Ranch. You could put homemade ranch on a stick and I'd eat it. The poppers had that perfect breaded crunch, perfect amount of cream cheese filling, and good jalapeño taste. Poppers w/ life changing ranch 8/10. My main course was an olive burger. Nothing particularly popped out at me on the menu, so I just took my time scanning it and let the Bar of Influence™ guide me. I started with just the typical Bay de Noc burger, which is just "burger and bun." Direct quote. But I called an audible and decided to roll with the Olive Burger. Now, personally, I believe a top notch Olive Burger is made with an olive spread AND mayo. Not just olives and mayo. But, sometimes just that olive flavor calls and I don't care how I answer the phone. (To be clear, I answered the phone and it was just olives and mayo). Since I was feeling extra gluttonous, I added another patty. Stop. I know. I call myself those names, too. I do think that bonus patty might have been the patty that broke the camels back. Don't get me wrong, I polished it all off, but I felt degraded afterwards. OBDP (Olive Burger, Double Patty) 7/10. OBSP (Olive Burger, Single Patty) 7.75/10 "But what about the fries?" - You, probably. Okokok, relax. The fries were actually amazing. I never know the name/style of these fries (they looked normal with kind of like crispies stuck to them. Also kind of batter-y? I don't know. I'm not a potato). They had a crispy potato-y outside with a soft potato-y inside. They were the perfect doneness. Unknown Potato Style Fries 10/10. The ambiance was your typical bar type ambiance. High tables, low tables, pool table, juke box, tvs with sports, keno. Good spot. Go do it.

Buddy and I stopped in on our way to deer camp for some lunch…read more He had a burger and i got the walleye sandwich. Service was quick, and our waitress was helpful in getting anything we needed. My sandwich was a bit greasy, but tasted great. The waffle fries i ordered were also solid. No issues at all, decent food. If we ever are around later in the day, the pool tables they have would definitely get some use.

Usually, that's a possible issue. as there are no specialties and everything is mediocre. Not the case today,or when I visited with two friends a couple months back in June. Today, we enjoyed a fish dinner, schwarma, burger, and pretzel - quite a range! The Pickle Fries as an appetizer were a hit - a must try, perfect timing as the state fair is setting up for next week. Huge beer menu, local tastes and many from downstate and beyond. It all came out so quickly. I waited longer for a chicken sandwich at Wendy's in Gaylord on the way up here than I did for a full meal here. Their remodeled dining area has comfortable seats (boot today, table on the previous visit) and is well-lit. Those that wanted to watch live sports could do so while having a great dining experience. Highly recommended. especially over local places with similar menus like Herford and Hops, but much better food and service here.

The typical old wood vibe of many UP establishments that have survived the test of time. A spot for pool in the back, guys pee in a trough instead of urinals LOL, there's chalkboard doors with drink specials, random musical performances, a patio out back for hangin and smoking, it's just a great place to enjoy the Yooper life and meet a local or five. It's an easy place to become a regular just based off of the bartenders alone (Tori is a gem, she won't fail to make you laugh). They have great merch like shirts, sweatshirts, stickers, pins, shot glasses, etc. (I designed a few of their stickers while I was in college a decade ago, so glad to see they still sell them grab a buffalo drinking a PBR that I drew while drinking a $1 PBR at the Nickel one night in 2015). Popcorn is available, bubble hockey is a must, try a Nickelade or a green tea shot. I know they had a build your own Bloody bar at one point but I'm not sure if it's a regular thing anymore, if you see it happening don't miss it. Good price for a delicious bloody with all sorts of toppings and fresh cooked bacon! Great prices all around, good people, always a fun time at the Nickel

No complaints from either group! Portions were decent sized, feeding our hunger pangs for this meal & the next. Some of choices included the house poutine, skillet lasagna, marry me Alfredo, the filet, & yooper Wellington. Everything tasted great. Highly recommend the Wellington. It had a flaky, buttery crust wrapped around a tender, melt in your mouth filet. Save room for dessert. I don't care for bread pudding... Their cherry bread pudding changed my mind! It was delicious!!! It was like the combine the crispy parts of a cobbler with the soft gooey of a warm bread pudding, warmed it and then topped it with sweet cherries and vanilla ice cream!

The evening we were there they had small bluegrass type band that were a little loud for the smallish dining room, but it was very nice to have entertainment. Our waitress was working her butt off and was a little short at first, but was friendlier as our evening went on. I absolutely loved the French Onion Soup. Definitely in my top 5! For my main meal I ordered the Yooper Wellington which sounded so good I had to try it. The problem I had (which was clearly stated in the menu) was that the meat was cooked rare. Thought I could handle "rare" but turns out I couldn't handle this rare! Ended up taking a lot home... so I could cook it a little more! Nothing wrong with the flavor, it was just not my thing! I'm sure if I ordered anything else this would be a 5 star review because it was a nice place and I enjoyed everything else.
