Running has always been my preferred form of cardio. It's the activity that got me fit and is my old reliable. After a couple of years however, it just starts to get friggin boring to the point I have to force myself to get out there and get my miles in. Now that the weather is finally and mercifully starting to take a turn for the better in 2019, I decided to add a new dimension to my cardio and that landed me at the door of Cycling Republic (now called Trek Algonquin, BTW). Rob could not have been a nicer and more accommodating guy to work with. As a person that has not been on a bike since probably 7th grade, I had lots of questions and he graciously took his time with me. Trek bikes are all over the map as far as price and features, so unless you are already an expert coming to a place like this is probably your best move. After narrowing down what I was looking for and taking a couple of test rides around the adjacent neighborhood, I was ready to pull the trigger. They hooked me up with a couple of accessories, made all the adjustments to the bike specific to my bod, and made sure I understood the warranty and owners manual. I was also given a certificate for a free "tune up" to be done to the bike after a year of ownership. This was one of the more pleasant customer service experiences I have had in quite some time. Wow, just wow. Sometimes that it is all you can say about a business and its mission. I live in Chicago, about 45 miles away from this business but during my drive in their area, I decided to stop in and ask about a bike. (I had bought a bike at Village Cycle in my Old Town, Chicago neighborhood last year and it was not comfortable.) After talking with Zane, who, even though it was closing time, took his time to talk to me about my needs in a bike. I decided to buy a bike. Without hesitation, he picked out what turned out to be the perfect bike for me. Then, he made some recommendations, including that I could use a an app in lieu of the odometer I wanted to buy. I opted to buy the odometer because I wanted to be able to clock my exercise everyday since I can't go to the gym. The fact that he offered a solution that allowed me to avoid buying a gadget did not go unnoticed. That is the perfect customer service you want- a honest assessment. When I told him I wanted to be able to ride the bike the next day, he immediately set to work with his assistant. Realizing that the bike needed more time to set up, and knowing I lived about an hour away, he offered to come to his shop on the day it was closed so I could ride as I had initially said I wanted. Given these challenging times, he made certain to disinfect the bike before I took a test ride without me having to ask. (I am over 60 and well, that little touch could save my life). The shop itself is adorable. It is spacious, so clean, and just inviting. There is an old parking meter in the bathroom, so make sure to take a trip to that room. This will be the place I recommend to my friends and anyone who wants a connection to a bike shop. I'll be back for the bike carrier after I get the hitch. I would give this place zero stars if I could. I called to purchase a Burley Bike Trailer. They were to busy to set it up on the day I wanted to purchase it. I attempted to purchase it to assemble it myself but they insisted on store assembly. I agreed and arranged to look at it the next business day. Upon arrival in the parking lot I was told it was sold. I was then told money is what holds everything. A bit confused as I tried to purchase it the day before - says a lot about character. I took my Bob Jackson bike in after RAGBRAI for work on the headset. The mechanics in Iowa had damaged the headset and originally Cycling Republic said the headset would need to be replaced. Instead the mechanic took the time to manually file and restore the headset, protecting my bike while rebuilding the headset beautifully. Went in for spinning shoes and the young man working ( don't remember his name) was super helpful and he even put the spikes on the shoes for me, and showed me how I could adjust them at home.
