Actually, they get a zero star. not sure if the receptionist is related to the owner but Mr Travers should know that she drove me away as a customer for good. I called to try to get someone to come out to give me an estimate, just an estimate!. it'll take about 4 weeks if I want to be present and it'll take 2 weeks if I don't need to be present and let them do an estimate on their own. Then she proceeded to tell me that there's no way the job will start anytime between 4-6 weeks... so we're looking at 2 months minimum. In October, 2015 I accepted Traver's bid for removal of a large tree branch and additional tree trimming service. I knew that it might take 20-30 working days until they could get to the job. After that period passed, every time I called the office, I was informed that my job was on the list and they would come ASAP. The arborist never returned my calls. In April, 2016, Travers called to tell me that the work had been scheduled. Sorry Travers, I found another company that was responsive, did a great job and charged me less. Never again, Travers. Travers Tree service had us sign a contract with them for regular tree trimming service...They then refused to give us a specific date and after waiting 7 weeks for them to schedule us we finally called them, only to find that they still do not have a date for us to take care of our trees...I would strongly consider using another company. read more

I have been dealing with Travers since 1967 (47 years) when I moved to Manhattan Beach and had 18 pines trees. I am amazed how quickly they do the work and how neat they leave my place. I've used Travers several times over the the last 10+ years, and each time they've done an excellent job for a fair price. The crew leaves the trees looking healthy and not hacked up, and they always have cleaned up well afterward. Sometimes it takes awhile to get on their schedule and they require a signed contract before the work begins after they come out for an estimate, so it's not an instant process. Waiting a week or two is not unusual unless you have an emergency. I really appreciated, however, that when i needed them to come out ASAP to remove several old trees around our pool that had torn down a neighbors fence, they juggled their schedule to accommodate me. I have always found the staff and the owner very polite and helpful, and I've recommended them to friends who need trees trimmed. Most of all, I like the way the trees look after they have finished, as I've tried other local companies and I haven't been as satisfied with the result. I find Travers worth the wait. read more

I am horrified by the way I was treated by Travers tree service. Let me start by saying this is the first negative review I have ever posted anywhere..so I NEVER complain. However we are a tight community in the South Bay and our houses are on top of each other so we have to be good neighbors.They were working on my neighbor's trees today; cut them to the top of the fence. That's fine. There were 5 branches sticking though my fence (there are holes in the top of the fence). I asked them to please finish the job and just cut the couple of branches poking through my fence as it looked so weird from my window with the trees cut down to the fence with some poking though: LIKE A REALLY BAD HAIRCUT. They refused and said MY NEIGHBORS COULD PAY additionally to remove the 5 branches that they were only paid to cut the top of the trees!!! I tried to explain to the girl on the phone and again. "YOU can ask your NEIGHBORS to PAY for those branches." I will not ask my neighbors to pay for 5 branches.... I can understand if it was a giant fir tree..I have just paid $1,250. myself for such a tree to be trimmed. BUT everyone involved at Travers was so rude...consider yourselves warned... read more

About 2 months ago I hired Travers tree service to remove a very large tree in my backyard. I was debating between Travers and another company. Since Travers is well known in the neighborhood and they reduced their fee by $100 to match the nearly $2000 quote, I received from the other company, I decided to go with them. What a mistake!. The guy (I believe his name was Don) was very chatty. We talked about trimming down the large security bush in my front yard plus removing a small lemon tree also. All this was to be included in the price. Again, this was included in the other quote I received. I believe the job was large enough to where they didn't want to loose out due to a small added extra. Anyway, the guys showed up as promised. After removing the tree I asked them when they were going to trim down the front juniper/ ivy hedge. They said it should only take a few minutes, but had to wait for their boss for approval. They assured me that their boss was a few minutes away. As they all hung out in my driveway chatting I kept checking with them on their bosses ETA. I asked if they could call him and they said they could not. I must have waited for well over an hour before I had to leave. I asked that he call me and left the guys my cell number. I never got the call. In fact, I expected them to come back the next day to remove the stump and finish the job, but that didn't happen. I left several messages with the secretary. A few days later a guy showed up to remove the stump. That was it. Their job was done. I finally got in touch with the owner, Rick. He advised that the other guy was on vacation and I needed to talk with him and only him now. Words cannot describe how condescending he was. I explained that my original discussion was to trim it down to a hedge form, but he abruptly let me know that the contract said to cut back and not down and that I need to read things more clearly. (Basically, they took off a few scraggly ivy strands, which I could have done with some sheers) He also went on to ask questions like 'what do I do for a living?' and do i give things for free?.Again, this job was $2000 and completed in one day.I am not one to expect anything for free and they made good money for this. He then sent me a quote for around $600 to trim back the bush. Of coarse, I rejected it. This is the first time I have left a message on yelp, but more than 2 months later this very poor level of service still bothers me. Potential customers beware. I can't speak to their knowledge about trees or tree trimming, as I never got that far. I originally called and left a voice mail message, and never received a call back. About two weeks later, I decided to try them again, you know, stuff happens. When they answered the phone, I told them my name and that I had called two weeks ago and had not received a return call (very matter of factly) and went on to say that I was looking to get an appraisal on a tree that had been cut down, to determine how old it had been what kind of tree it was and an estimated value. His response was, how are we supposed to do that if the tree is already cut down? And I clarified that there was still a truck about 6 feet high as my neighbors had cut the tree down at the fence line, and that there were two identical trees next to this one. He said well let me see if someone has already been out there I said well no one has been out here. He said how do you know that they could have been out there when you weren't there. I said well the tree is in my backyard, and since I never got a call back they would have no way of knowing what my address was. Anyway, he just continued to argue with me and I finally told him nevermind, I would find an arborist that was more interested in my business. He told me that maybe I didn't realize how I was coming across! That I just told him my name and that i wanted an appraisal and he was supposed to do what with that? Um ASK ME SOME QUESTIONS! I've been in the investment real estate business 39 years. I needed bids to remove a HUGE Ash tree from one property, which towered over two houses, block walls, driveways, wrought iron fences, power lines, sidewalks and streets, and grew right next to a buried gas line. I would estimate the tree to have been 60-70 feet high, and almost 3 feet in diameter. I researched local tree companies, including Travers Tree Service, and got several bids. I wanted to use Travers' bid, but saw some negative reviews. I also saw Travers' responses to these bids, and decided to hire Travers as I believed their side of these stories. Well, Travers did the job PERFECTLY. (I am also a licensed General Contractor, so I know what I'm writing about here!) They got the tree down almost immediately, exactly per their agreed time, with absolutely no "collateral" damage, cleaned up the mess perfectly, got back with a stump grinding crew quickly, removed the stump, and cleaned up that mess completely. I highly recommend this company for tree service. I have photos of all aspects of this job, and can and would happily prove every single thing I've written here. read more
