    Trap Pond State Park

Trap Pond is a cypress forest in the water! I was so lucky to come across Trap Pond State Park on a tourism website. As the ranger said, this park is one of the best in DE, and one of the least known. It does not have a lot of visitors despite its proximity to DC and Baltimore, as well as DE and MD shore points. The park is located in Laurel, DE, almost on the bottommost DE/MD border. It was a long drive from Philly (almost 3 hours), but to be able to boat or paddle through a cypress forest in the water, is a really special experience. The park offers a number of activities. Hiking and camping are standard for state parks, and certainly found here. The camp sites are for RVs, tents, cabins, and they even have a few Yurts you can rent! Their mini island campsite is the most sought-after campsite in DE, and you will have to book far in advance to get it! The park is attached to a nature preserve, which is not accessible with paths or trails anywhere. Its purpose is to just preserve the land and nature. Inside that preserve is the oldest tree in the park, a cypress named The Patriarch, and it is estimated to be over 600 years old. Other activities include biking, volleyball, soccer, baseball, playground, picnicking, horseshoes, cornhole, various nature programs, free concerts on Saturday nights in summer, photo contests, and more. The most obvious activities are paddling in kayaks or canoes. Bring your own, or rent them at the boathouse. Also available are 4-person paddleboats, to rent. They offer pontoon boat tours with a ranger guide, on Fri, Sat or Sun. I recommend the Friday one at 6pm, with sunset. Our pontoon boat tour was $7 pp for adults, and $4pp for children under 12. I was able to wear my flip flops, and you can bring your own PFD, or use the ones provided at the boathouse. If you bring your own, it must be US Coast Guard approved. I used a lot of bug lotion but luckily I didn't see or feel a single bug on the trip. *They have a special fall foliage pontoon ride in October! The park was established in 1951, and astoundingly, is a man made pond! The area was wetlands which were dammed by lumber harvesters in the 18th C. Later, it was a sump for local farmers draining their fields. Today's pond is 3-5' deep on average, up to 10' in the deepest areas. Fishing is popular there, for large mouth bass, pickerels, sunfish, catfish, etc. Swimming was once allowed, but water quality became unsafe for humans and their dogs, and swimming was banned in 1999. DE state parks are $8 for out-of-state, but free in winter months.

Adorable little park with some quiet trails and a peaceful pond. Fishing and canoeing. Love it. Only thing I didn't like is there was nowhere to swim.

Cabin #7- nice privacy at the end of the row!

Stayed in cabin #7 which was cozy and nice. No bathrooms, and the dishwashing area/showers are closed nearby due to the time of year. Showers were still open just had to walk further into camp. The cabins are right near a trailhead which is nice for a stroll or a run. The heat kept us nice and warm during the day and at night. In the kitchen area there is a mini fridge with a freezer compartment, but if you're bringing food for more than 2 people for 2 days or more I would bring a cooler. No microwave and you have to cook outside. Nice little primitive cabin overall! Was told by someone in the park office that sometimes the swans come by the pond too which is nice. It was the perfect little weekend getaway we needed!

Had a marvelous Fall weekend at Trap Pond State Park. Beautiful biking path, well maintained with lots of nice scenery. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. Only negative: the continuous, very loud barking by a Rottweiler canine, A Loop, was very annoying. Who ties their canine up to a tree and ignores it and lets it bark bark bark? Losers! All other campers with dogs were very considerate and their dogs were so well-mannered. Will be planning another trip soon to enjoy all the scenery again. Highly recommend this very nice, well kept, Delaware State Park.

We spend quite a bit of time in the Dewey Beach area so while visiting this week we took a side trip here for the day. We initially stopped by on Sunday but 5 minutes after paying and entering it started to rain so we came back today and hiked on the boat launch side. The lake and surrounding woods is absolutely breathtaking this time of year and I love the smell of bonfires in the air. There are multiple docks along the trail which made our dock diving golden retriever very happy to say the least, at one point a huge gaggle of geese swam over just to watch him play. It was quite windy and cold so today's hike was a short one but this is definitely going to be a regular stop for us. Lots of birdwatching opportunities, I was able to get photos of a beautiful blue kingfisher. The porta potty by the boat launch was very clean as was the picnic area and the hiking trails are easy to find & follow.

A small version of Centennial Park. A lot of picnic area. A waterfall. Canoeing. Water scenery for miles. Costs to park, however.

I parked and spent about 20 minutes enjoying the beach and the sunshine. The beach is beautiful. No trash, firm sand and a smooth include down into the water. The waves were pretty calm today which was good because I did not spot any lifeguards on duty. A great spot to spend some time at the ocean. [Review 18162 overall - 84 in Delaware - 1684 of 2022.]

By the time we got here the facilities up front were closed so I have no idea what was available sans for restrooms and an outdoor shower. According to the website, shower and changing facilities are available, along with a food concession, chair & umbrella rentals, even a Mobi-Mat which allows wheelchairs to be pushed onto the beach (such a great idea). The sandy area is very wide and stretches for 3 miles with zero shady spots or trees. Lifeguards were gone for the day with their stands turned upside down. I noticed some vehicles actually parked on the beach near the northern end, a very cool perk that is not allowed back home. Ocean conditions were fairly calm but most folks were in waist-high water at most. OVERALL: Spacious real estate, but coming from Hawaii, my expectations are set too high, LOL.
