Girls & Boys - Gingerbread ice-cream at Girls&Boys, Fitzroy

We ate at Vegie Bar last weekend and afterwards decided to drop into their dessert shop, Girls &…read moreBoys, just next door. The owners of Vegie Bar opened Girls & Boys last month to satisfy the ever-growing demand for all things vegan on Brunswick St, and I'm sure glad they did. One of the great things about Girls & Boys is that they have a window there for take-away Vegie Bar food. Yes, that's right, you can now get Vegie Bar food to go -- no more waiting endlessly for a table, no more surly hipster waiters, no more practically sitting in your neighbor's lap as you crane to reach your plate -- just the good ol' Vegie Bar food you know and love in a fraction of the time and to be eaten in the comfort of your own home. (Or wherever.) Just pop in to Girls & Boys and go to the Vegie Bar takeaway window to your left. But let's talk about the Girls & Boys desserts, as this place is primarily a dessert shop. They have a variety of gorgeous, artfully created desserts -- puddings and little cakes and tarts and things like that -- that rival the likes of Brunetti (but without the cruelty of eggs and dairy!) A lot of them are also gluten-free or free from refined sugar. I will add there's not a HUGE amount of selection, but what they do have is beautiful. Personally, I was in the mood for gelato so I sampled the blood orange gelato (yum) but ended up going with chocolate hazelnut because it's hard to find vegan chocolate hazelnut gelato in this world! (probably a good thing for my waistline). While it wasn't the most amazing gelato on the planet, it was really really good, tasted exactly like a dairy chocolate hazelnut gelato would, and I would happily order it again. They also do soft-serve (including choc-tops!), smoothies (some healthier than others), and coffee (including your usual trendy stuff like turmeric and matcha lattes). They offer the whole variety of non-dairy milks for your coffees, including macadamia nut milk, which is unusual and pretty cool. The place doesn't really have any seating, so it's more of a grab-and-go kind of place. Service was friendly. Price is reasonable -- along the lines of other speciality dessert-type places. Even if you're not vegan, this is a great place to go if you have a dairy or gluten allergy, and a great place to get fancy little cakes and things for those special treat-yourself occasions as well. But even if you have ZERO dietary restrictions, this place is worth a visit -- don't miss it.

Super interior design and adjacent to another vegan restaurant- perfect for lunch and dessert! We…read moretried a chocolate shake, mint chocolate chip on a cone, and vanilla on a cone. The mint chip was the clear winner- swaying over even the omnivorous kids. The adults happily finished off everything else. There were 6 other options I believe, as well as sundaes, toppings, and pastries! Great option for vegans who are sick of maybe 1 or 2 sorbet options!

I didn't want to start off this review negatively, but when I was promised a thousand blessings I…read moredamn well expected them. All I felt 933 of them and i feel cheated, as for the frozen part, the product was only part frozen. Another disappointment. I also did not appreciate the sheer amount of choice of flavour available in store. 6 choices? It sent my anxiety into overdrive and I felt on the verge of a panic attack. Why not just one flavour: plain, coupled with a daily rotating flavour of the week. And also just out of curiosity, why don't you sell/do pizza? There's clearly a gap in the market there

What's a good word for something that is brilliant and yet totally dangerous at once? That's what…read moreFrozen is for me. I was thrilled when Frozen took over a section of what was once an unreasonably enormous pharmacy to bring the tart goodness of fro yo to South Yarra. It's a familiar formula: choose a small, medium or large cup. Fill it with your favorite flavors (natural, coconut and chocolate are my picks), then load on your toppings from the self serve bar and pay by weight. These aren't just any toppings though. They rotate... a lot... which is obviously a clever ploy to keep customers coming back for more. It works. I fall for it. Because they're interesting: halva (halawa), banana bread, green tea and red bean mochi, passionfruit pearls, super ripe and fresh mango, kiwi and more, PB cups, toasted nuts, muesli, shredded coconut... You can be as virtuous or indulgent as you like, moving from the right side of the bar (fruit, nuts etc) to the left (sex, er, chocolate). You can taste any flavor you want before paying. ... See you there?

When you parked in QV and it's that time of night during a weekday when every other food place is…read moreclosing up, fro-yo looks like a pretty good option as a replacement meal. Steps are easy. Grab a bowl, fill her up with whichever frozen yogurt you want, it's okay to mix them as you please. Then take your frozen-ness over to pile on some toppings. Whatever you choose, pick the "hey that looks interesting" and the "haven't had this in ages" and the "whoa this is here." Once everything is piled to your liking, either that or you can't possibly fit anymore into your bowl that you once thought was big, put it on a scale to get measured. And then based on the weight you pay up. Then go and eat your fro-yo topping creation. I love the idea; it never gets old for me, the whole add what you like and whatever you want DIY of fro-yo. And the girl behind the counter was nice (especially for being open later than most food places). So why not?

Nawww just two stars? Let's fix that shall we?…read more Right! I am a huge fan of the self-serve. I mean what other fro-yo outlets can you mix and match as many flavours as you wish and help yourself to as much or as little as you want?? The toppings are much more varietal and include naughtier options too (think oreo cookies, brownie bits, m&ms). What have we learnt from these reviews? Tutti-Frutti can be enjoyed as much as I do if you know that the frozen yoghurt is PRICED BY WEIGHT. I would give five stars but Tutti-Frutti in Perth has more options - EIGHT yoghurt flavours - so it's less one star in comparison. One more thing - the Taro flavour is awesome. Like coconut-white chocolate.
