Martin is, by far, the best Systema instructor outside of Systema HQ in Toronto. However, I walked away from the academy. Some of the students(including one who ran for governor during the recall election for ca. governor, and "informed" me that Gavin Newsom was a pedophile).bought into RW talking points and Covid misinformation, and I frankly felt uncomfortable, especially as a Black Man. I would've left it there and said nothing. However, after tweeting about my experience(without naming Martin or the academy), I was approached by one of their senior students/instructors while I was out working. How he found me, I don't know. but it wasn't happenstance. Although there was no direct threat made, it was certainly implied. It's especially galling because I was a long-time student here. But, I guess those on the "right" feel they can intimidate anyone now, for any reason. In any case, I'm training a different martial art now, no worries. But I'll never touch Systema again.

I thought it was a cute idea for a "Ladies Night Out". I contacted one of the owners (Chris) to find out how I could host a self defense class that would best fit my organization. Chris was very helpful and was able to tailor the class to my specific goals. I decided to host a Mother's & Daughter's Kick Butt self defense class for my organization RISE UP Youth Empowerment, as a bonding activity between mothers and daughters. Although I didn't come in with any particular expectations but the class was very informative, and more importantly it was fun fun fun!!!! All the ladies who attended the class expressed that they were able to learn great moves which also focused on toning their bodies. The Self Defense teachers were great!! they kept us interested with the knowledge they gave us. I felt empowered after attending this class and I would recommend it to all women because you'll learn so much that will possibly save your life, and as a added bonus tone your body. This course teaches essential skills for verbal de-escalation, boundary setting, and physical self-defense, but what really sets it apart is how those skills are ingrained through fully-adrenalized, full-force fight scenarios. That, and the fact that the IMPACT instructors are phenomenal. I'm always impressed by their attentiveness, innovative teaching techniques, and their emphasis on students' safety during physical confrontations. Since taking the Basics course, I've successfully used verbal de-escalation tools twice in real-life situations, including during a frightening incident when a muscular man ran straight at me and blocked my path while I was walking in my neighborhood. I've also applied the skills I've learned in the workplace and most other areas of life. It may sound hyperbolic, but the class really changed how I walk through the world. If you can't commit to the full Basics course, consider taking the Intro Class. It's a great place to start. IMPACT also offers an advanced course and a "Defense Against the Armed Assailant" course for those who have completed the Basics. I took both and highly recommend!

This will be my 3rd year at KMW, and the place keeps getting better and better. Since my last review, they've added more classes, including Brazilian jiu jitsu classes! BJJ is so much fun, and Ross and Bam Bam are the best. I've improved my flexibility, strength, and cardio/stamina since I started bjj, not to mention all the mental health benefits - lower stress, more confidence. Highly recommend bjj for everyone. All of my favorite krav maga instructors are still here - Ross, Kelly, Todd, Oscar, Gabe. Since my last review, Reggie and Micky also have classes on the schedule now, and they're fantastic. Between here and the Sherman Oaks location, I train 6 days a week, and I've never felt stronger. The facility is super clean; in fact, one of the training rooms is a no shoes room now (so barefoot or indoor shoes only). Plenty of hand sanitizer and wipes in each room. Free validated parking (2 hours before 5pm, no limit after 5pm and on weekends). First class is free, so come check it out! Davis is great about working with you regarding membership plans. There are monthly plans, but you get a better deal if you sign up for more months (3 month, 6 month, etc). I have an annual membership, which I just renewed, so KMW is stuck with me until 2026, haha.

I'm very glad I did-this class started with something I'd never thought about before, a question about what you'd be willing to do if faced with a situation where you needed to defend yourself physically from an attacker. The question is important because it was followed by learning all the techniques for doing so, and they essentially consist of doing things to another human being that I hope I will never be faced with having to do, to say the least (but look out if you try to attack me!). I have seen changes in my daughters and myself already, for example my oldest told me about her new habit of what she now does when she enters a dark parking garage at night. Thank you, Elliott, for imparting such a wealth of safety information to us.

The majority of the classes here are mostly for men so it was perfect timing for me. I persuaded my coworker to take the class with me. Our instructor, Julie, was a small asian woman that knows her self defense. I'm taller than her and when she held me, there were many times I was unable to break away! Dont be fooled by her size! Our class size was small but very effective during the one hour instruction. During our class, Dimitri (another instructor) assisted by practicing with us so that we had a better feeling of how it is to be attacked by a man (since most little asian women dont do that type of stuff....). After each class, Julie emailed all of us a review of what we learned and how to practice our moves and forms of defense. Great class! I learned a lot! Parking in the area is limited but some street parking is available. Easily accessible by CTA blue line.

It was the most stressful and isolating time of my life, and I was desperate to find community. I used to take karate lessons at ZUltimate Westwood (2005-2011), and reached out to see if any instructors from back then were still around and taking new students. Returning to the Westwood dojo was one of the best decisions of my life. Sensei Jason and Sensei Kim are not only talented martial artists, they are thoughtful educators. They challenge us physically with practical HIT-type workouts like sparring drills, bag work and strength training/conditioning, but also mentally by teaching us how to apply the kenpo forms and techniques we learn to real-life situations. More recently, they've helped me appreciate the more spiritual aspects of 'martial arts': the balance between years of training discipline and respect for tradition, and the unique interpretations that martial artists add to tradition through self-expression. Lessons are set up weekly, either 1-on-1 or with a partner(s). There are also several group classes offered every week for different age ranges (roughly ages 4-6, 7-11, teens and adults classes. There's a filtered water dispenser to keep hydrated, just remember to bring your own water bottle!
