While on the road driving to Ohio from NYC to visit an old High School buddy who just bought a house with his wife I happened across this cool Diner. Had a great omelette and delicious piece of home made Cherry Pie. Food was tasty but what makes this place great in my opinion are the staff. My waitress was a boisterous cutie who seemed to know every customer in the joint. Very local place. I like that, a lot. My husband and I were going to stop at the Sheetz up the road for a quick bite to eat, but then we saw the giant "Midway Diner" sign and decided to stop. The Trainer's Midway Diner in Bethel is attached to a hotel and looks like a common spot for Truckers to sleep and grab a quick bite to eat. Trainer's Midway Diner Atmosphere: Trainer's Midway Diner is located off the main highway. The giant "Midway Diner" sign stands out, which is how we found it. The inside is lackluster and has the small-town diner feel. There are plenty of booths, tables, and a full-length bar. The tables are decorated with personal art with the specials. Everything you can imagine with a small-town diner is there. We had no clue it's called "Trainer's Midway Diner" until googling it afterward. All of the signs say "Midway Diner." Trainer's Midway Diner Coffee: B The coffee at Trainer's Midway Diner was brewed hot and fresh. The cups were tiny and I could have used a dozen more refills. Other than that, it was fine. Trainer's Midway Diner Food: The menu has everything a stereotypical diner has but no more. There aren't many healthy foods, but it has all of the basic breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. Amazing food: tasted delicious, well presented. Rose, our server, was extremely friendly and attentive. My toast, dry, dark rye, was perfect. The coffee (Ellis brand) was amazing. My partner said her SOS (sh*t on a shingle) was delectable (she actually said delectable). This is a pretty humble roadside restaurant but our experience was great. Everything was made fresh, home made, not some individually frozen institutional food service crap. I can remember seeing the parking lot if this place packed with Big Rigs, family station wagons, and their big old neon sign letting me know I was Midway between Allentown and Harrisburg. Is Trainer's a little time worn? Yeah it is. If you're looking for a cookie cutter chain restaurant, or a diner that serves burgers on brioche well just keep driving, places like this are far and few between these days, enjoy a piece of authentic Americana while you still can. For what it is, the Midway Diner does an ok job. Reasonably priced food served at a reasonably quick speed with reasonably friendly servers. Like is the case with pretty much any diner, the menu is far too big, which makes me think the might have to prepare a lot of the food in advance. I don't think any diners have been particularly know for fresh cuisine, and the side of dark olive colored green beans I saw served here held up to this expectations. I got a tuna melt sandwich which certainly delivered on my expectations but didn't do anything to really wow me. I've never quite been able to figure out how diners staff up for their busy periods. With what seemed like two server and two cooks during the lunch time period, they were struggling to keep up with the volume. While this diner certainly wouldn't warrant a special trip to come here, it certainly is an acceptable place to stop off at for a quick bite to eat. read more

Well at least the service was good. Looked at the menu and saw "oyster stew". My mother makes an awesome oyster stew so I had to try it as you hardly see it anywhere. Well while it tasted pretty good there was only 2 little pieces of oyster in the entire bowl. I made the mistake of adding the soup crackers which had a yucky stale taste to them. So after swallowing a few spoonfuls and eating the 2 small pieces of oysters I just set it aside. I wasn't trying to get anything for free and wasn't gonna say anything, but when the waitress asked I just told her the truth about 2 oysters in the entire bowl. She ended up taking it off the bill so that was cool. I had the spaghetti and it was just OK. So while the service is good, my waitress who was the nerdy looking girl, needs to familiarize herself with the menu. When I asked for the oyster stew she didn't know what I was talking about. I had to point it out to her. The same thing with the spaghetti. Come on honey. When I was done I went into the bathroom. OMG are you kidding me with this s---? This is worse than most truckstop bathrooms I've been in. And I've been in numerous as I'm a truck driver so I know. The owners should really be ashamed of themselves. So I guess they think if the service is overboard friendly then no one will notice the other crap going on in this place. The place is fine, pretty much what you'd expect from a roadside diner. That said, I have some thoughts. 1. When you allow customers to "upgrade" from chips to fries, maybe explain that the fries will come smothered in gravy. 2. Allow the parent of a 3 year-old to order a beverage for the child. Don't ask (in front of the child) if said child would "like" chocolate milk. 3. If you're a female employee cleaning out a mens' room, maybe place a sign on the mens' bathroom door that you're in there. Or better yet, leave the door open. I have not been to a real diner in long time So when me and my family was looking for something to eat, we came here to eat. It was also walking distance from the hotel. My waitress was sweet and very kind. For her age, she was fast and very active. We enjoyed our meals and filled our stomachs and I left a nice tip. So I got a meat lovers yummy with home fries scalloped potatoes kind. And my boyfriend got chicken fingers for an appetizer and roast beef club with fries they came at once. The Midway Diner was a great place to stop for breakfast on our way to Yuengling Brewery and Roadside America. Great service, great food, great price. I opted for one of the breakfast specials (smoked pork chop and eggs). I find that I'm not completely satisfied with a breakfast if it comes on just one plate. Midway did not disappoint. My eggs (sunny side up), home fries and toast were presented on one plate and the pork chop on its own. Followed by, to my surprise, another egg on its own separate plate. Our waitress's explanation: "She felt bad in the kitchen because the yolk broke on one of your eggs." It did not matter to me since I normally just dunk my toast in the "dippy eggs." But the gesture brought my breakfast to a three plate meal and the extra egg at no charge was much appreciated. I was very excited by my breakfast before I even tried it. But of course the pork chop was beautifully smoked and a delicious compliment to my three eggs and home fries. As with many places along the turnpike, Midway has an odd collection of items for purchase near the register. Including our favorite, the Lotto Angel. I've deducted one star only because I was looking forward to a homemade donut only to be told they didn't have any. I ordered the "Center cut pork chops" with "whipped potatoes", "filling", a side of gravy, and "Kernel corn". They offered complimentary Bread with butter packets and I had Chocolate Peanut butter cake for dessert. The chops had absolutely no flavor at all. I didn't even taste grill char. They were thin and fairly tough and dry. Whipped potatoes were great texture, but again there was no seasoning. Filling, basically boxed stuffing blended with whipped potatoes, had a little bit of the boxed stuffing seasoning taste. It was so faint you could miss it as it was blended with flavorless mashed potatoes. It was very gooey and had an uncooked texture. Kernel Corn was canned corn with, shocker, no flavor at all. Not even a corn taste. I used way took much salt and pepper to get flavor, but still needed to add more. The bread was smashed generic dinner rolls that most restaurants offer. The house made cake...... I was looking forward to it, but it was a double layer chocolate cake with absolutely no hint of a peanut butter taste. The frosting was supposed to be peanut butter, but was a major fail, even for homemade. It even tasted the frosting alone after a drink of water, and nothing but sugar. The chocolate cake was very rich and pretty good though. Over all the servers were great and worthy of a star alone, but over all I found this to be a place more for folks who are without tastebuds or just looking for sustenance. Our food arrived just as ordered, piping hot, grilled biscuits which gives them a great density, and ample sausage gravy. Add mugs of hot coffee refilled as needed and a good server and it was a great tasting breakfast, reasonably priced, and just the right amount. We got 2 slices of a dense, delicious chocolate cake, one with chocolate icing and the other with peanut butter. Every Christmas when I go with my boyfriend to his grandmother's in Schellsburg, PA, we stop by the Midway Diner. It is right off of westbound route 78 and it is so much better than going to a fast food rest stop. I've only had grilled cheese and soup and it was good, but the main reason why we love to stop here, is the cakes! Big huge cakes! When we last stopped by we just went in and got like four pieces of cake. Go for the coconut, it is the best. Next time I'll get a burger and try some real food. I used to come here on road trips all the time 10 years ago or so, and this place would have rated 5 stars. Now? Service was fast and friendly, young guy at the register was great. No complaints there. Food was mediocre at best and very over priced. Kind of hard to ruin an omelette, but this place managed to do it. Burgers are advertised as 1/2 and 1/4 lbs, and aren't anything close to that. Fries didn't taste like much and were barely cooked through. We won't be back on our next trip to the area. read more

I don't see what all the negative reviews are about. I had the chopped steak with mushrooms and onions. It was hot, perfectly cooked, and priced right for what I got. It's a diner with typical diner fare and service, so if you're expecting more, move on. I was pleasantly surprised despite all the negative reviews. I'm glad I gave it a try!
