My choice for groceries over Safeway anyday. They offer a lot more selection of organic foods and specialty foods for much lower prices. This is super true of their dairy section. I go through a 32 oz European style organic yogurt (2.99) in three days. And they also get extremely festive during holidays so you'll find a pumpkin version of everything in October and come November, they have chocolate covered everything, it's amazing. read more

I love how this place is on the way back to my apartment. I come here almost every week because of how convenient it is, and it fulfills all your grocery needs at an affordable price! They have a lot of healthy items here since they're fresh and organic. All the workers here are super friendly and they're always willing to help you out when you need to find something. Best thing to get is their frozen orange chicken! Everything here is great and the food is bomb. There is so much variety and they have great pre-made meals already. Who doesn't love TJ's Parking: ample parking, well lit,shared lot, easy access, plenty of handicapped parking. Heck they even have a bike rack (not surprising for davis) Customer Service: this place must be a blast to work for becuase every single employee had a smile on their face and there voice was happy too. Anyone can put on a smile but your voice-tone is more telling. Store: well stocked with all kinds of goodies. Dont have it just ask. Well faced and signage is easy to follow. All the employees are super friendly! They also have really good packing skills. They can pack all your groceries in any bag you bring pretty much. It's a true talent! The prices are great for students too! And very healthy (both for the mind and soul) stuff! They have a bike rack outside for students. I was so relieved that TJ's came to Davis after I lived here for 1 year without it and had to travel to Sacramento for all of my TJs goodies. (I got spoiled after living a block away from a TJs for 3 years). The staff here is always helpful and friendly. They will hold items for you if they tend to run out by the end of the day so that you can be sure to get what you need in time. One issue we have had, however, is that their milk tends to spoil VERY quickly. Like days after opening (and days before the expiration date. TJ's is a nice specialty store that I visit now and then when I'm in this part of town. Product arrangement is good and the store is very clean. It's not a full service grocery and should not be compared with a supermarket. If you enjoy preparing your own meals from single food ingredients this may not be the place for you. The Trader Joe brand products are very high quality. Some of the nation's largest food processing corporations make custom products for the TJ label. The canned, bottled, boxed or jarred items are very good. The store has a strong focus on frozen meal packages that can be prepared with zero cooking or kitchen skills. All you need is a microwave and dinner is on. It's a hipster approach to the TV dinner. During a recent visit I made to the UK I noticed that this type of convenience meal was pretty popular in the stores. I went through the TJ doors today and picked two items. I got four good quality medium sized artichokes in a plastic box for a little more than $2.00 at TJ's. That's a decent deal. But I have to ask why TJ packs most of their produce in plastic bags or boxes? That's bad news for the Yolo County landfill. I also bought a 6 oz. bag of Trader Joe's Veggie Sticks Potato Snacks for $1.99. I know, these are oily, salty, nasty things but I like them anyway. GMO-free foods? I don't care. I have an extensive background in science, philosophy and religion. I don't have a particular need for GMO-free, Kosher or organic foods. To me, these food attributes are mainly for marketing purposes, not for identifying healthy foods. Bread prices looked very good at TJ's but the selection was limited. The dairy section was high priced with little selection of milk but plenty of soy substitutes and no cheese. Organic eggs are expensive. Fish and meats: way too expensive. I created a Yelp account so I could document my numerous bad experiences at this Trader Joe's. Their produce is simply sub-par. Most of the fruit looks damaged, their onions look discolored and ugly, and I've purchased as many inedible potatoes as edible ones because they tend to be full of rot once you cut them open. I live across the street from the store but I drive to Safeway if I need produce because, at this point, I know if I buy it from Trader Joe's, I'll be disappointed. That should be enough to choose another Grocery Store option, but strangely, it isn't what bothers me most. The checkout lines are amazingly slow. Sometimes the employees will engage in friendly banter to distract from their slow pace, but sometimes you just have to sit there and watch them painstakingly unload your cart. It is impossible to get in and out of this store in less than 15 minutes (even if you're just buying a premade meal), so it is quicker and less agitating to just drive to SaveMart, even though I live right across the street from TJ's. And SaveMart has a wonderful produce section and hardly lines at checkout. There are many more reliable grocery store options in Davis. read more

I have lived in Davis for two years now, and have shopped at Trader Joe's regularly. Over a dozen times now, I have purchased something that either had already expired or expired a few days later. My tipping point is the fact that I just purchased cheese on 4/13, and the expiration date on it is 4/8. I am done shopping there. I shouldn't have to micromanage every single expiration date to account for their inadequacy. Be warned. Check the expiration dates. And don't buy the milk, because, in my experience, it goes bad before the date on it. read more

Trader Joes never disappoints. It doesn't seem to matter which city and store we shop at - the service is always friendly, the samples fun and tasty, the prices fantastic and their delightful weird and wonderful variety a treat to try, buy and experience. We wish to heavens we had a Trader Joes here in Woodland. We generally shop in Davis, CA but sometimes in Petaluma, CA, Sacramento - wherever we happen to be and see one. As the family errand doer my favorites are the small salads and right size sandwiches I can grab and eat between stops when there is no time for a meal. We like TJs crunchy cereals for mornings, wines for weekends and their unique little frozen dinners. Their nibbles are often pretty darn good too. Whole Foods may be considered posher but I dont need or care for posh. Trader Jones is friendlier, just as unique and as international in scope, much more fun and offers great prices. Every shopping trip to Trader Joe's is a little excursion with a tasty ending for us. Bless 'em. read more

My number one grocery shopping place in Davis. When UC Davis students are in session the lines are horrendous though - like 10-15 minutes minimum at 5:30pm. You can eat healthy for cheap by buying ingredients at Trader Joe's. when we found out davis had a trader joes it made moving here from west la much easier. the prices are good and the employees are always helpful and kind. my kids love looking for the duck so they can get a lollipop or sticker (depending on the time of day and how well they've behaved). a number of staff have learned our names and go out of their way to say hi to us. recently debbie even printed out some coloring pages for my daughter. it's just big enough to have most of what you need without feeling like a sterile supermarket. great selection of wine and beer. we shop here every week and love it! read more

Everything is organized and I'm always happy with the quality. If you buy something and it isn't the best quality possible (spoiled, open, moldy, etc.), they will take it back and let you get a new one! See something you want to try but not sure you want to commit to buying? Ask any worker and they'll open and let you sample. I was ecstatic about Trader Joe's arrival in Davis! It's one of my favorite places to shop at for groceries. The environment is so friendly and the food/people there just seem to give the place a very laid back feel. They have the best frozen foods, cute mini carts, and they always have SAMPLES!! :D I always get staples here such as tortillas and dried fruit. There's a variety of pre-made salads, breads, and lots of organic foods. This place never gets boring because there's always something that I want try. ***You have to try the Mac n Cheese bites!!!! For busy (or just lazy) students, Trader Joe's is the best place to stock up on frozen meals, which are far superior to the ones found in your local Safeway or Nugget. At Trader Joe's, you can buy garlic naan, orange chicken, or pork tenderloin that are only a few minutes in the microwave away from transforming into a delicious meal. I recently discovered their simmer sauces, which are outrageously simple ways to prepare tasty tikka masala or curry at home. For those more inclined towards cooking, you can also find such treasures in the frozen aisle as lamb shank and ahi tuna. If you were to buy these items at Safeway or Nugget, you would have to pay alot more for it. Trader Joe's manages to offer its rock-bottom prices by sacrificing quality of meats, but in terms of being able to prepare gourmet meals on a budget, Trader Joe's is unmatched. The downside to Trader Joe's is that they don't carry as wide a selection of produce as their competitors. Also, I don't like that they force you to purchase some produce in bulk. Sometimes a recipe calls for just one carrot sticks, not a bag of it. In these situations, I just head over to my local Safeway. read more
