Aquariums allow us to bring a little bit of that world into our homes. Having grown up with several aquariums, both fresh and saltwater, I've always appreciated what an aquarium can do for a room (doesn't hurt that I studied marine science in college either). There aren't too many dedicated saltwater aquarium shops in the area so I was excited to check out the Salty Dog. As soon as I walked in, I noticed the reef tank that is beautifully stocked and lit. For anyone who appreciates fish and corals, this place proves itself to be the real deal right from the start. Further into the store, you'll see several tanks with fish and some tanks containing corals and coral fragments. Everything I saw looked to be great quality and very healthy. This isn't your local PetCo where you see some dead fish floating in the tanks. Despite the great location and exceptionally high quality product, the best thing I found with The Salty Dog is the knowledge of the two owners, Adam and Kyle. These guys were both there and I had the opportunity to chat with them for about an hour. It's clear that they both love what they do and want everyone to have a great experience with their aquariums. Adam provided me with a print out that went step-by-step through the process of setting up a saltwater tank. Part of that process requires you to bring a water sample to The Salty Dog to be tested by them before they'll even allow you to buy any livestock. On top of that, they told me they guarantee their fish for about 24 hours! I really enjoyed my trip to The Salty Dog and I look forward to setting up my next tank. Adam and Kyle are great to work with and I'd recommend taking a few minutes to chat with them if you ever stop by. Their knowledge and love for their craft is instantly recognizable. On one recent occasion, I went to the store and saw them on their shelf. I was not happy. I complained, and asked why they hadn't called me. The young woman I spoke with had a terrible attitude, saying something about them being short-staffed. To add insult to injury, when she carried the bags, she dumped them violently to the floor. The bags were made of paper and I told her she's going to tear the bags. Sadly, I was subjected to more terrible attitude by this store staff. I wonder if I am the only one who is treated in this way. I want to love this local store but it doesn't seem like they care about customers much. I also wish they carry more items with less plastics and packaging. After this horrible experience, the only way I would go back to this store is if they start carrying bulk cat food and litter (of the kind I want), so I don't have to bother with plastic packaging that are unlikely to be recycled (something like only 10-20% of plastics going into recycling bins get actually "recycled" - actually only downcycled to be more accurate, and all plastics produced on the earth will eventually released into our environment. Plastics are hazardous waste and should be treated that way. I shudder every time I go to stores - any stores. our plastic culture is truly unsustainable - it is destructive. I heard plastic pollution of our land, water and air is the problem second only to climate change). Until then, I will start taking care of my cat food need at GreenStar and some online stores. SAD.

When it finally cleared out, two workers practically shoved their way through the aisle to straighten up. They probably have to do this duty at some point before close but they took a long time and were in my way, spent the whole time talking loud about random things. Touching the cans seems like a one person job Especially in already overcrowded aisles. The customer service was nonexistent. He eats a special kind of kibble that I buy at a specialty store here in Boise. Ok, it's not like special special, but it's a better kind for him vs the ones you'd get at like a Walmart. I did however!!! find some other things for him. First I'll start with the store and its layout. It's definitely one of those homey type farm type stores. It has all kinds of things for animals, outdoor things for humans, plants, trees, all the stuff. I guess it's like a Home Depot but thankfully not a big box store that's corporately owned/operated. I know of 2 locations in that area of NY. Not sure if that's the only two, but if so, that gives you an idea that it's not an annoying mainstream store. You'd think...smaller, privately owned and operated store...prices must be higher. Not even. I was genuinely shocked at how much I didn't spend there haha. My little Alfred (he's a yorkie) loves loves loves bully sticks! Sure, some times he acts stuck up and I'll give him one, he will chew it for a min and come right up to me expecting another lol I used to give him bully sticks when he was a tiny baby bc they're good for their teeth and he was a ... well, he was a difficult little puppy lol. I don't agree with keeping him in the store (he does get to come out of his cage for a spell when the store closes) but Gene, the owner, believes that the bird, who he rescued 17 years ago, is happier there. Overall the store has a sizable collection of retail items and sells fish, small birds, rodents, and reptiles. They also feature adoptable kittens from SPCA, who are always surrounded by boys and girls and woman, cooing over the cute babies. If I still lived in Ithaca, Pampered Pets wouldn't be my first choice for supplies, but I wouldn't avoid it altogether, either.
