The large 10' chicken on the roof of the vintage 50's building in the middle of nowhere near the airport lets you know you've arrived at Tower Chicken. I needed turkey thighs for a recipe and this was the only place I could find them. Wow, I mean...wow, this place is a throwback. And I mean that in a complimentary way. The butcher cases are vintage and the store clearly hasn't changed in a very long time. There's every permeation of chicken you can think of - various parts, blood for czarnina, fryers, soup chickens and roasters. Speaking of roasters, I'm used to getting 3lb birds at the grocery store. Here they were 7-8 lbs! They did have my hard to find turkey thighs as well as a decent selection of ducks, capons and rabbit. There's a small selection of rubs, sauces, marinades etc plus a freezer case of homemade soup and pierogis. Prices are in line with the local grocery store, but you're definitely getting a fresher, better quality product. Why not 5 stars, JT? Well....there's a lot of chickens being slapped on scales without cleaning in between, and the guy handling my bird (bare hands) also handled my money, so now I have about $8 in salmonella dollars in my wallet. read more

Plop...on the scale...without any paper underneath it. I have seen people complain about this place but they are only weighing chicken so don't get upset because there is no cross contamination. You should be more concerned about eating at a fast food restaurant or buying Chef Boyardee. Obviously based on the name they have chicken and darn good tasting ones! Beyond chicken they have some other more obscure items like pheasant, rabbit, ducks, geese, etc. If you like Czarnina you can also buy it here and also get your piergogis on which appeals to my Polish blood. Tower chicken is like the old school grocery store that your grandparents shopped. They sell quality poultry and don't skimp on quality. Again, another business I've heard good things about, but never found myself in the area when they were open to visit. Thanks to a little vacation time, I finally made it in to Tower Chicken. Imagine going to your local grocery store, stepping to the butcher counter and then being transported, along with the butcher counter, into a independent building. Behind you is a wall covered in shelves that are filled with specialty condiments and other items made by Tower Chicken and a few other local providers. The meat case is filled with chicken, duck, chicken, turkey, chicken, sausages, and chicken. The chicken is sold in the form of breasts, thighs, ground chicken, chicken sausages, whole chicken, and crossing the road. All of the meat is "all natural" fresh from their farm and the prices can't be beat for the quality of these products. Tower chicken also sells farm fresh eggs, $2 per dozen. I'm told the eggs arrive each Monday. I'll definitely go back, since they're open on Saturdays too. read more

I saw one of the workers scratch her head and then touch the raw chicken she was bagging chicken from the display with her bare hands. I have been going here for as long as I can remember. I used to go with Grandma so she could get her soup chicken and noodles. They also carry frozen pierogi. It's not as good as homemade but will certainly do in a pinch. Their birds are farm fresh and you can tell the difference. The better tasting chicken makes the trip here worth it. I have come here for my Thanksgiving turkey the last few years and thought it was way better than grocery store turkey. They also have a nice selection of wing and BBQ sauce which is unexpected in such a small place. The service has always been patient and helpful. They will happily chop up your soup chicken for you. I love going here for some reason. If I'm not making a special run, any time I'm in that area I have to stop and get something. The must haves for me are their chicken brat patties...the seasoning is so good and it tastes like a real brat, just a lot better for you. I've had the jalapeno burgers and my hubby is partial to the mushroom chicken burgers. Cook them frozen on the grill...no preservatives so they'll fall apart otherwise. They have chickens, chicken parts, different types of chicken sausage, spices and rubs. Ask a counter guy about a special rub they make up and have in a small tub rather than in the shaker container. I always wanted go to tower chicken for years and today I just happened to drive past it so I slammed on the breaks and pulled in. This place is heaven for any cook with so many unique poultry and other meats. This is an old school butcher shop with men in white coats that will spend the time helping the virgin shopper navigate the meat cases. How could I have put off a visit to tower chicken. Go to the web site and down load the menu and see all the many good options for a cook to create magic. The place is clean with three meat cases full of all kinds of goodies. The wall is covered with endless dry and wet options to create endless ideas for all the meat options. I got the bacon wrapped gourmet chicken breast, see my pictures. I also got the stuffed whole chicken breast wrapped in string. It has a brown berry and sausage dressing as the filling. I have not cooked them yet but I can't wait. Both items were under $15.00 which I felt was not bad for the quality items I purchased. This is a must stop for any cook. I'm not going to mention all the meats so see the web site but I will say I have never seen fresh duck in any meat counter, this intrigues me because I love duck and have never cooked a fresh one and I can only imagine being in heaven. (Scordatos Bakery and Empire Fish) The customer is given courteous welcome making one think they have been patronizing for years even if you walked through the door for the very first time. The product is far superior to other chicken anywhere in the County. Stuffed chicken breast, polish sausage, fresh and smoked they are the finest kind. Mothers Best Pierogi...Smaczny! My wife won't roast a chicken from anywhere else. Since I'm a big fan of my wife's roasted chicken, I'm happy to come here. I appreciate the bare-bonesness of Tower. This is a true "old school" poultry shop. I'm sure 6th street was clogged with old Polish ladies making the trek back in the 50's and 60's. Although they do carry a few random bits of other dead animals, chicken is their bread and butter. They carry chickens in all sizes for baking, frying, grilling, or to use in soups. You can buy wings or drummies by the ton if you wish. I've bought chicken breasts here that must have come from the Dolly Parton of poultry. I can't say if their birds are "organic" or not, but I have heard they are locally raised, so that's a big plus in my eyes. Come Turkey season, I can't think of anywhere else I would ever get a bird besides Tower. The only concern I have is the casualness by which the butchers handle the birds. I'm sure they know what they are doing, but lack of gloves and slapping raw birds directly on the scales wouldn't even fly at Pick 'n Save anymore. Dear Tower Chicken, Was there last Saturday after visiting the nearby farmers market on 6th and Howard. Well, the "bad-ass" giant 7.5 lb. chicken did NOT turn on me. It cooperated very well after i CHOPPED IT UP INTO PIECES!!!!! BWA-HA-HA-HA-HA!!!!! Pan roasted the resulting split breast with your potato sausage, white wine, oyster mushrooms and herbs de province that I bought from the farmers market. Oven roasted the rest of the bird Monday night with just simple olive oil, salt, pepper and a bit of garlic. That got devoured too. Just sauteed up the tub of livers last night. Butter, orange/ginger sauce and red pepper flakes. yum. Seriously, the quality of the bird and other various items I bought from Tower Chicken was superior. In winter, i buy their chicken for soup and also get a package of the thin noodles they sell because its just like the ones my grandma used to make (by hand). The whole experience is inspiring...makes you want to run right home and cook up yummy things. We have visited on Saturday mornings and its a GREAT way to kick off the weekend. I have been getting chicken here since 1982 when my now ex-husband brought me here for stewing chicken so I could make his Grandma's outstanding chicken and dumplings. I don't buy chicken anywhere else and I live in Lake Geneva now, have for 16 years, east side before that. I bring a cooler and let my imagination soar, I am never disappointed. For someone who was told to cut our red meat and pig this was a great find, you can get all kinds of sausages made with chicken, I like the Italians and the Chorizos the best. I called the next day and told the owner and his response was "so what" and "no one else called us" --- I did tell him I was calling as a courtesy and he hung up on me.
