I cannot say enough about the employees at Nehring's Sendiks on Downer. The customer service is unlike any other grocery store I have been to. Jean and Patti, who work in the deli and bakery, are kind, friendly, patient, and hard-working I shop here weekly with my mom, who is blind. She can't cook at home, so we like to buy food from the hot deli. They have a variety of options and they all taste wonderful and homemade. They also have delicious options for holidays. I've ordered meals for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and birthdays, and I've always been impressed. My only complaint about this store is the parking lot sucks. I usually park at the far end of the Sendik's customer parking lot if there's a spot available or I park in the parking lot across the street that's on the other side of the store. read more

More cramped and tight than other Sendiks, but like all Sendiks very high quality very overpriced groceries in too much plastic. They only have very good bread, when I was last here the least expensive loaf was $11, for a Breadsmith loaf which was cheaper and fresher at Breadsmith nearby. Any cashier who laughs at my jokes can take my money. The quote was about my friend who wore some chunky brown sandals. "Jesus on my feet, Jesus on my mind." He snorted mid-scan. You don't get that everyday. My visitation to this market stemmed from an illegal street crossing to acquire brekky. Three meat burritos were the special of the day, but Sendik calls it meatlovers. Potatoes potatoes, tomatoes tomatoes. A wee bit small for my appetite, but a tasty cheesy meaty bundle of breakfast all things considered. These workers received and leaned into banter, fostering a friendly and homey feel. I can't recognize these things, but via a compatriot of patronage the woman behind the counter had "good edges." Cheers to specific compliments, tell people nice things! The market portion of this spot seemed well-priced, yet the grocer section was a little step up from the usual ALDI run. However, you can't buy genitalia shaped pasta (see picture) at your usual retailer! I'd come back here again, but would need to give a lunch sando and dinner recipe a spin before I can defend this place with my life. Milwaukee, you slowly win my heart with moments like these. Sendiks - a small grocery store in a beautiful building notable only imo for their hot food area and staff. Many misses - the pricey deli cold cuts, cheeses along with the bakery area seem average (obliged to provide focus ) at best. Meat counter with great staff is stellar but prices are generally considerably higher than Whole Foods. Actually, the entire store's food costs much more than Whole Foods which is crazy. While they have beer and wine there - the lack of focus on it being relevant suggests, as with earlier comments, pedestrian efforts. . Sort of silly to not do all the little things - easy things - in a store this size considerably so much better. The floral and dated home decorations/home goods area is nonsensical - a loud/cluttered waste of space laggard and forever empty with odd things that suggest maybe this a side hustle for someone whose glory days were the 70's. I also don't see any considerable volume buying from patrons which again portends to a more convenience store vibe. Why don't you reset the focus so that the neighborhood makes it their only grocery store? Too bad they can't get out of their own way read more

This Sendik's has the best hot food and sandwiches. I love the figgy goat with the fig jam and goat cheese on toasted bread. You can also ask them not to toast it. Some other things they have are calzones and Cornish hens. Their baker also has a great selection. I love their cronuts. read more

This is a great, small market for our neighborhood. It's a bit pricey. You really have to look for sales and even those are a bit out of my price range. They have lots of unique and speciality food, a great wine selection, and a decent beer selection. Their floral selection is decent enough for a store this size. Usually, the staff are friendly and helpful but I haven't interacted with them much beyond check out. I'll stop here every once and a while if I really need something. I am not one for ever making reviews, but boy oh boy... Matt from the Meat department. The praise I have for him; after long, dreary, and stressful days of work, nothing cheers me up more than stopping by the Sendiks meat department of Meadowbrook. He is the heart and soul of the entire store, and that is an UNDERSTATEMENT. Whatever that sweet, kind, funny, and genuine individual makes, double it instantly. Sendiks prices are a little higher than most stores, but in my opinion, getting the chance to see Matt makes the cost 100% worth it. In fact, his attitude and energy he brings to the meat counter makes the food taste even better. His smile could light up the entire store by itself, and I am not kidding. His laugh too... goodness gracious! I have never heard such a cheerful tone of endearment. I have friends and colleagues who also shop at Sendiks, and they also talk about the positivity he brings to their days. In conclusion, Matt from the meat department is without a doubt the greatest employee I have ever seen at any store within my lifetime. Sendiks...you guys hit the jackpot with Matt. This is not a red bag Sendik's, as I was told by an employee after I was looking for a wine that was advertised by a red bag Sendik's. No worries, they still have a great craft beer and wine selection, albeit the store is small. I'm glad this store is here, as I work in the area. I pop in here often for lunch items, or after work, to grab stuff for summer festivals in the park. You can build a nice array of stuff for not much money, and grab a LaCroix or a cold craft beer while you're at it. Service is helpful. It's a good grocery store to have close by if you live in the area. The prices are moderate the bakery in the corner back of the store has delicious cheese pastelitos/pastry and chocolate chip cookies. I was told told they have carrot cake by the slice and also carrot cake cupcakes yummy my favorite. I didn't get any Their selection on sausages are really good, I also got bacon which was very good and fresh. For the area it's good to have a place close by to get groceries read more

This particular Sendik's has the feel of a quaint, little neighborhood market. Dropped by when I was in the area to pick up a few things for dinner. The store is small, but packed full of goodness. I was able to find everything I needed (plus some, of course). I like that their meat selection is exclusively butcher case style, which always makes getting the quantity you need a bit easier. Everything looked wonderfully fresh. The store may be small, but they still pack in a decent sized produce selection. I picked up some salad fixings and everything was super fresh. Due to the size of the store and aisles I wouldn't necessarily want to do a week's worth of shopping here, but would definitely recommend it for picking up a few odds and ends (or, in my case--dinner)! I love this store! It is always stocked with fresh produce. They do an excellent job of serving the community of both elderly, families and college kids. Their staff are always helpful, kind and they appear to like working together. The butcher, deli and bakery are wonderful. The brats they make fresh are the best anywhere. They have a wonderful slection of wines and unique items too. I feel like I am in a nice European style grocery store. It's so refreshing to shop there. Today was a beautiful day. I worked outside clearing downed tree limbs from the recent storm. My hunger was calling around noon so I decided to treat myself to a Nehring's Sendiks on Downer hot sandwich from the deli. Sendiks staff were very helpful and knowledgeable about the different food that was fresh and ready at the deli. I ordered a roast beef sandwich hot pressed and It was amazing. They used fresh ciabatta bread, thinly sliced roast beef, fresh spinach, tomatoes , pepper jack cheese, and chipotle mayo. The sandwich was wrapped well in a foil lined paper bag that maintains the structure of the sandwich. I ate at my job site, sat on the grass and had an Arnold palmer iced tea/lemonade tall boy . Unwrapped the sandwich and it was still piping hot. Sliced it in half and began lunch. First bite drew me in with the pepper jack and roast beef hanging out of the crisp warm ciabatta bread. Delicious. I'll be back to try other hot food when I'm in the neighborhood. Wonderful takeout experience. Thanks Sendiks! read more

The store was stocked well nice and clean. We were looking for dried shrimp to put in the gumbo. However they didn't have it but they knew what we were talking about. This place has been the high end go to for groceries for as long as I can remember. The pork chops here are fantastic, and the selection of other stuff is a great, or better than it's always been. A charming, European feeling market in a part of town that's always been buzzing. When I was a kid, I thought this place was expensive, but there are deals to be had - the pork chops! For a neighborhood grocer, nice joint. Really good selection of prepared foods. Probably not a place to do your everyday grocery shopping because the center of the store selection is lower than a mainstream grocer and you will pay a higher price. They do have a nice liquor section and their produce section, although limited in selection, often has great deals and some unique items. read more

What a bizarre place. A carpeted grocery store? What's with that? It's weird. That aside, two thumbs up to their specialty areas that other reviewers have touched on: meats/deli/seafood/flower shop. Top notch goods. The rest of the place I could take or leave. You're not getting any deals here, but most people who shop here aren't necessarily looking for deals. I have been prompted to think about Sendik's for a number of reasons recently. The main reason, and the saddest, is that I lost my Sendik's on Downer screen printed cotton shopping bag at the Bath and West Show a few weeks ago. I am inconsolable! I have had that bag for over a decade and I have cherished it! The reason the bag was so important for me, aside from the very beautiful design, is that Sendik's became a very special place for me when I was in Milwaukee in the freezing midwinter. Full of colour and charm and nature's bounty it was my Mecca when I needed cheering up, and it was my shrine when I needed something healthy to pick me up. Sendik's is special. I hope that everybody shops there for centuries to come. And what of the art house cinema / theatre and the independent hardware stores close by? Are they still thriving too? Really hope so! Sendik's is my go-to neighborhood market. It's small but full of all the things you want to buy. No giant boxes of cereal or monster rolls of toilet paper - go elsewhere for those. You will find excellent produce with selections you won't find in other stores, a great meat department, bakery and deli with fantastic homemade salads, wraps and paninis ready to roll. I've shopped here for decades and I always say if something isn't good, Sendik's won't have it. Something to consider when buying the berries on sale - eat them right away. There is a pharmacy, a coffee shop and a hardware store all on the same block, so they won't have many of those things either. (Just walk!) Also free off street parking. Some folks consider them pricey, but I don't. Sendik's is a great value worth the few extra pennies you'd save across town. The employees are informed and friendly and that alone is priceless. read more

All Sendik's restaurants have that class appeal, you kinda have to wear business casual when walking in. Just kidding. But seriously though this is a pretty nice place in a great location. The parking is not too terrible as they have their own parking lot and you can also park in the neighborhood somewhere. As far as deals go this is no walmart or woodmans - you'll probably kick yourself for buying a few things and end up paying $50 for what elsewhere may have been $20. For me this is a deal breaker because as a college student I cant afford high price stuff. I suppose it makes sense though since the people in the Downer area who shop here don't necessarily need deals and are fine with the great quality food they receive. Maybe when I have more cash I could just pick whatever I want but right now if youre a penny pinching college student like I am, you may want to avoid this place. Its great if you forgot a few things or need some fresh meat or cold cuts or a bottle of wine, but buying here in bulk will leave your bank account looking sad. Aside from that this is a reasonable grocery store. The staff have always been friendly and you do get a feel-good vibe of a family owned grocery store that the locals enjoy. I cannot specify the quality of the bakery or the deli but the beer selection is pretty nice and so is the fresh meat selection :) read more

I love Sendiks, especially this location! It's cute and I can never leave without something. I love stopping in at their bakery section- they always have so many great treats. Today I came in to grab a frosted sugar cookie after eating lunch- I am normally not one to complain, however the sugar cookies on the top shelf were the one spot where a fly was buzzing around and landing on top of them. I got something else in a different bakery cabinet because I thought it was pretty unsanitary and gross. I'm not sure how employees didn't notice but I'm sure other customers would not purchase seeing this as well. read more

I love that this is family owned. Also, the staff are extremely knowledgeable and accomodating. Whenever I go here it is always very clean and organized. Where you expect the dressing to be... Wow... It is! I hate going into a grocery store and everything is everywhere, unorganized, or always out of stock. I never have to worry about this here! What a wonderful way to shop at a local small-scale grocery store. This mart is chocked full of healthful opens for your pantry along with hard-to-find gourmet items. Their seafood is fresh. Their bread is brought in daily. The feel of the place is reminiscent of the corner, mom and pop outfits. I'm so happy they're opening up more locations and taking over old shops to rebirth into new stores. Why only four stars? They're can be on the pricey side. I want to love you I really do . I have had multiple bad experiences with their produce. It's a little bit more expensive then your average grocery store , so I expect a little more . I live rite down the road so it's hard to stay away . I suggest buying from their pasta bar earlier in the week when they put it out fresh. They have some pretty good pre made dips and a fairly big meat department . Same with the dips check the expiration dates as they are not made daily . They do have a side parking lot with a couple spots so you don't have to use a Meter out front ! read more

What I like: - old school grocery store with legit butcher department (they had a whole brisket in the case so two thumbs up for that!) - It's small and easy in and out - The smell of this place (I know I'm weird...but I like it!) - kick booty flower department -warm food/soups---feel comfort food here folks! What I dislike: - All the waste with wrapping of the veggies (and whatever else they can wrap) on those black containers. I hate it and curse them every time I'm in there. People do not need a stalk a broccoli wrapped and put on a container! Ughh! I know they are not the only ones that do this but it seems really excessive here. - not so fresh produce sometimes. (sometimes it is moldy. eek) - the meat is just okay - we have tried many things from the meat dept and just come away very underwhelmed Overall, good location and good grocery store. This is by far the worst Sendicks I've ever been to. I'm shocked to even associate them with Sendicks as their grocery stores are usually top notch. I was most disappointed with the fresh/ready made food selection. There was not a single vegetarian or kosher option in wrap or sandwich form. There was only one measly salad and some random mixed veggies that looked like they had been sitting out way too long. Even in the frozen section it was hard to find a microwave meal that was kosher or vegetarian. The one disturbing part of our shopping trip was that there was a hummus container in the fridge that had clearly been eaten from! It was just sitting there among the other hummus containers to buy and had scoops of it missing. So gross!! When ringing up half of the items weren't even recognized in their computer systems and the cashier had to keep making the bagger go find items prices. I will not be going back to this grocery store. read more
