I e come to this store in particular a couple of times before, and I e always found that they have the best prices for just about any type of beer and wine. In fact, the prices are much lower than any convenience store price. This is especially true for the beer case prices. We picked-up a case of Coors and a case of Heineken for at least 20% less than what we would normally pay at a grocery store. The selection here is also much more robust than anywhere else. If you've been to Total Wine you're probably familiar with the experience. They have the largest selection of wine in the area, as well as a generous selection of every other kind of beer and spirit you may be after. However, it can be a little difficult to navigate. I wish they had a map or guide very obviously available at the front of the store so you could see the layout and head to where you want to go. If you're not browsing I recommend buying online and just picking up. I was fortunate to find employee Colin while wandering and searching for mead, and Colin took me right to where it was. I could have wandered for an hour and not found it. However, I think Colin was the only employee I saw roaming the floor so it may be challenging to find assistance if you need it. Overall though, this is probably the most budget-friendly place to get booze in the area, with the best variety, and I appreciate that quite a bit. read more

First off I'm going to say I like this location and company. Hovered between 3 and 4 stars, but still I consider it to be good. My disappointment is and I'll concede, could be due to economic factors. Inflation and supply chain issues are real. Yet they've sometimes been out of my admittedly strange imports, and I've seen they aren't as competitive as they used to be. Okay I take that back as for kegs solid, but beers and wine don't seem all that spectacularly priced. That was one major reason I used to shop here more. We have more choices now. If you are new into beers and wines, this is where you do want to go. All of the employees are super helpful, passionate, and knowledgeable. That type of expertise you will not find at a grocery store. Also thank you for the incredible selection of Virginia wines. Am biased being from here, but this area has the best of the nation. 1 star for the poor customer service by this location's manager, Lucio. Last week, I went to this Total Wine and requested a price match on the 2019 Duckhorn Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. As proof of the price at the competing retailer (Safeway), I brought a photo of the shelf tag (attached to this review) and two receipts (which demonstrated that I purchased the wine at the advertised price from two different Safeway locations). The manager refused to honor Total Wine's price match guarantee (listed on the Total Wine website) on the grounds that I didn't have the actual shelf tag with me. When I asked Lucio if he expected me to steal it from Safeway, he replied that I should bring a printed ad showing the price. I told him that Safeway doesn't print an ad listing the price of every single bottle of wine. He ignored this point and repeatedly insisted that he couldn't match the price. I explained that the photo of the shelf tag and receipts were sufficient proof for the manager of the Ballston Total Wine to match the price, so why was he being inconsistent? I told Lucio that he was putting me in a catch-22 by demanding proof that doesn't exist (a printed ad) or is unattainable (stealing the shelf tag). He didn't respond to this point and insisted that his decision was final. I believe that Lucio was acting in bad faith and didn't want to match the price because Safeway was selling the exact same bottle of wine for $22.21 less. Other Total Wines honor the price match guarantee, so there's no need to support this location. read more

This Total Wine & More is amazing. I was looking for food in the area, but remembered there was a Total Wine, and ventured in here before finding something to eat. I was warmly welcomed by the manager (whose name I forget). He was probably confused by my presence because I was walking around in wonder, as if I'd never been to any type of store before. But it's because this Total Wine is so nice that I was a bit amazed. It's a bit more upscale than a few of the others I've been too, so that's much appreciated. So, clearly, they have wine. And a lot of it. But the manager was amazing with my questions, and so was other staff. They also have a ton of wine/food type gifts, soft drinks, and also a great beer selection. I love their snack section though. They have some great offerings to make your own charcuterie plates. And I'm thrilled that I can find the Mt. Vikos Artichoke Dip, which I cannot find anywhere else. It's the best and I highly recommend you try it too. It's big and there's plenty of parking. This Total Wine is my new favorite wine, beer, and snack retailer, and I'll be back often. read more

Le sigh. It's not bad. It is wine meets Big Box. I always end up here around holidays when I need some wine options for a diverse audience. I've got my likes (big Cabs like Hundred Acre Wraith, Kathryn Hall, or MacDonald) and I know that most folks won't appreciate it, so I chase after some...fruitier or sweeter wines. I joined their club / program...and I don't think I've ever saved a dime. This is not to say it is bad. I bet if I was a frequent shopper buying middle of the road - I'd probably save a few bucks here or there. One of the best things about this place is finding beers you've never even heard of before and giving them a try. This place was kind of crowded on a Saturday afternoon but I was able to keep a social distance from others for the most part and everyone had to wear masks. There's plenty of parking so you'll be able to grab a spot here. Only bad thing is they can't sell liquor, thanks to Virginia's communist laws you can only buy that at the state-run ABC stores. Awesome wine workshop! Although I've been to more wineries that I can count on my fingers and toes, I found the workshop really helpful and understand how to properly use my senses to smell, stir, and taste buds to understand the term "fruit-forward". I tasted 6 types of wine from dry to sweet including Bruts, Reds, Whites, Rose (which is not White Zinfradel!), and Port from different regions. I like how all of the wines were affordable ranging from $13 to $40 (Pino Noir Carneros). I bought a bought a bottle of the Alsace Brut from France. The instructor was friendly, knowledgeable with a great sense of humor. The wine guide listing the rating, reviews, and taste profiles of all the wines was really helpful and I kept it after the event. The best part about the tasting is that it was paired with food! It was interesting to learn that the salty sweet duo with a savory dish and a sweeter wine pair well together. It's no wonder that a deep red is drowned out by spicy food while a White complements and counterbalances spicy dishes. I tried some of these food and wine pairings that the instructor recommended at home and they really work! After the session, I was inspired to create my own cheese board with different types of wine and my friends loved it! Although the workshop was complementary as a Yelp Elite event, I'm planning on bringing my husband to the workshop and paying $20/person. So worth it and learned so much, highly recommend it. Did you know all customers in your group must be 21 or older in order for anyone to make a purchase? Neither did I. Took my family and spent well over an hour selecting two buggies full of beverages, snacks, and party supplies only to be told we could not purchase because my 11 year old son ( in little league uniform) wasn't 21. Shopping at Total Wine is a total pleasure. I wish it wasn't alcohol but something healthier so you could buy with a clear conscious! It is spacious, very clean, staffed properly, and has all the variety a mediocre wine enthusiast would hope for. There is a small deli section and a significant section for novelty, accessories, drinkware, and tableware. The beer and cigar sections are equally well-stocked. I'm a huge fan of this place, I can't believe I've never been to one before. I came here to look for a bottle of wine as a gift. I gotta saw- I wasn't ready! I couldn't believe how big this place was and I think the staff saw it on my face. One of them stopped to ask if I needed any help - his name was Alan. He asked me a couple of questions and I ended up in the Bordeaux section. I walked up and down the aisle a couple times before I realized that the wine I picked is also one of his favorites. He stopped by and told me about it. It's called Clos Labarde St. Emilion. He also advised me to make sure I aerate it before drinking. I told him it was going to be a gift but I'm going to pick another one for me to try. He then recommended another bottle which was actually cheaper than the one I picked, called Chateau Bois Redon. I also ended up picking up a nice Sparkling champagne called Rivata. So I was carrying three bottles (didn't get a basket since I thought I was just getting one bottle). Here comes Alan to the rescue with a basket! He's so helpful. This place is such a delight. While standing at the register, I notice they have a humidor. I'll have to check that out with my husband next time. The Redon was ok, not to surprising because of the price but the Rivata was surprisingly delicious!! I am definitely coming back. read more

I have been a customer at Total Wine for over 10 years now and generally make a trip to this store for my major stock up shopping events. They have a HUGE selection of wines and beer that is sure to satisfy most wine customers. The selection is generally overwhelming to even the best of the wine enthusiasts. I have build up a list of my favorite wines over the years, but I generally like to get recommendations from the wine sommelier employees and have yet to be disappointed. My usual MO is to browse the store aimlessly for 15-20 minutes and get seriously overwhelmed by the selection. Then I generally get someone to help me (Mary, James, etc) fill my shopping cart with excellent recommendations. The second part generally takes under 5 minutes and I am off to the races! I am not a cigar smoker but my friends have good thing to say about that too! read more

My jaw literally dropped open when I walked into the McLean Total Wine. This is a clear example of the fact that clearly not all Total Wines are created equal -- this store is ENORMOUS. Like, an entire warehouse all dedicated to the glory of wine, beer, and (as the name suggests) more. It really puts all the other Total Wines in the area to shame (though, of course, convenience in location will always be a prime reason for any shopper to go anywhere, and, alas, the Fairfax one is closest to me.) Employees are very knowledgable, and they sell some seriously nifty gadgets here, like the Coravin wine pourer (preserves your wine, letting your pour from the bottle without letting air in!). Something that's absolutely going on my Christmas list this year...! In the meantime, I picked up a few bottles of nice-ish drinkin' wine, and a couple bottles of cheaper cookin' wine, hehe. read more

I love the selection of beer and can't help walking out of Total Wine with at least a 12 pack or case of bottled specialty brews. Total Wine & More is a known quantity to me. While I normally shop at their Springfield store, the girlfriend and I were at the McLean location for our friend Ruchika C's wine-tasting fundraiser. After tasting several Australian wines, we ventured out into the store for a look-see. Contrary to popular belief, I'm not a complete wine snob. That would entail me knowing something about wine. However, I do know what I like and what tastes good to me. Total Wine & More is my kind of wine "superstore" since it always has a lot of what I like and what tastes good to me. The McLean store is a large space with shelves and refrigerators stocked to the hilt with wines and beers from around the world. Aisles are also filled with stacked cases of liquid goodness. The place was definitely not lacking in wines of every varietal from every region at pretty much every price range. However, I didn't necessarily understand why they laid out store they way they did. The flow was less logical than the Springfield store which made navigating the place a bit more tedious. Nevertheless, I still managed to find some bottles of wine (not that I REALLY needed more bottles of wine) for a respectable price. One really good thing is that Total Wines usually has coupons, so my bill was a little bit less. It's all good. They have decent selection of beer for fills. Their current selection can be viewed on line. My only complaint is that they don't offer tastes of their selections before making a purchase. This review is for the "and more" part of Total Wine, because I pretty much only come here for the beer. Their beer selection is pretty much as good as anywhere in existence and I can easily wind up walking out with $200 of beer wishing I could have gotten more. There's always something interesting I haven't seen before I want to try and there's also a really nice selection of good, local beer as well from places like Hardywood Park and Lickinghole Creek. The prices are pretty good and they often have specials to take 10% of 15% off which makes them better than nearly anywhere else. That being said, because they have good, rare, fancy beers, you can still wind up spending a pretty penny easily. Still, I think this is pretty much the gold standard for selection of beer in the DC area. read more

Lots of recommendations, staff favorites, and descriptors for those of us whose palettes are lacking, and a 'pick-your-own-six-pack' section (single bottles) that delights those who are variety inclined. Not only can you avoid some MD taxes by driving from MD to a VA Total Wine, but because of distribution minutiae, a VA Total Wine has a much better selection that MD Total Wine anyways. Honestly, it can be overwhelming if you don't know what you like, and you can get lost amidst brewery and winery blurbs about the uniqueness of their liquids. But you can also use Total Wine to systematically figure out what you like by buying every type of mild buzz -bringer out there (within reason) and tasting them side by side at home. No excuses. I am California-grown, and I was happy to see many West Coast breweries widely represented among the East Coast and Mid West classics that I can get at any beer and wine on the corner. Bonus: they keep their empty boxes stacked floor to ceiling behind the checkout lines so you can buy two 'cases' worth of beer and wine and carry them to your car easily. This is a nice touch. The only improvement would be to sell liquor as well so you could make a one-stop shop for all your party beverage needs. Also, if the staff reads this, it would be nice to have a random beer sampler six-pack available for grab-n-go so I don't have to read 8 shelves worth of beer labels before choosing on a uneducated whim anyways. I walk into this store as if I walk into the Container store--with pure excitement. Even if I'm not putting a boatload of things in my cart, I still love to browse the aisles leisurely at my own pace. The most recent time I was here when I was shopping for some champagne for a birthday celebration for the fiancee. I personally am a Veuve Cliquot fan but he doesn't like dry bubbly so I asked one of the workers if they could give me their suggestion on something else. I can't recall what that employee's name was but he was SO helpful in explaining the differences between brut and delicace and directed me to bottles that didn't break the bank terribly. Side note, the bubbly (Mailly Grand Cru) was a huge hit amongst the fiancee and friends! I was also in search of a particular rose to gift to my friend and he showed me exactly where to go instead of just pointing at an aisle. When I asked his opinion on that rose since it was new to me, he said it was the best rose for that price point! Win! A lady overheard our conversation and said she was going to buy a bottle herself after hearing us converse.
