The McLean Wine Outlet has quickly become my go‑to spot for discovering incredible wines. The selection may be smaller than the big-box stores, but every bottle on the shelves is top‑notch. Prices range from affordable to expensive, so there's always something great no matter what you're looking to spend. Jon is a huge part of what makes this place special. He's incredibly knowledgeable and has an amazing ability to recommend wines based on your palate. For our July 4th party, we asked him to hand‑select the wines, and his picks were spectacular. Guests were raving all night. Even when I pop in just to grab a bottle or two, Jon always has several recommendations to take home and try. His suggestions have never disappointed. And more often than not, he has a bottle or two open and is happy to pour a taste--such a fun way to explore something new. The Wine Outlet also hosts regular free wine events throughout the year, rotating between their three locations. The McLean shop has a great upstairs space dedicated to these tastings, and it's a fantastic way to learn, sip, and meet fellow wine lovers. What really sets this store apart is the sense of community. Jon knows all the regulars by name, and even if I haven't been in for a while, I'm always greeted with a warm welcome. Pretty disappointing experience. I purchased a voucher from Amazon Deals for charcuterie and cheese and when I arrived at the Vineyard they had a very small selection of cheese and absolutely no cured meats except salami that was sitting in a fridge. I felt that the voucher was misleading since they had a very small selection. I really had to struggle to find things that I wanted to purchase and honestly it's still sitting in my fridge weeks later to remind me that this voucher was a bad purchase. After browsing through the selection and pricing of the wine (again very limited) it was pricier than I am used to. I would not return based on price and selection. read more

I had no idea this store was in the area! I wandered in today and an employee quickly gave me the lay of the land. I could find the wine tasting in the back, fresh bread had just arrived, I should let them know if I want to taste any of the cheeses, and there's an olive oil selection in the back. Be still my heart. First, I did the wine tasting. The sign said they do them on Fridays and Saturdays. It was a flight of Italian wines. First of all, they serve the wine in real glasses, not in those little plastic shot glasses. Second, they really know the wines they are serving. The first wine I tasted was a very specific varietal, and I asked if it was the type of varietal you typically get in a Sicilian House Wine. I was surprised when the employee gave me the whole lay of the land and the three different varietals that tend to be used in Sicilian wines. Second, I looked at the wines. The selection was fantastic and at great prices. A lot of wine stores I go into have wines in the $12 price point that are... fine. It takes a lot of searching and trying to get a great wine at that price point. I am excited to try a lot of the wines in this store because I saw three "value" wines I already discovered and love for sale there (at great prices). I'm talking around $10 each. It's clear a lot of care and work goes into curating this selection of wine. Third, I checked out the food. There was fresh baked bread there and I couldn't help myself. (Don't tell my nutritionist...) I picked up some bread and a couple of cheeses, plus a salami the owner recommended. I had a friend stopping by, and we are currently sampling these items. Everything is great--I highly recommend the goat brie and the triple cream. So why am I writing a review while my friend is over? Because I was raving so much to her about this place that we both realized this needs to go on Yelp! In addition to the selection of items there, the service was outstanding. From the gentleman doing the wine tasting, to the woman ringing people up, to the owner greeting each guest, the customer service was impeccable. They were helpful without being I'm-following-you-around-the-store annoying. They also give you the option of opening a wine log, so you can figure out what you had and liked that you bought there. I think that's great! I already discovered a new wine I like from their tasting. I'll certainly be back! Don't expect the wide breath of wine that a big box store has, but do expect each item in there to be curated for a specific reason. read more

I'm biased, because I used to work there, but this is one of the best wine shops in the DC metro area. The staff is knowledgeable and unpretentious. You can get a good bottle of wine priced anywhere between $10 and $100 plus. I have yet to find another store as good in this area. read more

The case and tasting discounts here are great. I definitely recommend going in for a tasting bc you will learn a lot and they try to bring in some interesting and different wines. They can order almost anything for you- just ask. My husband and I order a case of Austrian wine every couple months and this shop is by far the best price on it. They also have a broad enough rotating selection that you can go in there with any need and walk out with a great bottle that they have recommended. I suggest engaging the staff in conversation as they are extremely knowledgable- I learn something new every time I go in. And definitely sign up for their email list so that you don't miss specials and tastings!! I am still sad I didn't check my email the day of the wine and chocolate pairing :) read more

I purchased a groupon to the vineyard in mclean, VA. and I have to say the service was great. We were greeted as soon as we walked through the door. I think I told the owner that I had a groupon and he pulled my bag of wines they selected; which wasn't a bad selection. Then my sister and I did a little wine tasting and ended up purchasing two more bottles of wine. I have to say I sent about $60 for 5 bottles of wine including the groupon and I don't think that was a bad deal. read more

I dig it. The shop is fairly small, with a limited selection, which is totally what I'm looking for in a wine place. Total Wine can be fun, but it is truly overwhelming and you have no idea if a bottle of wine is awesome or just okay. The sales associate at The Vineyard informed me that they try all of the wines that they stock. That is a good sign in my book. The prices are reasonable. But with that being said, the wines are not cheap. But you go to a specialty wine shop to buy something special, not a bottle of Barefoot. I walked in, requested a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon for under $50 from Napa Valley and the sales associate was able to hand me a great bottle within seconds. read more

I worked with John at The Vineyard, and I was highly impressed with the business! It's too bad I was visiting for a wedding bachelorette party, or I'd be back all the time. This is a great small business that excels at what it does with that small hometown neighborhood type vibe. In short, I found the wine delicious and the business honest, flexible, accommodating, and serious about meeting both their and their customer's needs. I'm really impressed on three counts: Firstly, the wine. I asked for recommendations within a very specific price range (budget wines, $10-20) and I was blown out of the water by the quality. I've been wine tasting in several states, including California and Indiana, and I found The Vineyard's budget wine selection superb. Two, the customer service is superb here. I often just Google when I want advice on wine and food pairings, etc. Well, the suggestions on wine/food pairings were perfect for this occasion. John said he can offer advice for dinner pairings if you stop by the store to pick up some wine. When I offered to tip, they wouldn't take it; John explained that he was setting the example as a salaried manager. Third, I see that their attitude isn't toward providing cookie cut service offerings, but rather excelling at meeting customer needs. I reached out to inquire about something that wasn't even on the website (private tasting). They do public tasting, but I wanted to come in a different day, with about 10 people. We talked about what could be done and John arranged something. He was also adaptable during the tasting. He was prepared to tell us about the wines we were drinking, but when he saw that we wanted to chat (a bunch of us hadn't met in person since college), he stepped back and let us gab. Everyone in my group loved the event. At the end of the event, we were exactly on our prearranged budget, and no one tried to get us to buy more or sell out of our price range. I've organized socials for my professional organizations fairly frequently, more than once a year for 5+ years, and I've seen a wide range of competencies. I think it's noteworthy that The Vineyard is creative in hearing and meeting customer needs, and willing to explore and experiment; that's why I'm writing this review. Note that It's hard to spot the words "The Vineyard" on the sign from the street. It's currently the only store on the block with the words "Wine" on the sign, though, so no biggie. Also, everything is very clean, the storefront floor and counters are real wood, and there are some painted signs if I remember correctly. I didn't see a lot of unnecessary decorative flourishes- it seems like the budget is legit focused on the wine/food offerings. read more

I went into this store since I go to the StarNut and the Bank frequently. We were having a cookout so I asked the guy for red ZInfandels in the $10-15 range. He looked at me like I had three heads, obviously I asked the wrong kind of question (seemed simple enough to me). He showed me some bottles in the $18-25 range, which obviously was not what I was looking for, so I left. With about a half dozen wine stores in McLean, including Total Wine about 100 yards away (which was happy to sell me as much wine that fit my criteria as I was willing to buy), this was enough reason for me to never go back here. read more

You've done it again! Chateau La Reine Perganson Haut Medoc 2015 is amazing at $12.99, even unbelievable at 25% of by the case!! Look, I lived in Bordeaux for three years and did a lot of tasting, met everybody. I know something (not everything) about what to look for in claret, but in the low price range, I think I really know a thing or two (they are farmers). Don't just take my word for it only. Buy a bottle and taste it. This wine has unexpected smoky qualities of neighboring Pauillac and complexity way beyond it's price, plus long finish and smooth tannins the foretell 7 years of worthwhile aging. This is only one of Louis Cinelli's amazing finds. Go to this store! You won't be disappointed, whatever your proclivities. read more

I bought a livingsocial deal and went to check out the Vineyard. It's a pretty small operation they have going on, but fantastic customer service. I was greeted pretty promptly after walking in the door and proceeded to try about 8 different kinds of cheese chatting with the cheese-girl about which wines would pair best with a Tempranillo and a Garnacha. They also have complimentary wine tastings a few times a week. Selection of wine wasn't anything special, but everything seemed to be of good quality and prices seemed reasonable. Tough for them to compete with Total wine across the street, but hopefully they can overcome by engaging customers well. read more

Louis Cinelli and his staff are very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable, and the store carries a well-selected inventory of bottles at quite a range of price points. Their have free tastings on Fridays and Saturdays are a good way to identify new and affordable things to try, and Louis regularly organizes other tastings of fancier things. Like many Northern Virginia residents, I have slimmed my wine shopping down to three stores: The Vineyard, Arrowine, and (less often) Chain Bridge Cellars. Whether just from inertia or actual value considerations, I have almost ceased following DC retailers' admittedly more extensive offerings, now that my tastes have narrowed and I don't need to try every new thing that some broker ships in. What is distinctive about the Vineyard, aside from the savvy selections and genuine helpfulness of Louis and Jeff, is their (as far as I know) unique discount policies. Wines at weekly tastings are marked down 10% or more of course. Any time you can put together 3 cases mixed and get 15% off or 5 cases for 20%. But on top of that--and nobody else does this--you can buy a solid case of just about anything in the store or available on special order (!) at a 25% discount. My household goes through enough wine that it makes sense for me to buy cases. I am a not a collector of fine rare bottles--I used to have a respectable cellar back 40 years ago before prices got ridiculous--but I do want well made small-estate French and Italian wines and go through probably 8 to 10 bottles a week. With the case discount and other occasional steep sales, I can keep a variety of food-friendly bottles from Bordeaux, the Loire, the Sud-Ouest (my favorite areas), and Northern Italy for $6 to $12 a bottle. As if that were not enough, when you spend $50 or more on wine, you get a 30% discount on any food purchases. Sometimes the selection is limited, to be sure, but it is growing, and a lot of items beat supermarket prices with the discount. Check out the olives, cheeses, vinegars, and imported pasta. Go in and get on their email list. Don't miss the annual champagne tasting. read more

This is a fantastic store, with incredibly knowledgeable and friendly staff. I've never gone wrong with a recommendation from them (on the few times that we haven't loved everything on the tasting table), and Louis has recommended some truly hit-them-out-of-the-park wines. They always have food pairing ideas, and have had some very creative tasting/pairings in the past, which have been good fun. Their VA wine festival is a must-- a great way to get to know a fair number of wineries without having to go from winery to winery. They've expanded their cheese/charcuterie selection, and while we rarely indulge, they have a top notch selection in that department as well. read more

While Total Wine is in the shopping center across the street, I always come here first. The proprietor is incredibly helpful and is great at remembering the preferences and tastes of his different customers. The wine tastings on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays can look a little like a cocktail reception -- the longtime customers love talking to each other and to the proprietor. Many of my favorite wine discoveries have come from these tastings, and the sales (25% off a case of wine) can't be beat. The proprietor will even special order wine for you. read more

I have no idea what Uncle L and Toby A are talking about. My husband and I have been going to The Vineyard for years. We entertain quite a bit and each time we call The Vineyard and explain to whoever answers the phone what we are preparing and how. Each time the reds and whites have blended beautifully with cocktails and dinner. Most of the time, they pick out a wine lower in cost than our allowance. Uncle L ought to know that Louis does not carry generic wines that are sold at Total Beverage, Costco or Safeway. Also, he has ordered wines for me that I have discovered in restaurants. We are so fortunate to have such a specialized wine shop in McLean!! read more

Have been to The Vineyard a handful of times and really enjoy the selection, staff, and wine tastings. I usually go when they offer tastings so I can try the wines before buying and always come away with 2-3 wines I've never had before and really enjoy - the latest I've discovered is small production Roots pinot from Williamette Valley and some great 2010 Burgundy (a great year for Burgundy, which the staff turned me onto). The Vineyard is a great place to go if you know your palette well and want to be surprised with some things you never would have known or thought to try. I love to go to the Vineyard with a price range (say $20-$40 per bottle and an overall spending limit) and tell the staff that and a bit about my palette preferences, and let them put together a nice mix of their latest favorites. Sometimes you might get 2 high end bottles that blow your socks off. Other times you might get 4-5 low to mid price range bottles that pleasantly surprise you every time you dig into the box. It's a lot of fun to go in there with an open mind, looking to learn, and giving the staff as much room to play as possible. I do go to bigger stores when I know exactly what I want and don't have time to mingle...but when I have time, want a good surprise, want to peruse and chat about the wine, and greatly increase my chances of stumbling across a wine that I'll remember for years to come...The Vineyard is one of my go to places. read more
