Skatterbrain Dark Chocolate Banana Whiskey: Skatterbrain produces a plethora of eccentrically flavored whiskeys. Information on Skatterbrain is next to non-existent, but I can tell you that my "research" revealed all of their whiskeys share one thing in common (well maybe two if you include they're all fun flavors). That commonality is they all have an animal wearing sunglasses on the bottle. In the case of the Dark Chocolate banana Whiskey, it's appropriately a gorilla. Total Wine (where I purchased it) describes it as smooth Canadian whisky blended with the flavors of dark chocolate and banana with rich, fruity, and complex qualities. I question the reliability of that though as Skatterbrain spells it as "whiskey" on their bottle, which is typical of American and Irish Whiskey, but not Canadian "Whisky". I found the chocolate flavor to be stronger than the banana, but the two make an interesting combo. I wasn't bananas about it initially, but it grew on me, making it an acquired taste. I don't know how others drink this, but I found it worked nicely in my version of a "Dirty Monkey" (recipe below). Although I found this whiskey to my liking, I still prefer my go to banana rum for this type of drink. I was totally impressed with Total Wine and More's selection of wines, champagne, beer and liquors. I thought the selection at our local Binny's was big but Total Wine totally blows Binny's out of the water. The customer service is good and staff is knowledgeable. I wanted wine but didn't want a full bottle so the helpful salespeople pointed us in the direction where all the 355ml bottles were and it was absolutely what I needed. My husband found a rare variety of vodka (Veil) that's quintuple distilled and has very interesting flavors with some leaning botanical. The best part is that the minis (50 ml's) ranged from 99 cents to $1.50/piece. In fact he stocked up on the Veil because it's not often we come up to Wisconsin and encounter great finds like this for an excellent price. This place is the Costco of alcohol shops. As much as I like the selections at Total Wine they seem to favor their own brands of whisky which is at times a crapshoot. The store is very big with a lot of selections and although the website does give locations for products, unless you prepare ahead of time the lack of cell phone reception inside the store makes shopping very challenging. read more

Headed over on Thanksgiving Day to pickup some last minute wine for my family. I understand that working on Thanksgiving can be difficult, and I was grateful that they were still open and working. The woman there, Bambi, was snappy, rude, and unprofessional. She treated me and my girlfriend like we did not belong in the store. I thought that it was perhaps because she was working on a holiday, but we noticed though that with other (non-minority) clients she was perfectly fine and capable of being polite. I would recommend checking out other locations with fairer and nicer workers. When I'm in the area I make a point of stopping here. It's pretty much the greatest liquor store ever, it's a grocery store full of booze. Their prices are awesome and cheaper than any other place I've been (for things I like) but I'm not super fancy so I can't speak to everything. Their selection is almost overwhelming but don't worry, the staff is super helpful and will help you find whatever you need. They really know their stuff. The name Total Wines & More really doesn't do justice especially for those people that don't drink wine in which they may not even visit the store. It is more than a typical liquor store and they do have more than just wines. Just about every type of spirit, beers and wines. I'm not a scotch snob or a craft IPA snob so do they carry everything? I doubt that but who does? The point is, you should be able to find just about everything you want or at least something comparable. As most retail stores will do, they stock what will sell or what should sell. They won't stock they one off wine that you tried in Bordeaux France from a 50 hectares vineyard from Cadillac appellation. So let's rate what we can and compare them to other liquor stores in the area such as Discount Liquor (not our local Pick N Save liquor department). So let's talk about the good. Do they have an extensive selection of wines, spirits and beers? Absolutely. Do they have some that I can't find elsewhere? Yes. To compare to someone such as Discount Liquor, they have a larger footprint, newer building and more parking. Checkout lanes are usually fast. The store is really clean and rows and shelves are clearly labeled so you can find things quickly. I like that they offer classes and tastings. Who doesn't want to be educated on liquor! What's okay about Total Wines & More? Prices are okay, so to me the value is just okay. Most wines or spirits that I purchase are not the cheapest and Discount Liquor is closer so really no value to go out of my way. Now the bad (again, this is my opinion and you may not agree with me). Customer Service is not good, actually I really haven't seen customer service here. Let's compare to Discount Liquor again. Discount Liquor is not the bubbly over the top customer service but they great you and as you are walking around, if an employee is near, they ask you if you need help or if you have found everything you need. Simple question but it is nice. I have yet to have anyone approach me as I spent on average 30 minutes per visit to Total Wines & More. Even the checkout lanes the person is just average at best. As for knowledge... I can't compare as I have never been approached and I never see many people on the floor. At Discount Liquor, I am approached, I usually tell them what I am looking for and if they don't have it, they talk about other choices and give me background on those alternatives. They ask questions. So above, I still give TW&M an NA for Knowledge just to be fair. In summary, has TW&M moved the needle enough in the customer value proposition to make me go out of my way to shop there? Not really. But if you are not close to a Discount Liquor then TW&M should be your choice if you are looking for variety and selection. It's St Patrick's day and the people at work are talking about green beer and corn beef, I have the corn beef and no beer so I thought a good beer sounds good and not no crappy bar green beer so I stopped by. I have been wanting to stop by since they opened and today was the day, wow sensory overload. It's hard to imagine that you can't find an adult beverage that you like here because it's enormous. It's big, bright, clean and overwhelming with tasting stations and a humidor room for the cigar smoker. I stopped at Shell's brewery tasting station and chatted up the rep while tasting the Citra Blanc American Pale Lager, not bad so I grabbed one. I told him I was not here for this and I was actually looking for an Irish something for today and no green crappy stuff and he suggested the competition, Great Lakes Brewing Co Conway's Irish Ale, how cool is that so I grabbed a sixer also. How cool is that, I had a great helpful first impression and I have not interacted with a store employee yet. While waiting to check out an actual store employee grabbed me to come to her register and check me out right now with no waiting. I'm new to Wisconsin. I came here with zero knowledge about what life is like here or what the area has to offer. The family I'm house- and pet-sitting for praised Brookfield as a great place to shop and dine, so I decided to check it out. Not surprisingly, I therefore came across this wine store through a Yelp search of my immediate surroundings. The positive reviews about the selection and price made Total Wine & More an easy choice for my wine shopping. I'm a picky drinker, so I like a varied inventory. Immediately upon entering Total Wine & More, I knew I'd be in there for awhile. It's a big store, so the selection is indeed massive. To add to the fact that the store is large and therefore capable of carrying a large selection of wines, I was impressed that this store doesn't simply fill 90% of their shelf space with California wines. While it makes sense for a company to stock its shelves according to what's popular, the biggest disappointment for me is to walk into a wine store and ONLY see what's currently "trending", or a very small selection otherwise. I often feel that those who prefer less "trendy" wines are forgotten about during a company's ordering process, but I didn't feel this way at Total Wine & More. Even the pickiest of drinkers should be able to find something here that suits their palate. For example, I consider South Africa to be a perpetually underrated wine region. Because South African wines don't exactly fly off the shelves, a lot of stores simply choose not to carry them. I consider it a treat when I walk into a store that has more than one South African white available. I'm not surprised when I walk into a store and there are zero South African wines. Total Wine & More had 6 or 7 South African whites, along with a variety of reds (I don't drink red wine, thanks to my tendency to get migraines, so I can't elaborate too much on that). Another wine I can't find in every store is Gavi. Total Wine & More has several. Moreover, I feel like I've won the lottery if I walk into a store and they carry Picpoul de Pinet. Well, this store only has one, but at least it has one. (I wouldn't mind if they carried more, but I digress...) Additionally, the store carries wines from countless regions - New Zealand, Australia, France, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Germany, Chile, Argentina, and more...and yes...California. Tonight, I purchased a bottle of Bulgarian wine, which speaks to the expansiveness of the store's inventory. They also carry locally-made wines. I was like a kid in a candy store during the hour I spent browsing the aisles. I can only assume that the variety of liquors, beers, and red wines is comparably expansive to that of the white wines. If I'm wrong, please correct me (like I said, I'm a picky drinker: I know what I know, and that's it). The prices are fantastic! In all fairness, I just moved to Wisconsin from New York City. One of my favorite wines, which sells for $14.99 in NYC, was labeled for less than $11 here. Naturally, geography has something to do with this - everything is more expensive in New York (except for manicures, as I learned today), because it's marked up higher, and because the sales tax is higher (to the tune of .08755555, non-terminating decimal - in other words, 9%). Either way, I'm thrilled about this. To further benefit the customer, they run a special that lowers the cost of your wine if you buy six bottles out of a vast selection that qualify for the reduced price (mix 'n match). The employees at this store were friendly and helpful. They were happy to assist me with my typical long list of bizarre and complicated questions (I'm far from a wine expert, but I'm on a never-ending quest to learn more). Total Wine in Brookfield is a open, airy and well-stocked liquor store. I've purchased beer and spirits on several occasions and have been happy with my purchase. My 4 star review is because on 2 separate occasions, I have visited the store looking for a specific craft beer and have been unable to find it. Store employees have confirmed that the product is on the shelf but have also been unable to locate it. It's a little frustrating when you have to go back and forth up and down an isle looking for something you've been told exists, only to leave the store, disappointed. Prices are ok. She finally gave up and came and asked me the question instead. A couple minutes later someone else went to the table and an associate walked over and answered their question. A few months ago, I was introduced to the wonderland that is Total Wine on a trip to Dallas. Clearly the gods of wine heard my prayers because we now have one in Brookfield and I couldn't be happier. If you've never been, it's like the Costco of wine stores. It's huge and filled with bottles of stuff both familiar and not. But - how does TW stack up against local spits like Discount Liquor or Rays? Wine: A Disclaimer - YMMV, depending on your likes. TW is heavy on reds and domestics for sure. I did find a delightful selection of rose and non-champagne sparklers but was beyond disappointed to see literally 3 bottles in the Austrian section. The Spanish area was hit or miss as well and they could do a better job on New World stuff from Chile & Argentina. I think this will evolve and improve though and I found PLENTY to get excited about. I do think Ray's does a better job on Old World and boutique choices. Prices: A Again, this is on wine & probably affected by grand opening specials. I found TW to be a few bucks cheaper than Ray's and lots of wines are "mix 6, get a discount" vs having to buy a whole case. Other locations have a Rewards program but I don't that's in MKE yet. I did see plenty of bottles for under $5 as well as Chateau Petrus in the thousands. Beer: ? I'm not a beer nerd but they seem to have a good amount of larger format bottles. I wasn't at all impressed with their import selection though. That said? It's Total WINE, not Total Beer. Opening specials were pretty good - buy 2 get 1 free 12 packs on selected domestics. Liquor: B Again, Ray's probably does a better job with boutique choices but TW has most of what the average person wants at very competitive prices. Staff: A+ These people know their wine - it impressed me in Dallas and the Brookfield location is no different. They're friendly and happy to help you find something you'll love at your desired price point. What else? Just because something is bigger does not always mean it's better. That is how I feel about Total Wine. I was looking for a specific beer and while they have a huge selection, I didn't find what I was looking for. So I approached the assistant manager and asked if they had it and he proceeded to explain to me in a condescending tone that "you see these craft breweries only make these limited edition brews for a couple of months." Which I responded Yes, I understand." (I don't need someone to explain to me how limited release brews are). But, he kept trying to explain it to me even as I was walking away from him. I'm not sure why he felt the need to "educate" me; maybe because I'm a female. He sure didn't speak to the guy before me that way. An exciting addition to the area, Total Wine has an enormous selection of beer and the biggest "build-your-own" selection I've laid eyes on. I put that in quotes because many of the bottles are pretty damn pricy, a premium you pay for a single bottle over 4 or 6-pack, so it's more like they offer carriers for convenience. The cooler selection is expansive as is the selection of large-format bottled beer and specialty releases. I'm a Binny's-loving FIB that lives in Wisconsin and always hoped the chain would expand further north. Alas, Total Wine & More has answered my prayers, and then some. This place gives Binny's a run for its money. The biggest draw of Total Wine, for me, is its breadth. It's the place you can find an obscure liqueur that your neighborhood liquor store doesn't carry, and you can also find just about any bottle of wine or six-pack your boozehound heart desires. The prices are fair, when you compare to places like Ray's, Pick 'n Save or my local Bay View liquor store--most of the liquor bottles were at least a few bucks cheaper than Ray's, equivalent to sale prices at Pick 'n Save. The mix-six discount on wine bottles also seemed like a fair deal, although I didn't have time to comprehensively investigate out the massive wine section. That's on the agenda for my next pilgrimage to Brookfield. Here's hoping Total Wine is a success and they open a second location closer to the city! read more

I've been excited for this development since they first opened one by my house in Minnesota. The difference is that the city was shitty and wouldn't give them the proper sampling permits to get the full experience here. You can go in and try a couple samples, but it's nowhere near the intention of the design. There are rows on rows and bins on bins of wine. There is a walk-in cooler, craft beers, ciders and hard liquors as well. The middle area is fully of chotskies and gifts, though on the pricier side in my opinion. I like you can mix and match for discounts on pricing. Funny enough I walked out with cider and not wine, but I definitely will be back for more vino. read more

I'm always happy to see a new wine shop in town, so I stopped by on opening day to assess their selection. If you're looking for California cabs, chardonnays, and Bordeaux, I think you'll be happy here. For a store as big as it is, I noted a startling absence of what I would consider to be benchmark wines for certain regions. The Spanish wine selection left much to be desired, and didn't include stalwarts like C.U.N.E., Lopez de Heredia, and Rioja Alta. German Rieslings did not include Keller, Zilliken, Haart, or Schaefer. Won't even talk about Loire Valley selection. Italian selections from the Piedmont to Tuscany were also lacking. After about two hours or so of just futzing about, I came away somewhat shocked at the lack of selection depth. Credit where it is due, the customer service is impeccable. The employees I talked to definitely knew their wine. I found a few employees who shared my preferences (low alcohol, no fruit bombs, wines with clarity/depth/sense of place) that also lamented the lack of selection for regions outside of California, Bordeaux, and Burgundy. They provided me with awesome recommendations from wineries which the company scouts and sources from directly. For now I'll stick to Thief, Waterford, and Ray's for buying wine. Extremely disappointed in the service we received upon entering the store. Entering the store there was someone there to greet us with a taste testing. We walked up to the window and we getting ready to try the tasty treat when the manager walked by and told us to put on our masks. I stated I wanted to try the margaritas at which point he said "as soon as you are done put on your mask." Seriously. I was ready to walk out at that point. We've been doing this for over a year now, I know how to wear a mask in public. I was humiliated and did not think it was appropriate for an employee to tell me I needed to wear a mask. On 6/5/21 8:15pm at the Brookfield, WI location. Myself and boyfriend tried to purchase alcohol. Our additional guest did not purchase liquor because they did not have the item. As we proceed the check out the cashier yelled at our guest, to show their ID but they were not purchasing liquor. I asked the cashier why they needed to present an ID if they're not purchasing liquor. The cashier sated "what's the fucking problem." Everyone in lin was shocked. She then request a manager. The female manager stated someone over 21 needs to present an ID. I present my ID cause I'm purchasing alcohol. A male associate comes up and states "what's the damn problem, show the ID". The female cashier continues to say "I don't have time for this." Later a male manager, Warren, comes and says "get the fuck out" and takes the liquor. I asked for the corporate info instead he gives me his business card. As we left the store the male cashier follows us and yells "why y'all so ignorant" I yelled back "I will call the cops." He continues to harass us as we're going to the car. Later my boyfriend googles and calls the corporate number to report the incident. The assured us, we will receive a call from the DM on Monday 6/7/21. Yet not to our surprised we didn't receive a call. I'm not questioning the reason for ID. It's the behavior of the employees!!! The manager did not deescalate the situation not resolved. Instead he encouraged the behavior. If the policy requires everyone to be 21 to enter the store then card at the door. 4 stars for beer selection, 1 star for service. It's just not a good experience shopping here. It's the equivalent of booze shopping in a Home Depot, with the lazy service to match. I've wandered around this place on a couple of occasions looking for an employee only to find 4 of them huddled around the wine desk cracking jokes to each other. Maybe get out on the floor and help the horde of zombies staring blankly at the 15 ft high shelves of liquor? And the prices? For a place that drives as much volume as they do the local place just to the east beats them by a dollar or two on most six packs. Great selection, average prices, LONG WAIT TIMES. I stopped into Total Wine & More on a cold, windy Saturday. This store is still very new, having only opened a week or two prior to my visit, so it was PACKED. Luckily the aisles are wide enough for two carts so it wasn't a big inconvenience. The selection is laudable. I'm not much of a wine aficionado, so I can't speak to the quality of the bottles but there looked to be something for any taste and any budget (from less than $10 to over $100). I do know a thing or two about bourbon, though, and I was pleased to find a decent variety of brands including some harder to find gems like Blanton's and Old Forrester BIB. Prices were in-line with other retailers around Milwaukee. The staff was very helpful and friendly. Parking was a breeze. The only downside was waiting at the registers. That took an eternity, so I hope they quickly figure out when to open more lanes. read more
