Friendly staff, and the doctor is very thorough. She explained things that other doctors I've seen didn't take the time to do.

From the moment we arrived, we were treated with hostility. The first thing I was told was that my appointment had been canceled because I supposedly failed to confirm it. However, I never received a phone call, email, or text message asking me to confirm my appointment. Ironically, they did send a confirmation for my son's appointment. Despite that, I was blamed and my appointment was canceled. After that, we were left waiting much longer than expected for my son's appointment. I explained several times that my son has autism and that long waits are very difficult for him. No one seemed to care. When they finally called him in for his eye imaging, I explained to the technician that my son has autism and kindly asked her to be patient with him. She didn't even acknowledge what I said. She immediately started giving him abrupt commands: "Sit down," "Open your eyes," "Put your chin here." My son was already visibly anxious, and I was doing everything I could to help him stay calm and cooperate. At the next machine, the technician suddenly pushed the equipment toward him. He became frightened and started crying. Once again, I explained that he has autism and asked her to please be patient and gentle. Instead of showing any understanding, she abruptly got up, walked out of the room, and returned a few minutes later only to say, "Go out and wait in the lobby." I asked why, how long we would have to wait, and what was happening. Her response was simply, "I don't know... maybe 20 or 30 minutes." There was no explanation, no communication, and no attempt to continue the exam. We were simply told to leave the room. While my son sat there crying, scared and confused, no one came to explain anything or check on us. I decided to speak with the office manager. Before she even allowed me to explain what had happened, she angrily told me that I had arrived ten minutes late and had failed to confirm my appointment, as if that somehow justified the way my son was being treated. I explained that this had nothing to do with my appointment. My concern was the way my son was being treated. I told her I felt we were being discriminated against because of his disability and that they seemed unwilling to continue his examination after learning he has autism. She showed no interest in listening or helping. The most heartbreaking part of this experience was hearing my son apologize for being scared and crying during the exam. No child with autism should ever feel the need to apologize for being afraid. Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder deserve patience, understanding, respectful communication, and reasonable accommodations--not indifference, impatience, or dismissive treatment. We received no empathy, no compassion, no professionalism, and no respect. I sincerely hope this office provides proper training to its staff on how to care for patients with disabilities and neurodivergent individuals. No family should ever have to go through such a humiliating experience. Zero empathy. Zero compassion. Zero professionalism. Completely unacceptable.

No problem, things usually cost more when you have extra problems. They told me my preferred Lens was going to be discontinued after end of 2022, so my order would be the last and then I would need to switch to another brand. I ended up also getting some samples of a different brand to try. I was promised 2 weeks for my contacts to arrive. 2 weeks passed, no contacts, i call and explain what's going on, they call the supplier, call me back, say another two weeks but they're working on it. Repeat this for another three months or so. I understand delays but the fact that I have to 1) call them EVERY single time to ask where they are rather than be informed proactively that they are delayed again and 2) explain my story every single time I call, I assumed eye doctors would also use patient notes, is ridiculous. Then, I tried the samples, unfortunately, they didn't work for me and never settled on my eye or were sized incorrectly (blurry no matter how much eye drops). I called about 6 months after my eye exam to see if I could try another brand. They told me I would have to come back in and get resized and pay another $100+. I ended up going to another provider where I walked out the door only payed $20 for a new exam, under $50 for the lens fitting, and no extra charge for astigmatism. AND they gave me two different samples to try from the beginning, followed up how they were feeling etc. Th difference in level of care at Steer Optical and my new vision center is night and day. Wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.

With insurance coverage, we were told we owed $147. We then went into Lens Crafters and as I was waiting for my wife, I noticed we were given the prescriptions for glases/contracts and the credit card receipt for the payment made but not an invoice for breakdown of the charges. I went back into Steer Optical examination office to request an invoice, and the receptionist stated that they needed to refund for the Optomap retinal exam, which my wife did not receive. My issue is why did I have to request an invoice for the refund to be recognized by the receptionist who accepted the credit card? The total should have been $49 for the contact lens fitting for my wife, but we were each charged $49.

The usual stores have very similar frames with very similar profiles for much wider faces. Occoquan Optical has a completely different feel than the stereotypical eyeglass shop. Rachel has created a calm, airy and bright environment with individually curated hand-selected frames. It's clear that Rachel has considered multiple types of customers- the range of styles, shapes and sizes is incredible! I went to the shop three times- to browse glasses, to pick a second style and purchase both, and then to pick up my glasses after the lenses were done. Each visit was as enjoyable as the first! Rachel is personable, attentive and warm. Conversation flowed easily and she loved on my baby during my first visit. She also put up with my indecisiveness! Not only did I pull off at least 30 frames from the walls, but she even started a poll on Facebook when I was unsure which pair fit my face best! By the end of the appointment, Rachel understood my style enough to select a second pair of glasses off the wall- which I ended up purchasing! It's so exciting to have glasses that build up my confidence and make me feel like a trendy mama! Looking forward to building my glasses collection. I'll be back to Occoquan Optical soon!

Upon arrival, I was informed at the front desk that my insurance was not accepted and that I would need to pay upfront. This information should have been communicated well in advance by phone, email, or even a voicemail so I could have made appropriate arrangements before coming in so early. The reason given was that their system showed an additional insurance under my profile with an unrealistic expiry date of 12/31/9999, despite my Medicaid coverage being current and valid. When I contacted Medicaid, they confirmed that I have full coverage and even asked the provider to call their dedicated line for verification. Unfortunately, the billing staff member named Nina refused to call, insisting she would not contact Medicaid and suggested that I may file a complaint against her if desired. I tried to explain that her role should be to assist patients, especially in resolving such administrative issues, but she remained unwilling to help. This level of indifference is deeply concerning in a healthcare setting particularly at an eye clinic, where timely care is critical and many patients, including seniors, come with urgent vision concerns. Because of this situation, I was left with no choice but to reschedule my appointment, which may now take weeks or months. I sincerely hope that the management reviews this incident and emphasizes to its staff that patient care and empathy must come before rigid procedures. In healthcare, communication and compassion are just as essential as clinical expertise.
