Services on trunk roads (as opposed to motorways) are always a bit of a lottery: some are surprisingly good, others disappointing.
Tot Hill is one of the latter: it's not really a service station, just a collection of different businesses: a Shell petrol station, a MacDonald's, a Little Chef and a Travelodge providing accommodation. There's no shop other than in the petrol station, and a correspondingly limited choice of food.
I opted for the Little Chef, which was OK, though the service was slow - I was quoted a 40-minute wait when I arrived, although that shortened to 15 minutes after 10 minutes... At least the staff were friendly and apologetic.
Sutton Scotney is usually a better bet, but at the moment there's no petrol station there as it is being rebuilt. read more
