Friends of mine love this place and go here often so I went with them after our crazy shopping at Costco. First stepping in, I thought, oh cool, has a very hole-in-the-wall Japanese ramen shop feel to it. The decorations were cool, the place feels authentic. The chef was actually Japanese unlike other sushi places I've been to. And the service was excellent. Although they recommended the ramen, I opted for the broiled salmon in terriyaki sauce because I've had ramen before exam every other week for a year now. No thanks. My friends ordered curry udon and egg with real crab meat on top of rice. Real crab meat, I was impressed. I love that they provide green tea (macha) for free!! Whoo hoo! Warmed me up on a cold night. Miso soup was typical of any Japanese restaurant. I heartily enjoyed the salad they provided with our meal. Everything came out super fast. Such friendly servers. I was happy for the portion size. ^_^ All the sauces on our dish I thought had a bit too much thickening reagents but overall, it was good. Wish I had sesame seed on my salmon though... It is cool place to go eat a variety of Japanese food but I would not personally be willing to drive here on my own if I was craving for sushi since the price is the same as any other places in Hillsboro. THIS REVIEW IS NOT ABOUT THEIR SUSHI* This place reminds me of living in Hawaii where I first enjoyed 'every day' Japanese cuisine. Yum. Always loved the eggplant. Didn't see it on the menu this last time I visited but that was not a worry - there is always something else to enjoy. Instead I had the TenDon and it was just what I was looking for - a comforting, generous portion of sauce-dipped then tempura battered prawns and vegetables over a big bowl of rice. The meal included hot green tea, a nice salad and decent miso soup for around $10 bucks. All in all, simple and well done. I appreciated the assortment of veggies that were cooked perfectly and 4 hearty prawns!. (It was more than I could eat if my dining partner hadn't helped me out). We sometimes have sushi, but more often than not, we order a couple of main dish entrees. I have enjoyed the ramen bowls, the katsu, the salmon and many other tasty 'cooked' dishes. Everything we've ordered was well seasoned and consistently prepared. The interior is tiny, I think about 7 tables and a 1/2 dozen seats at the bar and it's not fancy at all. However, the service is professional, pleasant and speedy. Though it can get REALLY PACKED sometimes - BEWARE at lunch hour on weekdays. * NOTE:I have enjoyed all of the sushi I have tried, but I am not a sushi expert, so I have not reviewed that large portion their menu. This is one of those places where the service isn't that great, the wait can be long, the restaurant looks like crap, it's too small and your bumping elbows, and on paper it looks like it's doomed to fail. You'd be wrong, because the food is so good it makes up for all of that. It's a great little hole in the wall. Chiraishi, ramen, udon, bentos, sushi, everything here is delicious and it just depends on your mood. Reservations recommended for this place only because it is a pretty small restaurant and usually busy. Great customer service and food arrived on time. We had our toddler so the waitress were easy to accommodate for faster food speed for our table. :) Food was delicious. Highly recommend ordering the Chirashi Bowl if you love raw fish sashimi. Some hamachi & seared salmon nigiri, avo hama rolls, negi hama rolls, yakisoba, teri chicken don, agedashi tofu, and agegyoza amongst other things. Just had my dinner at Toshi's. I had mixed fry dinner, including deep fried oyster, shrimp, fish, and mashed potaeto. Was really good and price was not too expensive (16.90). Servers were nice too. However I am giving 4 stars instead of 5 because the servers did not check in even after 10 minutes after we got seated. Overall, I would come back though. read more

So come early, they close at 1:30pm and open again at 5pm. If you are looking for fancy rolls then this is not the place for you. Sushi rolls here are simple, yet with big flavor. Living in the suburbs outside of Portland and coming from California, I've come to lower my standards for Asian food. However, this is probably a new low for me here. Toshi's is an example of overpriced, low quality food in Beaverton with subpar service. It's a restaurant trying to present itself as high end when it's not. While this may seem contradictory to other reviews, the quality for the price is not worth it considering the other options available in the area. We had arrived with a group of 6 and were seated promptly on a Friday night. The menu is quite extensive, but pricey. There's two separate menus, one for individual rolls and another with combination rolls and other various dishes. I had ordered the Shoyu ramen with curry rice combination. My friends had ordered the Chirashi bowls, both regular and deluxe, a sashimi tempura, and two rolls. When we got our order, the server handed the dishes to the wrong person and didn't bother to correct their mistake. We had to pass the dishes around ourselves. The ramen was bland, the broth had no taste but lots of oil. The chasu was way too thick for one slice, and the noodles tasted like instant noodles. The curry came with only rice and wasn't exactly rich in flavor. I can't speak for my friends dishes, but no one was satisfied. I noticed that my friend's maki roll was just chopped up fish, like trash pieces of fish and not a good piece of the fish. My combo and the maki roll had awful presentation. The Chirashi was standard. The highlight of our disappointing dine in was the bill. We were charged an 18% gratuity fee for a party of 6, with service consisting of getting an order, receiving our food, and having our water filled once. There's no fine print on the menu or any warning from the waiter about the fee. Then, the waiter asked if we wanted the bill split, we agreed. But everyone's bill was actually given a 25% fee. So, we paid a ridiculous bill for what we thought would be a reasonable price for Japanese food. Overall, I don't understand how Toshi's received such rave reviews. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for good Japanese food. read more

It is very hard for me and my husband to go out and try new Japanese restaurants, because we have really good places that are closer to our house. But, on a Friday night, we had an errand to do, and this place was on the way, so it was "justified" to check out a new spot. I did read the reviews online beforehand, so I was not surprised by it being inside a shopping center. But, the inside was so cute, and decorated very comfortable and cozy, and just had a welcoming and authentic feel. The staff was very friendly towards us, and even though we didn't have reservations they communicated with us very clearly about the availability and wait time for a table. The food was all really delicious, and fairly reasonably priced. The thing that I liked the most about it, was the size of the sushi pieces! They were rolled pretty small, so it made it very easy and manageable to eat. My mouth is watering, anticipating the next time I can go back! read more

Wow. Just wow. I have never had any Japanese food as fresh as Toshi's! The salad, the soup, the sushi, even the rice was the best ever. I had the variety plate (I forget the name) with veggie tempura (kind of doughy, I don't really recommend), California Roll, salad, Teriyaki Chicken, and Miso Soup. You should be dying of hunger if you come here since the portion sizes are humongous. Overall, aesthetic atmosphere, great people, stellar food, and worthy of six stars. Bravo! read more

Moved here from LA and I love my Japanese food so I of course had to find a place. I'll keep this review pretty short. By far this is the best Japanese spot I have come across in the Portland metro. Highly authentic, sushi is always fresh, and they even have dishes that I know I cannot find at many popular Japanese restaurants, even restaurants back in LA. I probably come here once a week. I would come a lot more frequently, but my wallet wouldn't like it. Sometimes meal can be expensive, but honestly, you get what you pay for here....you won't be disappointed. 5 stars for Toshi's! read more

Best Sushi in Portland metro area! Walked in around 11:40 am for lunch and the place was packed! Waited 30 min. for the order and it was worth it. We got assorted sashimi (regular) $16.95, chirashi bowl (deluxe) $24.95, seared salmon nigiri, and shrimp nigiri. (Around $6-7 for 2pc) Everything was so fresh and delicious! So a ramen guy walks in to a Japanese restaurant known for its ramen and orders... a chirashi bowl? Yeah, I just did that. After years of stalking this joint online and having it appear, not crossed off, on my list of ramen joints to visit, and I ordered sushi. Well, at least it was good. You see, it was 90 degrees today. And while I am pretty much in the mood for ramen at all times, I somehow... sitting there at the sushi bar... watching everyone else eat sushi... ordered the chirashi. For just under $19 I got the deluxe chirashi, a bowl filled with sushi rice and topped with a plethora of fish including maguro, albacore, hotate, saba, sake, unagi, uni, ikura, tako, and tai, as well as wakame and ginger. The fish is surprisingly fresh for the hole-in-the-wall atmosphere and the (I hate to say it) kind of slap-dash way the bowl was thrown together. I'll give that the one guy slicing sushi was under the gun, it being lunch rush. And really, it's all about the fish (which was good) and the rice (which was also good). The serving size was plentiful enough that I was unable to finish it. The menu has a lot of ramen choice on it as well as udon, curry, tempura and a bunch of other Japanese standards. And I'm sure I'll be back some day for a bowl of the tonkatsu ramen. Maybe not when it's 90 degrees out (which leaves all but about a week of the year in PDX). Oh my yum! Totally authentic Japanese food and authentic Japanese sushi chef and waitresses, which has been rare in a lot of sushi places. The mabo ramen caught our eyes when we were looking for a place to eat ramen. It was really flavorful and tasty but not enough spiciness and kick for a mabo tofu. I ordered the chirashi, and it was definitely the BEST chirashi I have ever had! Everything in there was SUPER FRESH and so good! There was a good selection and variety in the bowl too. We also ordered a roll and the creamy hotate, which were both good too. The prices for the sushi is also very affordable. If I lived here, I would eat here at least once a week, no joke. The waitresses are super friendly and had smiles on their faces the entire time. The place was pretty busy at lunch too. read more

I hate you i hate you i so hate you! Why must you be so close to home,and taste so good! Should i just sign my paychecks over to you? I just can't believe it, being how i've never had faith in oregon sushi and now there are two places in my area that i absolutly love. Today i had the toshi-don, crab salad on sushi rice. Ok doesn't sound bad. it came out and looked ugly but it tasted so good. i also had the toro and yum. i just don't have any descriptive words, just Give Me MORE!. i picked off some of my friend's sushi when he wasn't looking. Sucks to be him for being easily distracted. The piece that stood out the most was the unagi. I myself am not a fan but since it was the closest piece it went first. It was delicious. not mushy, awesome texture that you know it wasn't just another piece of fish, and of course the most important thing, it taste great! read more

Unfortunately, our sushi was warm, the rice was falling apart, and the rolls had no artistic appearance to them. I have made better looking rolls myself at home. Toshi! I love their soup! A huge bowl of ramen with tofu and pork. So much flavor, so good. Their curry is awesome too. Very rich. I haven't even gotten part the plates to get any sushi yet. The folding menu is that good. A dude I was with ordered this pork chop with curry gravy and it looked like one of the best things on earth. I haven't felt spry enough to order that myself yet, it looked so rich, but someday I'm going to go for a long swim, and then play some soccer, and then maybe I'll order the curry gravy pork chop. And it smelled so good....mmmm. The only reason I dropped them a star is that lunch service can be painful sometimes. We went in with a group, pork chop day actually, and ordered. Half the orders came out at once. Then time passed. We're cool, but we need to be somewhere eventually, so we asked about the rest of the food. It's coming. The first round had long since finished, other tables were getting their grub. Then the rest came out. Except mine. Missed that one. They fixed it quick, I ate it, it was awesome, but that lunch was an hour and a half or longer. Even with two, it can be very slow. So be warned. But man, that food is so good. read more

Beaverton might not have to much going on , but dammit we have a good Sushi place. Just a short drive from my home, in a little strip mall, lives Toshi the most fabulous Sushi place in all of Beaverton and perhaps beyond. Remember what your mother told you - don't judge a book by it's cover. Toshi isn't the most glamorous of places but it packs a delicious punch. I started with an ice cold kirin ichiban (duh) and tempura. The tempura was fresh, pipping hot and krispy (thats right - with a K because it was so fn' good). We ordered 3 rolls which came out super fast. Since we only order 3 rolls we only received 1 soup and 1 salad. For every *2* rolls you order to get a soup and salad...I thought that was pretty lame, most of the time you get that regardless! My other gripe is that my the soda came in a can. I don't believe in no refills, this is America for Christ sake! Luckily the sushi was great and our meal only came out to 29$! I was full, satisfied, and it was inexpensive. My fellow Yelpers did not steer me wrong - this place is incredible. The fam loves loves loves Japanese food of all styles. We definitely have our favorites and feel pretty spoiled to live by Syun, but this place knocked our socks off. The hubs and I got a combination of plated dinner, sushi, and one izakaya style dish (yes, now we know that was a critical error - way too much food)! The fish for the sushi was incredibly generous and the quality was top notch. The hubs got teriyaki chicken and it was very unique and delish. I ordered a mackeral izakaya dish that was probably the best I've had - very lightly battered and fried in a sweet miso soy broth with green onions. This place is small - be prepared to snuggle with your neighbor. I also noticed that most parties over 2 had called in to get a reservation - smart move because the place was packed. My coworkers raved about Toshi's so much that I decided to come back to Beaverton over a weekend to check it out. Toshi's did not disappoint. The best sushi I've had yet in PDX. Toshi's is small and tucked in an unassuming suburban strip mall in Beaverton. There's not that many tables but always a wait. The service is good and the food even better. The fatty tuna was amazing. While a bit pricey, totally worth every penny and bite. read more
