Beautiful Hotel, Vanderpump Rules Vibes, and a 5 AM Weightlifting Wake-Up Call!…read more
A beautiful hotel, but definitely a little more Vanderpump Rules than I was expecting! The moment I stepped inside, I felt as though I had somehow wandered onto the set of SUR or Pump. Everywhere you look, the walls are adorned with photographs of young, attractive men and women, reminiscent of the calendar-worthy photo shoots featured on the show. Apparently, subtlety is not part of the design concept!
Mind you, I ended up on the floor housing her restaurant and bar, so perhaps I should have known what I was getting into. This is one of the newest Hilton properties in Scottsdale, conveniently located right next door to Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall. Food Network star Giada De Laurentiis also has a restaurant on the property, so there is certainly no shortage of celebrity-inspired glamour.
The rooms are spacious and beautifully appointed. I loved the waterfall-style shower, but the real focal point was a large shelving unit stocked with high-end liquor. Nothing says welcome to your hotel room quite like having your own little luxury liquor display. Not exactly what I was expecting, but certainly in keeping with the overall theme.
The pool area was gorgeous, and I especially appreciated that there was a separate pool for guests over 21 and another for those 21 and under. A little something for everyone, whether you're looking to relax in peace or enjoy a livelier atmosphere.
Now, for the part that nearly drove me over the edge!
My biggest disappointment was being assigned a room directly above the 24-hour fitness center. Apparently, my room came with a complimentary soundtrack of clanking weights, banging equipment, and what sounded like an Olympic weightlifting competition taking place directly beneath my bed. The noise continued late into the evening and resumed bright and early at 5 AM. Not only could I hear everything, but the floor and bed actually vibrated every time someone dropped a weight or used the equipment. Reminded me of those cheap motels when I was kid where the bed vibrated for a quarter minus the quarter.
I was told the problem was that the gym floors were not padded. Really? For the amount of money spent on this hotel, you would think someone might have considered investing in a little soundproofing or, at the very least, some decent gym flooring. Perhaps a 24 hour gym directly beneath guest rooms wasn't the most brilliant architectural decision, either.
This was especially frustrating given the three-hour time difference coming from the East Coast and the fact that I had already gotten very little sleep the night before. I was hoping for a relaxing night's rest, not a front-row seat to The Midnight Fitness Show.
To their credit, the staff did move me to another room, but even that became a bit of a production. Housekeeping wasn't available to prepare the new room, and I had a birthday brunch planned for later that morning. Not exactly the seamless hotel experience I had envisioned.
I will say that I spent a good deal of time people-watching, which was practically an attraction in itself. This seems to be the place where young women come to meet their sugar daddies, and some of the outfits I saw made me feel as though I had accidentally wandered into a casting call for The Real Housewives of Scottsdale. Let's just say that the dress code was definitely more less is more than I am accustomed to!
All in all, the hotel is visually stunning, the rooms are lovely, and the pool area is fantastic. However, between the over-the-top atmosphere, the interesting clientele, and the gym-induced earthquake beneath my bed, the experience was a little more entertaining than relaxing.
Beautiful property, but if you're looking for a good night's sleep, I'd recommend requesting a room far, far away from the gym!
