I'm still not entirely sure why I decided to try BJJ. I'm not an athletic person (my best sport is bowling if that tells you anything, and the thought of running a mile sends a cold chill down my spine) but I wanted to try something new and this was close to my house. I moved from Orange County to Los Angeles a couple of months ago, and was desperately looking for a jiu jitsu school. I went to visit a few of them. First off, if you are reading this review, asking yourself if you should join this BJJ class, DO IT, tomorrow, and look no further. First, you rarely go to a class where the actual owner, and black belt professional teaches all the classes, and is completely hands on with all of his students. Second, professor Thiago is very patient with his students, BUT will push you very hard to be in the best shape possible while perfecting your technique. Third, there is a verity of training partners, from white belts to brown belts, and every partner that I have had is very good at drilling, which is very important to me. Thiago has an amazing skill with the kids where he is very cute with them, but also expects much discipline and work ethic from them. Something all our kids need! Lastly, this studio is like a family, and I was welcomed in with arms wide open from the time I stepped in. We all need a wholesome community, and you will find that here. Thiago really cares about his students, he cares about the reputation of his gym, he cares about your health and fitness, he cares about you getting better. My husband comes to open mat here occasionally and he really likes the facility and coach Thiago. It's small, but very well maintained and the mats are top notch. My daughter has been doing jiujitsu for 3 years - 2 years consistently, however, she has generally been the youngest and the smallest where she currently trains. My husband noticed there were several kids around her age and size taking the kids classes so we decided to try out a Saturday class. While I am perfectly capable of rendering myself unconscious without assistance, for my 48th Birthday I decided to give myself the gift that keeps on making me tap out, BJJ. I researched tons of BJJ spots in the South Bay but decided to check out Torse House first, primarily because of the location. I'm glad I did. From the minute I walked in, Professor Thiago and the other students were super friendly and welcoming. No egos, no "tough guy/girls", just cool people who love BJJ. Thiago is a great teacher who explains and demonstrates things clearly and methodically so it's easy to catch on to the techniques. My first class I was partnered with a blue belt who helped me while we trained as well. Not to sound cocky, but I just started and I already feel confident that I could probably tap out my 3 year old son. In all seriousness, I'm not a person who feels comfortable in a class situation yet I am about to head to my second class of the day at Torse House. That's how much I like it. My first visit I also happened to watch a kids class and they were loving it. Can't wait to get my son over there to start training. This place has become my second home! I've been training on and off the past couple years but Prof Thiago instantly brought back my love for Jiu Jitsu. My coworker brought me here and said I should check it out as there was a free trial class. I didn't have any intentions in signing up at first as I live a little ways away and wanted a gym closer to home. But after the first class, I was sold! Training at Torse House is well worth my hour commute. Even better is that it's Checkmat affiliated so you know you're receiving excellent instruction and are part of one of the top BJJ Academies out there. Here is why I'm proud to call Torse House home: 1. Prof Thiago Prof Thiago is top notch. The way he teaches class is broken down in a way that anyone can understand. He's super patient when any of us doesn't understand a move and gives individualized instruction if we need help. He has improved my game so much in such a short amount of time and has been so encouraging that I may start competing soon. Besides the excellent instruction and attention to detail, Thiago is one of the most chill and down to Earth guys I know. Plus he's cute and beautiful LOL (not my word, inside team joke). 2. Torse House Team Everyone I have trained with has been super supportive since the start. There are no egos here, I have rolled with a broad range of people from other white belts to black belts and everyone in between. They are all there to make you better. We even have a group chat together and joke around with each other. Torse House feels much more than a gym, but family. 3. Cleanliness As a germophobe, this one is super important to me. The mats are spotless and constantly cleaned. & I haven't encountered anyone who hasn't showered or worn a dirty, sweaty gi that I'd be grossed out rolling with them lol. 4. Schedule I work in the area so I needed a gym that would work with my work and school schedule. Some days I train at 6 am and get an excellent workout right before work (Yes, I'm one of those crazy people to wake up before 5 am to go to the gym). Other days i train after work and spend my evenings at the gym. If my schedule wasn't so jam packed, I would do 2 a day training if I could. 5. Fitness Jiu Jitsu is one of the best full body work outs out there in my opinion. I have only trained there for a month and I have already lost significant weight, gained muscle mass, and decreased my body fat %. In short - Thiago is a passionate humble guy who makes everyone feel like family. I've lost 40lbs in about 6 months and have never looked back. He knows how to inspire the youth he teaches as well as the adults 15-40 that he works with in a way I've never seen a practitioner or trainer ever do. So after flirting with the idea for some time I decided to give it a shot after seeing a friend of mine who attended saying it was good. His prices were affordable and I could go morning or evening 5 days a week and had an option on the weekend. So I was sold, he let me find my way, slowly gave me more instruction and challenged me. We've become more than friends he's truly family. I've had weeks where I went 5x a week and after turning 30 I didn't think that would be the case for something new like this, so I look forward the next 6 months and lifetime of training until the day Thiago gives me my black belt. About 2 1/2 months ago, I was looking for a place to start BJJ. I live in El Segundo and "Googled" "Jiu Jitsu" and Torse House's website came up. One day, while I was out in town, I noticed one of the students who trained at Torse House. I asked him about his experience there.
