My daughter went for a trial class and its was one of the worst experiences she had at a gym. She had previously been a part of a kickboxing gym near her school and loved it. But she literally came home in tears at the way she was treated during the class. read more

Went here years ago and still think about its lessons to this day. No better place in the South Bay to learn how to defend yourself and practice the intense arts of Muay Thai and boxing. It made love both sports and also showed me the amazing world of women's pro combat sports, with their champions and pros Jackie and Janet both welcoming and setting great examples for everyone in the gym without any egos. This place truly made me happy before I moved! read more

Boxing Works is a gem in the South Bay. A very distinguished gym with legitimate fighters and coaches with world-class experience. I've been training Muay Thai with Donavan Mckiver who is a world-class Muay Thai artist and true professional. Boxing Works is an incredible gym in the South Bay of LA. read more

Boxing Works - Martial Arts Near Me - Lawndale, California

Training is good but the gym is full of egotistical fighters and incompetent coaches. My 15-year-old son was pitted against much more experienced fighters who beat him up in "sparring". Sadly many MMA/BoxingGyms like these are everywhere. You need to be careful and watch your back as these people do not care about your safety and want to hurt you. You piece of shit coaches should be locked up. read more

Training here is very good, the coaches are very nice and helpful. Many professional fighters here, learned a lot from this gym.

Is this place still open? Tried calling several times but no answer. Was interested in signing up for a membership. Then decided to drive over but it was again closed. Outside looks janky and there are always homeless vagrants sleeping or wandering near the front door. Would not feel comfortable leaving my car parked here or arriving super early or late like a normal gym membership. read more

Training here is strong. As someone who has traveled and trained in numerous gyms in NY state and California, I can see why champions are made here. Each class begins with a lesson plan that can focus on technique or fighting strategies. The junior coaches are sharp and experienced fighters themselves. The head coach, Bryan Popejoy, has so much attention to detail that he polished his fighters well. I miss training in the classes and sparring there. Probably one of the strongest gyms I've ever had the pleasure of training at. read more

Boxing Works is as authentic to traditional Muay Thai as you will find in America. Coach Popejoy is truly one of the premier Muay Thai instructors in the entire country. A lead US national coach for IFMA, PanAms & all international USMF events. All the coaches are experienced and well accomplished fighters, and now are amazing coaches. The staff is courteous, patient, and extremely knowledgeable. The facility is well kept and always clean. Wish there were 10 stars to give. Highly recommended!!! read more

Great potential. I went here as a recommendation of a friend who trained at Boxing Works years ago before they moved to this location. Perhaps the gym was a completely different atmosphere back then because he sold me on a great experience that I absolutely did not have. I understand quality diminishes over time for a busy business and maybe that's what happened here? I had a complimentary boxing class to check out the gym. I advised the front desk that I had never taken a boxing class before and they assured me that was fine and dandy to go right into a group class. Totally wrong. During the class, I felt that whomever was stuck being my partner didn't get a good session, as they were burdened with getting me up to speed in place of the instructor actually doing so. The majority of class I felt lost and completely out of sync with the class. It was really hard to keep up and I felt terrible and guilty about my partner getting annoyed with my inability to keep up. As a beginner, I need individual instruction and I was told that's absolutely not an option with the gym membership. In order to receive individual instruction, you must purchase the membership IN ADDITION to making an effort to seek out a trainer who will then decide if they want to train you or not. Then it's whatever price they set with you plus the gym membership. Also, it's not guaranteed that you will get a trainer to work one on one with... What kind of business practice is this? Additionally, I was greeted with a thick, musky mat smell that stuck to my feet and hands for hours after leaving, no matter how many times I washed and scrubbed - I ended up using dish soap to rid myself from the smell. Overall I'm dissatisfied with my experience at this gym; I could not justify 199/month no contract or 159/month contract, for group boxing classes, that as a beginner, seem very subpar. It was not what I was hoping for and still searching for a place to call home and blow off steam a few times a week. read more

Had a private small group session with Mike for a friend's bachelor party event. I had so much fun! Mike was super friendly, and attentive, and gave great instruction for a first timer like me trying out Muy Thai. The gym is spacious, and all of the staff was incredibly friendly. The owner, Bryan has a ton of experience as well, look him up, you'll see his track record is rock solid. Had such a good experience, I know I'll be returning soon! read more

*This is a place for boxing and/or muay thai. Fantastic mentors and instruction. Great individuals with great personalities, diverse too. If you're a beginner or "intermediate", you will most likely find someone else your level to train with. You get what you put in. Great way to build self confidence in self defense and get in good shape. Plus, it's fun. I recommend giving this place a shot, "FIRST CLASS IS FREE". You have nothing to lose. Give other places a shot too (seriously), like I did. I ended up choosing this one. :] PS: I started about a month ago, and will be training here for 2 more months. I have to go back to Seattle to finish my EE degree. :[ read more

Boxing Works has some of the best and highest level Muay Thai and Western Boxing technique and drills you will find in SoCal. Bryan Popejoy is a well known and well respected head coach and there are many great fighters here such as Janet Todd, Nathan Ward, Jackie Buntan and many other both Pro and Amateur fighters. Boxing Works is also a great place to go to if you're just looking to get in shape as well. I can't wait to get back in there Post-COVID! read more

5 stars the many reviews of this gym and it's staff speak volumes. If you want to learn authentic Muaythai or just regular Western Boxing in the South Bay...This is the place! The owners of the gym are wonderful people. There is definitely a "family" type atmosphere. This is a great place for anyone to learn. I highly recommend it to anyone including kids and people who might hesitate because they are beginners. The new gym just opened next to the Galleria and the Guitar Center. It's a good app time to check it out if you were thinking about joining a gym. read more

Seven years ago, I began looking for a place to train Boxing and Muay Thai. Most places just didn't "feel" right. Either the training wasn't what I had expected, or I would get some mean glares from the members and staff at the grittier gyms (and I hadn't even signed up yet!). Then I walked into Boxing Works. There were no mean stares, and after seeing some guys in the class kick pads I said to myself "I want to kick like that". I was just looking for a great place to train. Here I found that and a second home. Everyone has a friendly, laid-back demeanor; however, your workout won't be "laid-back". Boxing Works offers Boxing and Muay Thai training; whether you want to train for recreation/fitness or are interested in competition/self-defense, you're covered. There is also a fitness kickboxing class that blows away the ones offered at a 24 or Ballys. Children can benefit from the training as well in the children's MT class. The facility has a ring, several varieties of punching bags, a weight room, and a treadmill (or you could also run by the beach just blocks away). If you're thinking about giving Boxing/MT a try or if you just need a more fun way to get in shape, I highly recommend that you come check out Boxing Works. read more

I started with this gym about eight years ago, and after 5 years of training all over the place (including Philadelphia, New York City, Irvine, and in Thailand for over a year) this gym is still the place I call home. Bryan Popejoy is the head trainer and owner of Boxing Works, and he is one of the best instructors in the nation. He was a champion fighter in his career and has continued to be active in the Muay Thai community by continually training both fighters and active fitness enthusiasts. Duke is another coach at Boxing Works who focuses on the training of the boxers. He is very technical in his training and develops some great fundamentals for anyone new coming in to train in Boxing. For fighters or aspiring fighters, there are a good number of currently competing professional and amateur fighters that can help prepare you for any type of competition if that is the route you want to pursue. For fitness enthusiasts, there is no better workout than Muay Thai and Western Boxing. I won't go into the science of how great of a workout it is on here, but the results from kickboxing and boxing will speak for itself. You will lose fat quick and gain lean muscle that will help you along your fitness goals! And here you will learn the proper technique that will make you hit harder, lose more calories per workout, and also prevent injuries compared to gyms like 24 hours or Spectrum! Gym has a class area, a heavy bag area, and a full-size ring and full weights gym in the back. They also have a small changing-room and shower so you can shower after you sweat. Boxing Works also has 5 personal trainers who specialize in Boxing, Muay Thai, and Strength and Conditioning. Bryan's kids classes are also fantastic! The kids seem to really enjoy their training! read more

I've been taking traditional boxing classes here for about two months, and my experience has been excellent. I'm a mid-30s boxing novice, and all the coaches and staff have been super patient with me as I pick up the fundamentals. The other students are great as well, everyone is always willing to lend a hand. I can't praise Coach Duke and Bryan Popejoy enough. These guys know their craft, and take a lot of joy in teaching it to their students. This is a great spot. read more

It's been a long time since I've gotten my ass motivated enough to proactively seek a means of getting back in shape. I suppose a move from lazy Nashville, TN to "everyone is fit" Los Angeles has a way of doing that to people. In any event, I have always been a huge fan of boxing, and Thailand. I don't think you'll find a better way to pair those two interests together than Muay Thai. The "Ajarns" here are phenomenal. You aren't walking into a Rex Kwon Do Karate Studio, here. These guys take their time to learn the true art and customs of Muay Thai. Then, they spread their love and knowledge of Muay Thai to all who want to learn. Including you. Good news if you want MMA and Western Boxing training.. they have it too. Infamous one-sentence review of Hermosa Boxing Works: "If you're reading this from home right now, get off of your lazy ass and get to this proper Muay Thai gym to learn a real sport of culture and defense." Chok dee Krap! read more

I've been going to Boxing Works for a little over a year now and all I have to say is this place is GREAT! More importantly, I should say it's the people here that make it great. Ajarn Bryan Popejoy is easily one of the greatest teachers/instructors I've ever had and the other instructors are equally skilled and talented. The classes have a relaxed feel to them but trust me, when you train here you get good instruction on technique, an EXCEPTIONAL workout and learn some very valuable tools that you will always have. Give it a try, you've got nothing to lose. read more

Whether you're interested in learning Muay Thai for fitness, self defense, or competition, Boxing Works is the place to be. The energy and passion the instructors (especially the founder, Bryan) have for the love of Muay Thai is reflected upon the students who train there. Bryan is so patient and can teach in all levels. He is all about letting a student just work and grow, but at the same time, making sure you understand that you have to put in the work to get the results you want to see. The gym has a weight room, an open mat space, a boxing ring, a ton of bags, Thai pads, mitts, free weights, and everything else a student needs to progress in whatever benefits they want to get out of training. I live in Pasadena and drive to Torrance to train Muay Thai because the instructors, the students, the work, and the facility is that damn worth it! read more

This review is long overdue. The gym is awesome! You're not going to see any superstar fighters such as myself walking around (J/K) but you're going to learn from some guys that know what they're doing and want you to improve on your technique and ability to fight Muay Thai both defensively and offensively. Joined about 5 months ago but was nervous for a couple months to get in there because I was out of shape but I now know it was a waste of two months. There's beginners, intermediate and advanced fighters training in there so you'll easily find someone to work with that's on your level both experience wise and cardio wise. Don't feel embarrassed or ashamed because we've all been there. Put on your reeboks and just do it! Muay Thai changed my life and I'm happy to be a part of a gym that cares. Boxing Works - Muay Thai camp - Martial Arts Near Me - Lawndale, California

I love this place. I've been with Boxing Works for close to a year now and every class is a learning, motivational, and challenging experience. I come out of every muay thai class feeling as though I've accomplished something. All the muay thai coaches Bryan, Mike, Danny, and Duncan are awesome. All the coaches emphasize technique but each teaches the art with their own twist allowing for a different look at the sport each time. Be forewarned, if you do decide to come to BW you will get Muay Thai in your blood and will find yourself watching Thai fights online late at night and foregoing family and friends to go to the gym. read more

I had the honor of training at Boxing Works for slightly more than 1 year; geographical limitations caused me to leave the gym. After getting a new job and moving to a new home, the thing I will miss most is being able to train at Boxing Works. I have never been in better shape than when I was able to train 3-4 times per week at BW. Both the foundations class and combat athlete program provide superb physical training and instruction. Each and every instructor has a wealth of knowledge and their own, fantastic teaching style. I honestly have never been more 'gassed' than after 3 rounds on the thai pads. Even when I progressed to sparring classes, no one was going full speed trying to kill the noob (me). While the sparring was tiring and bruising, the training and learning was immeasurable and unattainable without near live action speed. I will truly miss the outstanding training, but I will miss the people even more. Ajarn Bryan Popejoy has grown a haven for all seeking to improve their health and learn more about the art of Muay Thai. They offer a free 30 day trial period, which removes all excuses from giving it a try. I will be sure to visit when I am in the area, and I hope that anyone thinking about any kind of combat training gives BW strong consideration. I can only hope the next gym I join is half as good as BW. read more

For over 4 years now I have been attending Boxing Works, practicing Muay Thai, and making life-long friends and experiences. I started training at Boxing Works at age 14, as I looked for something fun and unique to do with my time. Over time, I've fallen in love with the sport of Muay Thai, began competing under the instruction of top-notch, world class coaches at BW, and have put myself on a life path that I never would've imagined. Boxing Works caters to everyone - kids, men and women alike. The aspiring fighter, the one trying to get in shape, the one looking to learn the true traditional arts of boxing and Muay Thai. Boxing Works is my second home, and I couldn't possibly recommend it enough to anyone looking to learn how to fight, get in shape, or learn a combat sport. I stumbled upon this place just because it happened to be close to my new house... After trying a few other places in the area I could tell right away I got really lucky with Boxing Works. I've trained at some amazing places with world famous people and I have to say that the owner/head trainer, Brian Popejoy is up there with the best. The staff and students are very friendly and easy to work with. I haven't run into any attitudes and you get a strong sense that Brian takes a lot of care and pride in seeing you improve and succeed no matter what your goals in the class are. If you're anywhere near Hermosa this is the place to train. read more

Boxing works is where I first began training muay Thai, and I have been training muay thai off and on for about 8-9 months now. Recently going back into Boxing Works, I noticed I liked this place better than any other gym that had muay thai being instructed in. Brian, the muay thai coach, teaches people how to properly execute muay thai. He holds multiple belts and has been training muay thai for over 20 years now. Not only do they teach muay thai, they also have kickboxing and boxing. This place is great for a day to day recreation. read more

I did a Muay Thai kick boxing class here.. the instruction is very technical and very good.. This gym is awesome! By far the best spot to train in Muay Thai. All the trainers at Boxing Works are very thorough. They take their time studying their students so that they can make a tweak or two. The gym itself is a little small but the people make up for the size. No big egos only great people to learn from or learn with. So if you're thinking or planning on training in authentic Muay Thai, then Boxing Works in Hermosa Beach is the place to be. read more

Very cool spot. Found this place while in town looking for a boxing gym. Went to the website that I found through yelp, looked up the class schedule. Fortunately for me the 6 pm boxing class worked for my schedule.. Once I got there I signed the waiver formed and jumped right into class. The student mix consisted of both beginning to intermediate levels. The boxing coach had allot of good knowledge and technical skills. The coolest part of this class was the outdoor boxing ring. The coach watched-everyone close as the sparred. The environment was laid back and everyone had positive attitudes... Whenever I'm in town, this place will be my go to workout spot! read more

This gym gave me the chance to live my dream! I spent years trying to learn my striking to prepair for MMA. I began thinking I couldn't learn it. The Passion and precision of the instruction really set Boxing Works apart! Six months after finding them I had a 3-1 record and was on my way! I have recently had my MMA debut which I won thanks to the high level of Muay Thai that I have been shown giving me an chance to use my new skills to bring the fight to the ground. I am a Brown belt in Jiu Jitsu and with out making my opponent respect my striking I couldn't have gotten close enough to get ahold of him to win in such a dominating fashion. Thank you to all the amazing instructors and students for this opportunity! I couldn't recommend this gym any higher to anyone. It's really a special place. Very friendly and no nonsense! read more

Early morning classes and evening classes fit perfect! You can either get the basic package or the unlimited package and train as many classes as you want. Coach Bryan, Mike, Danny, Anthony (to name a few) are always creating the best programs and environment for us to train. And the fellow members of the gym are very kind. Ajarn Bryan Popejoy is a well-known man in the Muay Thai world and the training and coaching is as authentic as they come!
