Wonderful family gathering prior to our daughter's wedding in Edinburgh. Excellent service and atmosphere. Food and lodging perfection.

The entrance very confusing. The restaurant was lovely but some staff more attentive than others. We asked for the bill twice before having to go up ourselves. The portion size was out of proportion e.g. my husband had loads of hummus left because he only received a few crackers. The leisure facilities had no staff there - you were left to your own devices to find out how everything worked. The lockers were complicated - again signage very poor. Nothing flowed properly. Quite disappointing really. We got this as a gift - not sure if I'd go out of my way to return.

Service upon arrival was fantastic and and were quickly checked in and given directions to our room (thank goodness!) The room was spacious and had its own sauna which was super cool. Each room had a balcony and the shower/sinks had an interesting layout without a door, but somehow fitted well with the design of the room. It was quite rustic in terms of design and I've rated one less star because the room was dusty (I pulled up the blind and heaps of dust fell on me) and the walls appear to be paper thin (10pm and I could hear conversations through the wall and children carrying on in the hallway). The views from the room look directly over the lake and mountains in the background which was utterly breathtaking. So onto food. We were seated by the window with great views of the lake again. Service was prompt and friendly which was lovely. For starters: bread with oil and balsamic, and scallops with black pudding. Both pretty good and the scallops were cooked well. Mains: beef burger and the rib eye cooked rare. Again, both good, not amazing though. Dessert was the peanut butter parfait which was clumsily plated but tasted good. Overall it was... good. There was really nothing that stood out or wowed me though. Breakfast the following day was good, we had the classic Scottish breakfast which was hot and tasted good, but again nothing remarkable. Overall a lovely stay due to the views of the lake. It was generally peaceful and relaxing and a really great gift idea.

New Lanark is a village designed by Robert Owen, an industrial revolutionary who wanted to give his workers a safe place to live and work and to halt the exploitation of children. He ran mills which have now been converted into an interactive museum, a visitor centre and a hotel. We booked the hotel for our wedding reception (we had the meal in the function room in the hotel then moved over to the Institute in the Vistor Centre for the ceilidh as there was more room). Had a few worries because there is a noise limiter in the hotel function room and there was the possibilty that one may be installed in the Institute room and our band wouldnt play if there was one , but that didnt come to anything. They also cocked up some of the room bookings for our guests who were staying, but all of the staff were extremely apologetic and gave us room upgrades and smoothed everything out. On they day though, they were excellent. I can totally recommend Lee, who made the day run like clockwork and also Helen at the Institute for being so accommodating and for putting on a fab spread for our evening guests! The food was very good, much better than I expected from a hotel wedding with 120 odd guests having a sit down meal (it should have been good given the price, but I often think that wedding food in that kind of venue can be mediocre at best!) The wedding packages as always were quite expenisve so we just paid per head for the meal. We transported some of our flowers from the church windows to use as centrepieces for the tables, we had our own piper, we didnt bother with different coloured linen, we brought our own wine and paid corkage (bought from the Wine Society), so we managed to save a bit on the package which had stuff in it we didnt need or want. I must say though that they were really flexible with substituing and negociating the packages, so if you had your own piper you could swap to include canapes or something of similar "value". We just had too many things ourselved to warrent the package and to warrent the substitutions. Wonderful day - ran like clockwork (though I did end up being a little late!) but thoroughly recommend NLM

The only staff member that has helped us is Ashlee the front desk, girl. When I first called about my son who got a bug bite and it was swelling up really bad and we needed help. The concierge told me that there was no one here to help us and that we could attempt to take him to the emergency room but because we were from out of the country, they probably wouldn't see us. I am so glad I called back and got Ashlee the front desk girl because she is actually a nurse. She came to our room, examined the bites, cleaned them and then wrapped them and sent us to the emergency room where we were completely taken care of without any charge! I do not know why the concierge would have not helped us and gave us more to worry about when we were already stressed out. We also received a $250 smoking charge letter because the housekeeping saw My Husband's cigars and smoking stuff out when he was leaving to go play golf he got his stuff out to take his cigars with him. I took my two year-old son for breakfast and came back to only my bed being made in my room and with a letter under my door stating that we had smoked in our room and we were being charged $250. I called the front desk, asked to speak to a manager and was told that they would call me right back. I had to call three times and wait for two hours before anyone even called me. I am now in my room, waiting for the management to contact housekeeping to see if the charge will be reversed. I find this extremely frustrating, considering how much money we have paid to stay here. I also feel that the rooms are outdated and rundown compared to all the other Fairmont I have stayed in.!

When I brought this issue to the staffs attention, they didn't even offer me anything. Other than that though, the staff was nice. Overall would recommend, but next time I would definitely look at the other options nearby.

I'll be honest, I was puzzled by the location of this boutique hotel and wine bar. Having lived in…read moreStirling for five and a bit years, I knew that Friars Street was the street which students ascended/descended to reach either the club on the street at the bottom or the club at the street at the top. After all, I was a Stirling student for four years - a reasonably well-behaved one! - and had seen firsthand the havoc that takes over Friars street in the wee hours. So, I was a little perplexed that they'd picked such a central location for the hotel, all things considered. And, not long after Friars Wynd had opened its doors, there was a deadly attack on the street. Jeez. Forgetting the location, Friars Wynd is completely different from its much-loved predecessor, The Junk Rooms. And they have done such a good job of making the place look so fresh and bright. There's a lovely bar in the corner and ample room for seating, and a selection of fresh cakes displayed by the window. You can tell instantly that Friars Wynd is worthy of the 'Boutique hotel' title because it feels so luxurious from the moment you step inside. And if the rooms are adequately soundproofed then I'm sure a night's stay would be a blissful one. I've had both lunch and drinks at Friars Wynd and I was impressed by both. The owner is a really lovely, passionate lady who, on both my visits, welcomed me and even remembered me the second time. Lunch was delicious and it was just the spot for the kind of evening drink we were after. My only comment would be that some background music would really do good in creating even more of an atmosphere, especially in the evenings. I do know that the owner is looking to branch out to live music and jazz would be just perfect for Friars Wynd! I do hope Friars Wynd grows, because they've got just the right attitude for a new business; in aiming to impress absolutely everyone that comes through their doors.

In the back and beyond of sterling in search of an elusive breakfast we stumble upon what is apparently the only place that seems to realise that people want to eat before 10am. We came in and both ordered the full Scottish breakfast and wow was it worth it. Locally sourced meats and cooked to perfection. My only slight down point is my tattie scone was a little hard for my liking however the other half likes hers hard enough to hit a nail with so I won't mark them down for this. The food was freshly cooked and bacon was crispy. Coffee was nice and well made. The service was impeccable. While we were in another customer came in and asked for something off the menu and it was instantly accommodated. If I could give 6 stars I would.
