Came for Valentine's Day in the dining room (counter was booked). The food was pretty decent! A lot of chicken as advertised. Most of the skewers were pretty good - the service suffered. They seem understaffed. The line to check in was very long and slow. A table near us had some issues also (sounded like they didn't get their first skewer until 90 min in). But overall it was a fun place to try!

This place is undeniably the birth place of high end, tasting menu style yakitori in NYC and quite possibly the entire United States. It's the only Yakitori restaurant in the US that held a Michelin for seven consecutive years under the leadership of Chef Kono - who has moved on and opened his own space down in Chinatown. I wanted to see if Torishin can still deliver a Kono-esque style, meat slinging, smoke and booze filled experience. I mean come on - this is THE fountainhead of high end Yakitori. I was able to book a chef's counter seat 48 hours beforehand, which means it's not necessarily a "hard" reservation to get. I like that though. It pisses me off when I can't blow $200 on a meal due to a combination of frenzied bot traffic and opportunistic college students sniping reservations to resell at "top" (aka Instagram trending) restaurants. The restaurant itself is warm and slightly dated in the best way possible. I ADORE tastefully dark, Karamatsu paneled walls and prints of imperial Japanese artwork - it's deeply nostalgic to me as a kid from Jersey who's bi-monthly highlight was going to sushi or hibachi. If possible, request counter seats that are facing west because they have the best view of the yakitori preparation and grilling. The yakitori itself was outstanding. If you do the omakase menu, they'll mostly give you conventional cuts along with a couple of surprise courses layered in. If you want that delicious organ meat (I mean who doesn't crave chicken hearts?!), you'll have to pick a different, slightly more expensive menu. I didn't know that going in - but blame that on myself for not reading anything about the place beforehand like I typically do when I book fine dining experiences. The only star deduction in this review comes from the drinks here. Honestly I'm an idiot for not just ordering a bottle of sake like a normal person. The two cocktails I had were virtually flavorless. If you come get the sake and beer. You won't regret it!!

Delicious yakitori!! We sat at the counter seating for the imakase course which was a great way to experience this! My favorite dishes were the chicken heart and chicken neck, both very tender and chewy. The service was also great, the waiter came to clear plates very quickly after every dish. The atmosphere really reminded me of Japan, it felt like we were in a high end spot in Tokyo. It's definitely a splurge but the quality of the meal is worth it!

I came here with a friend a while ago and we made a last minute reservation easily. The service was excellent and the food was well prepared. The ambience was so so and didn't feel elevated. This was however a solid dinner spot in the area.

The food was a little salty. I went there for dinner for the pre-Theatre Omakase experience because all the dishes were decided by the chefs they gave us so many chicken dishes. It got a little bit tiring after a while would've preferred more variety like some fish or steak or other types of meat. The servers were nice, but very odd that they all tried to speak Japanese when none of them were actually Japanese music was nice and jazzy.

Solid yakitori! I did the chef's counter - Torishin has three options: chef's counter omakase (fixed menu), select counter (choose skewers/temperature) and kitchen table. The vibes are quite lively around the chef's counter and with tables nearby though a bit loud, the select counter is in a separate room. Staff were very attentive and kind, not intrusive at all and chef's easy to talk to. The yakitori itself was pretty good but personally didn't find memorable. The service is quite efficient with not too much time between courses. My favorite cut was the signature chicken oyster, the others were simply fine. They were fairly juicy, not too hot. The gizzard was a bit too chewy for me. The tofu and shiitake mushroom were interesting selections! The drink menu has a solid number of sake and wine options. Dessert I chose the panna cotta that was creamy/soft but would've preferred sweeter. Overall it was a solid meal and reasonable for the price, but for the quantity/quality, I'd prefer to eat the price increase and go to Kono or Torien, but I would otherwise return to try again!

Wow, I went here tonight and it was the perfect meal. It's the perfect place to go to before or after a Broadway show it's a few steps away from all the Broadway shows!! I love how chic the restaurant is. you walk in and you're totally transported to a whole different world which I absolutely love the food was so good. It was so freshly yakitori was the best I ever had. It's Michelin rated and the service was excellent. The yakitori chefs really listened to what my preferences were so I really enjoyed every bite. The prefix Omakase meals totally worth it. It's so much food. Totally worth it!!!

TLDR: Torishin is one of the spots that you should consider if you're looking for a yakitori tasting. IMO the Select Counter is worth the premium for the overall experience and the sheer variety of yakitori available. If you're looking to avoid organ meats - chef can accomodate but if you eat it all, you can have it all. Torishin was on my list for a long time but waiting to find the right occasion to try it. I'd been to the standard counter in the back once before but never the select counter in the front. It's a bit pricier than the back one but if you're looking for that really authentic Japanese yakitori experience, this is a great spot. Chef will assemble the greatest hits but will also check to make sure of your preferences. If you don't like organ meats, he will avoid serving those but if you're looking for the true head-to-tail experience; he can provide what you're looking for. You may wonder just how full you'll get off of yakitori but I can assure you that we were quite stuffed by the end. My favorites were definitely the chicken oyster and the chicken tsukune or meat ball. If you've never had an oyster, there are only two per chicken and it's incredibly tender with this amazing flavor imparted by the Japanese white charcoal. The meatball is also very tasty with the egg yolk sauce served along side it. The conclusion dish is cool because you can choose between Japansese hot pot, chicken and egg rice bowl or a ramen that chef prepares. You don't have to go select, the back counter and general dining room are also very enjoyable as well. Bottom line, Torishin is a great place to dine especially if you love Japanese food and chicken.

Who doesn't enjoy yakitori? A selection of grilled meats paired with a tall glass of beer. Well... it's not always done right. Which is why I chose to try Torishin while visiting NY. It's surprisingly difficult for me to find a great yakitori spot in CA. So I made a reservation and went all out here. I went with the omakase with all the add ons. While it was a splurge, it's one of the memorable dinners I experienced. Service was on point in that very Japanese kind of way if you know what I mean. I enjoyed all the yakitori itself as they were cooked well and you can really appreciate the quality of chicken used. The more forgettable things were the smaller dishes in between. The scallop add on and wagyu i would definitely pass on. If I were to ever come back, I'd go all in and order a la carte for the yakitori menu. I did notice there wasn't use of tare. Most were served lightly seasoned and had the choice to use the sides of chili powder/other seasoning. Didn't really get to explore the other areas of the restaurant but seems as though there are different sections based on what kind of yakitori experience you want. The interior is very distinctly Japanese. Overall, I enjoyed my time here and think it's a solid choice if you're craving yakitori.

Great option for those looking for a unique yakitori omakase experience in NY. Very modern, and the chefs did a great job. Each dish was very well seasoned, and despite it being a yakiTORI place, I did enjoy the pork and wagyu dishes served. The meats were well cooked, however, I would've liked to see more variances in the seasonings and marinades for the different pieces of chicken. My other complaint is that I did expect the dinner to begin at the same time for all six seats at the counter and that wasn't the case. For the price itself, I'm very happy I got the experience, but I would want to try some other places before revisiting in the future.

It wasnt the worst meal I've ever had but it was no where near the best, and did not feel worth the money that was spent. Definitely do not recommend the omakase, but it could be a fun experience to order from the SELECT bar. Our group originally booked the omakase at the counter for a group of 4, but then added one person. This couldn't be changed online so we emailed and asked if our reservation could be updated to 5. They said that we could either do a group omakase at a table or sit at the SELECT counter (which I believe is where you order a la carte). Since our group wanted the omakase, we opted for a table. We were promptly seated once our party arrived, and the place is very nice and clean. There was a menu highlighting the omakase but we forgot to take a picture and they were taken away once we started. In total there was about 5-6 chicken skewers, duck skewer, 2 veggie skewers, 2-3 different appetizers, scallop dish, a couple soups, a rice dish, and dessert (ice cream). Honestly, if you had just ordered a la carte it might have been cheaper. While the chicken skewers were juicy, nothing was particularly amazing, and it was noticeable especially for the scallop dish that the plating was very inconsistent (my dish had a lot of sauce while my husband's barely had any). Our waitress, while friendly, also could not answer any of our questions about the food and had to ask another to confirm. Since we were seated at a table, it was also a little disappointing not being able to experience the grill and eating the skewers fresh. It was honestly just a confusing experience given the price we had paid. It made a little more sense when we learned that it had lost its Michelin star. At the end they did give us a little candle as we were celebrating our friends engagement and the staff was very friendly throughout. Our waters were never empty. The bathroom was also super nice and relaxing, with fancy bidets.

Well this is my 4th time to TORISHIN and my last. It's now $140 but even with the two new year's dishes and no opportunity to add pork and wagyuu it was overpriced and boring. The lighting was bright and no music. The servers were lame. I love the master chef but it wasn't special enough for mostly just chicken with little variation.

Can they accommodate a shellfish allergy for the omakase?

Is the meat seasoned with spices or sauces or is it just grilled meat using the special japanese charcoal ? Thank you

The different parts of the chicken are all prepared differently. Some are simply grilled but served with sauce. Other meats are brined or seasoned. Each part tastes different, surprisingly good.

How long does the chef omakase counter service take?

It took us under 1.5 hours. It's pretty quick.

To drink, I had a Hot Organic Super Matcha Tea for 4.95. It was alright tea, and I wish teas were included in the price point, as otherwise, this place feels pretty traditional. In terms of food, I only ordered from the seasonal menu, so I'm not sure how the rest of the dishes are, but from what I had, I would go back for a light traditional meal. My appetizer was the Dashimaki Tamago/だし巻まき卵たま, or sweet savory omelet with daikon for $6.98. This came with three pieces along with a little dollop of grated radish. The pieces had a light sweetness to them along with a bit of savoriness. They were juicy and a bit bouncy while maintaining some softness. This was standard and good. My main dish was the $19.98 Beef Tan Tan Udon, or ground sirloin beef, spicy broth, baby bok choy, kikurage mushroom, scallions, and sesame seeds. While I have preferred udon from spots like Raku, the udon had a mild chew to it, and they were still good. The broth had a mix of sweetness and spiciness with a nice depth of flavor. The vegetables inside tasted fresh, and the meat added some richness. This was good as well. I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to go here, but the food was good. If you're in the area and looking for no frills Japanese dining in a more comfortable atmosphere at pretty decent Midtown East prices, I would recommend this place.
