Home cooked food since 1912 in a small nostalgic town. My friend's son, "Unabelly", found this gem on his smart phone when we were about half-an-hour away, traveling back east after visiting National Parks and old ghost towns. Quite frankly, we stopped at some amazing places during our 16 days on the road, but this was the best of the best. Our server, Affable Hannah, must have had octopus arms and roller skates because the joint was jumping with locals and she was the only server. The food was excellent and perfectly cooked and the coffee was also excellent, bottomless, and only 99 cents. All three of us also had the gooseberry pie. The crust was perfect and if you like pie, I strongly recommend this type of tart, small, tasteful berry. Don't pass this place up if you're in the area! read more

I would probably give them 5 stars, but I was only there once, and I tend not to give reviews the benefit of the doubt... but this place had my awesome-diner-radar going off, just for full disclosure. I had some sort of breakfast "skillet", and I have to say, most places are fixing up your starch, veggies, and protein and calling it a skillet. On my morning routine when I'm not cavorting breakfast places, I make a pretty good breakfast skillet. I just throw in everything I have, an over-easy egg, and viola, it's pretty awesome. But going to a restaurant has the effect of giving one the _memory_ of home-cooking, but rarely does it prick that special part of one's brain that actually makes one think it is the real deal. Topsy's actually did it. "I don't know how, but they found me", as Doc said in that one movie... So I kept thinking that maybe the first bite was a fluke, but I was wrong. The skillet actually kept getting better as I entered into it's breakfast-noir world of secret satiation. I'm sort of exaggerating, but it was such a surprise (the middle of some small town off of I-70? Who'da thought...) I was pretty impressed. I hope to make more long drives in the morning on I-70 just to be able to try more of their menu. read more

My husband and I had breakfast this morning at Topsy's for the first time today and it will not be our last. They serve breakfast all day long. My husband had the big biscuit,which had two open faced biscuits and two sausage patties and two eggs, covered with sausage gravy. I had one egg, one slice of bacon ( I could have had sausage) and toast. The meal came with hash brown also. Every thing was wonderful; fresh and homemade. Service was fast and friendly! The only downside was cash only, no debit or credit. We will definitely return for other. Meals! read more

If you are traveling across Missouri on I-70 & are hungry, pass up the chains and come to this great spot. My mom, my three-year-old and I had a great breakfast here today. The Mickey Mouse pancake was a hit with the kiddo, my mom said the biscuits and gravy were great and I loved my Topsy Skillet. The food was made with pride and the service was friendly. To find a non-chain option along I-70 between KC and Columbia, you have to get off the beaten path a bit. I recently had to be in Boonville by 10 a.m. and was looking for a good breakfast option. Thanks to Yelp, I was able to find the perfect place. They have the standard diner selection of egg/meat breakfasts, omelets and sweet breakfasts. We both opted for an omelet, which happened to be that day's special, so it came with hash browns. We probably could have split the omelet and still been stuffed. The food was delicious, the coffee was good and the service was just right. Topsy's is easy to find - just go straight south after you get off at the exit, and look for it on the east side of the street. It's clean, delicious, and worth the few extra blocks to escape from the fast food/truck stop glut. read more

Our family stopped in for lunch while driving across the state. You will find the restaurant with a quick detour into town on a sleepy road just minutes off the Interstate. The decor is quaint midwestern diner-ish and the food was all tasty. The onion rings looked amazing so we ordered an appetizer of them to share. They were hands down the best we have ever had with a great breading and soft onions that easily could be bitten without pulling out of the breading. For our meals, our table ordered a cheeseburger, a kids Mickey mouse plate (pancake, bacon and tots), the french toast sandwich and the chicken fried steak. All were excellent but the top winners were the french fries, the onion rings and the chicken fried steak. The french toast sandwich was good however the ham was a little overpowering for my taste and the french toast taste was more muted than I had hoped. Would definitely stop back by if I am ever driving through at a meal time in the future. read more

On my way to Ft Riley decided to find a place to sit down, enjoy a cup of coffee, and an amazing omelet that was surprisingly not so expensive, certainly beats a fast food place on I 70 West! Wow!! I asked the waitress what was the best for breakfast. She suggested the French Toast sandwich probably the last thing I wold have chosen, but I tried it. Absolutely wonderful!! A ton of ham cheese on egg battered toast and then drizzled with syrup. My husband had the breakfast scramble topped with gravy and a pancake which great as well. I have to agree with Thane, I would definitely recommend this above a truck stop. Prices and food were good, I would go back. I had the hash (as did my parents), which was Good. If I go back I would go for the omelets, as I'm not a huge breakfast potato person. We ended up in the little place on Main Street after peeling off Interstate to mail a Father's Day card. It was just the type of place I was looking for, and an opportunity to sample Midwest local food, not chain food grub, It says this place has been around since 1912, and the character shows. Very easy to imagine the local farmers coming in for decades, no generations. We had simple breakfast ordered off the menu, simple scalding coffee like we sometimes partake in. I had a biscuit and gravy, wife enjoyed a short stack. She pointed out that the syrup was warm. My B&G was very good too. Waitress was very attentive, maybe too much so, two times my ratio of coffee sweetener cream was messed up. But I prefer that to no refills for sure. Some local "good ole boys" visited with us a bit, they were nice. Probably seldom see strangers that meet our profile. I hope next time in Midwest we remember this place. The very old place was clean the people were nice. It has been here 106 years, sure it will be open next time. read more

We like the fresh homemade taste of mom & pop places. Topsy's didn't disappoint. Actually they were even better than expected. Fresh vinegar coleslaw, broccoli salad, tasty meatloaf, amazingly juicy yet crispy fried chicken, rolls and the coconut cake were our favorites. They've been in business for over 100 years. My wife is from Concordia and she recommended Topsy's for breakfast. It was your classic small town diner experience. Service was excellent, food was very good and the price was nice too. I guess this place has been around forever, but recently changed owners and as far as I could tell the new owner is doing everything right. Most of it was a breakfast buffet but they also do pancakes etc. That said, we went on a Sunday and I felt like I'd intruded on the whole town - the locals in there pretty much glared at us the whole time and I felt pretty bad (and self conscious) for crashing the party.
