A refillable soft drink (Pepsi products) complemented a two meat tray (burnt ends and brisket) with sides of fried green beans and and fried homestyle chips. The meats were disappointingly dry, and bland. I ended up saucing both. In contrast, both sides were excellent, and I especially recommend the voodoo seasoning for the chips. Started with Burnt ends, ended with the double portion Hobo dinner. The Brisket is Great the sauce was good. But the sides will throw you. The potato Salad was a big surprise not what I'm used to being from the South. The home made Kettle Fries the Baked Beans were different again vinegar taste but Damn it was good! Passing through and deciding to stop for our first restaurant since leaving Mesa, AZ and destination Minnesota! This was a wonderful stop! The hostess welcomed us with excitement as we were "passers through" and she wanted us the experience their amazing food (clearly). Good came out quickly, waitress was very sweet, and the gentleman had a warm goodbye. Cute place, too. I must say, we don't usually have the warm was anywhere we go like we did here! We were passing through the area today and saw the past reviews for this place and decided to check it out. When we first pulled in the parking in the front was pretty full but there is a lot of room in this "Shanty"! The front area had a bar and small liquor store and seating to the left and right. I would recommend the covered outdoor dining area in the back. The entire place had really cool decor and it was very homey. I ordered the Hobo Pack which comes with your choice of 2 meats and 2 sides. I chose the Brisket and Smoked sausage with potato salad and bbq beans. Everything I had was homemade and smoked there. Even the sausage was made on-site. It was all really good but the beans were just ok. My wife had the BBQ nachos with brisket. We did not read the menu close enough and discovered that rather than tortilla chips it comes with homemade potato chips. It was different but the chips were very tasty! Our waitress was super nice and it was almost like we were just talking with a friend. All in all it was a great experience and would definitely recommend. read more

Hubby and I found this restaurant through Yelp. We've been here several times now and the food and service are always fantastic. Their burnt ends are so good. I've been to some of the "best" bbq restaurants in KC and have had dry burnt ends more times than I care to remember. Their pulled pork is also excellent. Had a smoked burger with pulled pork and coleslaw, some of their in house chips (ribbon style--I had bbq and Parmesan seasoning on mine) and a piece of house made pie was taken home. It was all very good and our waitress was attentive. A lot of times I can't taste the smoke on food but it was there on the burger and just right. They sell some liquor and merchandise in the restaurant as well. A selection of oil cloth, some funny tea towels, that sort of thing. Some of their salads looked good too. read more

Well worth the few extra miles off route 70. Stopped here when traveling for work. I was there for lunch. It wasn't too busy but it was start to pick up when I was leaving. Atmosphere was very inviting. It was clean and offered both indoor and outdoor seating. The service was top notch. They all seemed to genuinely care that their guests have a good experience. I had the fried Brussels sprouts as an appetizer and a meal selection of two meats and two sides. I chose double burnt ends, beans and potato salad. The burnt ends were slightly dry but they are burnt ends and that tends to happen. They were still very tasty. The smoke was far from overdone which is terrific since I can't stand overpowering smoke flavor. The beans were so flavorful. I loved that they weren't a bowl of sweet Smokey mush. The beans were in tact yet soft and had clear flavor. Slightly Smokey, a little sweet and perfectly tangy. The potato salad was excellent as well. I tried the zucchini lemon cake for desert and it was heavenly. This will definitely be my lunch destination whenever I'm in the area. read more

Update since I wrote this - this place is the best barbecue for miles in Western Missouri. GREAT food and great quality every time we go here, and now my wife has to get her Shanty fix at least once per week - voodoo chips and ooey gooey butter cake are "icing on the cake" to the great flavorful and tender smoked meats! 2/28/21 Dined in tonight, and they make much of their food from scratch. The smoked brisket was good, and the smoked homemade sausage was EXCELLENT!! Even the iceberg lettuce wedge and homemade coke slaw was great! My wife had pulled pork - it was tender and smoked just right! The homemade potato chips were flavorful and cooked just right! This is a great place to eat and yeah! Looks like an old red bait shack combo liquor store but inside it's very clean and the folks greet you with a smile. Tried the "Memphis" which is a pulled pork sandwich w homemade cole slaw. Very good with the homemade chips! Also had the the "Trinity" which is both pulled pork & brisket sandwich. I don't give out 5 stars easy, but this one is worth the trip if you are anywhere close to Higginsville. Yes, get off 35 going North/South in MO to enjoy this place. Pork ribs tasty and plenty of meat, just enough fat to make them melt in your mouth. They are cooked perfectly, they don't fall off the bone but you can peel the meat off if you want. I did because we got our meal to go and I was reaching over to get my share. I had some dry and some with house BBQ sauce. I like eating ribs dry to get the true flavor of the cook and rub, then I lather some up. The other meats we got were brisket which is cut thin, and burnt ends. Seriously seriously good. I managed one piece of brisket before it was inhaled by my son, great flavor and cut. The Burnt Ends were like a snack, just popped in your mouth, a little crunch, but juicy inside done to perfection. I love BBQ as you can tell from my other reviews. After a day on the road and finding lodging in Higginsville, we looked for area restaurants that are not fast food and lucked upon the Red Shanty BBQ. Although they close at 10 pm, they were so kind and generous when we walked through the doors st 9:30! We had local KC beers with our burnt ends, tender & delicious! Four our main, the three of us split one of the bbq sampler plates (suggested for two people)- brisket, sausage, pulled pork, ribs, bread and pickles. It was fabulous! Smokey, tender deliciousness! The desserts are homemade, but we were too full, today's dessert special was Hummingbird Cake, yum. Don't forget to order the homemade potato chips for one of the sides, it is a huge portion covered in voodoo seasonings and Parmesan. I like it a bit more vinegar or at least mustard based. I think every BBQ joint should have 3 options; Vinegar/Mustard based, Hot, Basic Sweet. The deserts are really tasty too.
