Recently went to this Tops and can confirm the racism / ageism others have posted about on Yelp. My husband and I recently went to this Tops (he is a white male, I am Indian, both in our 30s), and the lady at self check out made it a point to watch how we took care of scanning items like a hawk, not doing that to any other patron at the store. At the end, when we had a wipe in our cart, she asked if we didn't scan something and came to inspect, which again, she did to nobody else. While the manager I spoke to seemed very sorry for what happened, the fact that such individuals are employed at Tops is ridiculous. It's tough that they're the only supermarket near Hunter Mountain; but recommend you try and shop somewhere else. read more

It was our first visit to Tops supermarkets and our impression was fine. The decor is bright, clean and wide-spaced. The overall environment is well-maintained. The fruit and veggies look pretty fresh and delicious with reasonable price and a great variety. We also love their pastries and bought a box of sweet rolls & chocolate muffins. read more

We booked an airbnb in Tannersville to celebrate my sister's birthday, so we went to the Tops Friendly Market at 6350 Main Street to get some steak, cake and beer. Everything was fine until we got into the line and met the cashier named Karen; she was chatting with a customer in front of me, then she pointed at me and asked me to step back for multiple times (which I was already six feet apart), the tone of her voice was very loud and rude. I stayed a little bit and watched how she treated other customers who were in the line after me, and it turned out pretty normal. She even chatted with a customer without a face mask. Corporate leaders may not be able to change the world, but they can certainly change their world if they can teach their staff with basic courtesy and "Racial Equity in a Workplace"! read more

Awful service all the time. Bottle redemption machine out front always out of service. No one cares to help clean or reset it. The machine doesn't accept all brands, including products I've purchased at that location. The bigot that runs self check out should be let go. She excludes anyone of a different color. We only chanced upon this supermarket because it was up the street from a house I recently rented, but I'm just learning that this is the only supermarket for miles and miles. Even if I had my pick of supermarkets, I wouldn't be too mad at having to shop at Tops for their wide selection of everything you could need, from coffee to pasta to fresh fruit and vegetables. We bought a fair amount of plant based meat for the vegetarians in our group, all sorts of snacks, and even had our pick of different brands of beans since we wanted to steer clear of any Goya products. The lines moved fairly quickly and it didn't feel overly crowded. I initially expected prices to be lower, especially since we were visiting from NYC, but this is a ski town and the prices reflect that. Both customers and staff were all masked up when I visited and we didn't run into any of the flippant attitude described by other reviewers. read more

Tops IS open and is the only full grocery store in the mountain top. They have organic milk, decently priced at 3.99 Great deals when the deals are good -- their buy one get one free deals are worth taking advantage of as with all grocery stores just check expiration dates. Their advertised sales might be different for Saturday's vs sundays worth double checking and definitely worth getting a Tops card to make sure you get the best savings. The cashiers have been really nice and caring - one time I checked the wrong receipt and thought I was double charged, the manager I spoke to over the phone was surprised by the mistake and still willing to refund any error and when I called to correct my awful mistake the other manger was very forgiving and helpful and said he would relay my apologies. And so much more convenient than driving off the mountain top! read more

If I could give it a 0 star I would. The grocery itself is fine, an ordinary supermarket, but the cashier we met there was out right racist. I was there with my 3 other friends, we are all Asian in our late 20s and mid 30s. The cashier, Karen, asked us for all our IDs for our beer. We all provided government issued IDs, 2 New York drivers license, 1 New York State ID, and 1 USA government issued working permit card with birth date on. She rejected them and said they could be fake. The manager on duty came by and insisted her to proceed our order and approve our IDs, which she did very unwillingly. She then deliberately bagged our grocery in a very slow speed clearly in a manner to annoy us. The customer behind us was irritated by the whole ordeal, and expressed very rude comments towards me and my friends. The cashier, Karen, then proceed on a racists conversation with the customer when we were still clearly within earshot. I am not sure if we just happened to met the 2 most racist people in Tannersville or this is the culture in the town. I definitely do not feel comfortable or safe to come back again. read more

This is kind of like a Pathmark or Stop & Shop. It's a huge supermarket with everything you could possibly want or need. It's the only supermarket for MILES near where I was staying, and thankfully so! The prices are extremely affordable, with many items on sale. If you don't have a member's card, no worries.. the cashiers will scan theirs so you still get all the members only discounts! read more

Unfortunately this is really the only major supermarket in town, 5 minutes from Hunter Mountain, minus the local convenience stores that are combined with the gas stations. Half of the vegetables were bad already. Not really sure where locals go for a fresh market because the vegetables here look like it has been sitting there for a while. They do have a good amount of packaged items available that is normally available at other stores. Surprisingly they have a couple organic packaged items, such as milk, eggs, etc. But unfortunately no organic vegetables, but not surprised. There is a beer and wine aisle. All in all, try to pack as much as you can if you travel into town, and come for emergency shopping. read more

It is what it is, which is the only supermarket around. They have most of what you need, sans specialty items or certain organic options. The occasional "buy one get one" deals on packaged meats is definitely kind of sketchy, but it's made up for by the surprisingly well-stocked and varied beer aisle.
