Extremely disappointed with the condition of the parking lot at this Tops location in Rhinebeck. There have been multiple dangerous potholes that have been unattended to for far too long. It's not just an inconvenience, it's actually become a hazzard! For a business that charges premium prices and relies on regular customer traffic, there is a minimum standard of property management that should be met. It is completely unacceptable to neglect an issue as basic, and as critical, as keeping your parking lot and surrounding area safe. Customers deserve better, especially in light of the regular support your store garners from their hard earned money. I'll be taking my business elsewhere--and i will encourage others to do the same. read more

I've been going to Tops for years. It is clean and the produce is fresh. The people are very friendly. I've never had any problems there. They do not have a super big seafood department but I've always found an adequate for my needs. I prefer to go there, then some of the bigger supermarkets around. read more

In 2015, the parent company of Stop & Shop and Giant supermarkets bought the parent company of Hannaford, after which they divested themselves of 4 stores which became Tops Markets including this one, formerly a Stop & Shop. Of those 4, (the one in Wappingers Falls has closed), I expected this one would be the most successful. Every incarnation of this store, from the original Grand Union, to S&S, and now Tops, has been somewhat unique to the area, because of the variety of items they carry. I've always been told that this was primarily to attract the Bard College students to this store. I think that's pretty accurate, as I was pleasantly surprised by the inventory here. Not only is it a good variety, but it was extremely well stocked, even after 6pm on a Sunday evening. The quality of the meat and produce was quite good. They had some reasonable loss-leaders. I liked the beef display, the beef looked fresh, was clearly marked, and it was quite reasonably priced. I'd buy beef here. The store also had a couple of specialty items I was seeking which I haven't found at other grocery stores locally. There's also a Starbucks inside, perhaps also to lure Bard students. Unfortunately the Like Affair (it was never love, sorry) ends there. Just about everything that was not on sale here was at least 20% more expensive than anywhere else I've shopped, if not more. That adds up. If I lived locally, I might still come here for convenience of one-stop-shopping, but for the miles I'd drive to get here, I could hit at least a half-dozen other grocery stores with more competitive prices overall. read more

My first time in this location. Wow. This supermarket is VERY CLEAN and brightly lit. The one downside was that the layout upon entering was a little bit confusing because patio furniture was set out to close to the entrance which could cause a bottleneck during rush time. Since it was my first time in the store location, it took me a moment to get my bearings and locate the sanitation station. SPECIAL COMMENDATION to the cleaning crew who did an outstanding job. Everywhere I turned shelves were well stocked and cleaning was underway. I even saw somebody in the dairy section sitting on the floor so he could better reach underneath the dairy case to clean it. As SKUs and product lines go, the selection was about a third less of what you would find in ShopRite or Stop & Shop. Organic section was limited but the basic provisions were there. I had to make a stop at the deli counter where Chris prepared a lovely roast beef and provolone sandwich for me then served it with a smile. read more

The deli department is incredibly rude and tries to upswell you from house brands. I'm not talking unhelpful, I'm talking rude as in giving you sassy commentary on your order and giving you grief for asking for more than one item. Kinda shocking. read more

I stopped in for a magazine. There's a store directory hanging from the ceiling where it said magazines were in aisle 21. I walked all the length of the store to aisle 21 to find there were no magazines there. The magazines are in aisle 16. I went to the magazine section and found half of them upside-down. At Customer Service I said "you'll have to change the sign that says the magazines are in aisle 21." then I said that half of them are upside-down, and she smirked and said "well that's because there was inventory yesterday," and turned away with a satisfied smile. I said "you'll have to turn them right-side-up for your customers." why is it that people who work in places like this are so happy to put you down and tell you where you're wrong. So, I always liked tops, except now during this pandemic they didn't set up anything online for people who have food stamps. Pretty much if you are a mother and needs grocery for your children you are OBLIGATED to go to the supermarket, cause they don't allow to use food stamps online in their instacard. That's pretty bad, especially for some old people who live with that and for single parents. I called them and the lady on the phone was just "sorry". Pretty ridiculous. Produce dept is a travesty. It is RARE to find good Fresh vegetables here. You can get some fruits but not vegetables , whenever I have veggies on my shopping list or hope to grab something for a recipe, I end up not getting it all together cuz it's so terrible. Always wilted, brown, old, crappy. ALSO BEWARE OF EXPIRATION DATES. So many times I have bought milk yogurt or cheese only to get it home and see that it expires the next day. They move the close to Expire stuff to the front. This has happened at least 4. times to me. I always tell myself to check but sometimes you forget . I once bought specialty BEER here that was almost two years expired!!!! I have twice bought cheese from their cheese section that was expired. read more

Please don't make the same mistake i made today from this business. I went in here to get your average deli-made sandwich and although i generally get the sandwich with boars head ham and boars head cheese with lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise for half the cost of what i got today with store brand ham and store brand cheese (Signature Club brand), when you factor in the kaiser rolls which tasted a bit borderline stale (that i couldn't put my finger on until much later when being eaten). when you factor that along with a drink (which posed a problem subbing in a less expensive PureLeaf Diet Lemon tea for my normal Diet Lemon Snapple tea which they were out of and which would've cost a bit less and would've been tastier), i only had a set number of dollars to spend. I mean there were diet Snapple's of peach tea in the bigger size but i cant stand peach tea and love Snapple's Diet Lemon for its sweetness. But those too were more expensive and i wouldn't have had enough money to pay for that on top. Thank goodness they had my backup in a size i wanted in the flavor i could tolerate on top. The rest of the order turned out alright at the register, though its always been a problem inputting my phone number and giving my points earned to someone else just because i didn't want to pull up my number from my Instacart app for the right number and entering this number into the self checkout and the only reason i use this machine when checking out at Tops. Ive contacted Tops Customer service and have had no luck getting this number fixed when they look it up by phone number - because much like other times i never have my correct card on me and don't run on keys and were running behind on time. read more

So my overall experience at tops in Rhinebeck was amazing. I usual go to the one in Lagrange but this morning I decided to go here. I Am so happy that I was able to get the majority of things I needed. I went bright and early. I was able to get paper towels, toilet paper and disinfectant wipes! Still waiting for the lysol to come in because mama needs some more but in due time... can't seem to find any anywhere :( The staff was the bomb.com, they were awesome. I was ear hustling and one of the staff made me smile with how happy he was even during these uncertain crazy times. I heard him say "GOOD MORNING SUNSHINE" to what appeared to be regulars and that just made me smile. He stopped what he was doing to talk to the couple and just to hear his positivity was Refreshing. In addition, The cashier that rang me up was extremely nice and pleasant. Got me a second cart when my one cart was full. Then another staff member helped me bring my second cart out to my car. Everything about today made me so happy! Sometimes it's small moments like this that make me smile. So thank you to the staff at Rhinebeck's tops for making today a less stressful, more enjoyable experience. It is truly appreciated. read more

The operations manager banned me from the store after a simple mistake at the self check out. Come to find out she purposely checked the video feed 30 minutes after she saw I made a mistake - but since I had left the store she turned it into my problem. Sounds like discrimination to me. They do not follow CDC or NYS Health dept guidelines. Management says they are free to do what they want concerning Covid safety. It is obvious they do not care about customers. The assistant manager wears a face mask with a relief valve, and does not care that it does not stop air borne Covid. The produce stock person with his nose not covered. Not a problem according to management. I wonder if anyone in the back storage area wears a mask at all. I am sure it would not be a problem with management as they do not think the rules apply to them. read more

Just a tip if you shop here, always check expiration dates! I notice this place consistently has items that are well past expiration dates on the shelves or they are nearing them in a couple days. I found a loaf a bread a week or so ago that was roughly three weeks outdated, yes that is correct three weeks! My husband went to buy yogurts the other day and noticed that some of them were 5 days past expiration. I have had to return items in past because I did not check the expiration date only to see its expired the following day. I think its disgusting that they try to sell their customers expired food. I still miss Stop and Shop it was so much better than this. Also the deli is typically awful. We dont even bother ordering meats from here anymore. The meats are either way too thin to the point that they literally fall apart when you try to take it out of package or they are super thick. Its like honestly no training goes to staff as to how to properly cut meat. read more

We went to tops last Friday, March 13th to get some items for dinner. We weren't prepared for the amount of crowds during this Coronavirus emergency and the amount of food people were getting. I told my husband that if it takes to long, we'll put our items back and go home. However, Tops was prepared. All the registers were full and many had baggers and even the cashier asked how I was, which I responded " how are you". We were out of there pretty quickly considering. Add no Smuckers Natural jelly to the list of products Tops doesn't have. The list from the previous reviews and this says this can't be my primary grocery store. Revenue lost due to me going someplace else about $475 so far this month. I am actually paying more for some stuff but the Tops selection and shopping experience just isn't good enough. It's a shame their chicken and Italian bread was good. Really need them to be better. You would think they would have a booth or table to tell them what products they need to sell. Stop and Shop was bearable but Tops Friendly is neither. What a joke! We live in the Hudson Valley, an area known for its fresh produce and top notch cuisine. And what do we get? A second rate market based in Buffalo. If we're going to import something from Western New York, why couldn't it be Wegmans? I ordered through Instacart because I am home sick. I received a bag of moldy carrots. I called the store and spoke to a customer service rep who was one of the rudest people I have ever experienced. He said I needed to call instacart. I said I bought the carrots from him. He was not willing to help even after I said he better go check his stock, because there is moldy food there. Two months after Tops settled in to their new take-over, I went to shop. I gotta say, this is pretty dismal. Shelves devoid of the regular brands, replaced by Tops own lowpriced brand. Very few choices. The organic section of fruits and vegetables "looks" nice and clean but the apples I picked tasted like cardboard, lasted one day before they showed their age, the avocados were completely over-ripe, and the tomatillos were miniature and almost black. In the meat dept.there was NO skirt steak (and unbelievably, they no plans to ever carry that cut of meat). And in the baked goods department....plenty of doughnuts, cupcakes, and sticky buns but not a a single french baguette, or jewish rye to be had. That was enough for me. Unless you're looking for sliced Olive Loaf or brick of Velveeta at midnight, it's worth the drive to Adams in Kingston, or the Rhinebeck health food store. Hey, Tops....great way to embrace your new customers. No wonder your parking lot is empty. I'll give them 18 months before the shutter the doors. read more

When you walk in the front door and the first aroma that hits you (every visit) is the fish department, then you you know there is a problem back there approximately 250 feet away. It's actually Trimethylamine oxide............the odor that seafood gives off when it's freshness has peaked, "to be kind". Once you get near the seafood counter you can see how poorly the fish is treated and always glazed, yellow tinted and old. That's probably why in 20 visits I have never seen anyone buy fish here. For those not sure what I am saying.....simply stated there shouldn't be any unpleasant odors and only a fresh briny aroma at a fresh fish counter where they have pride and show knowledge about their product and their sales will reflect their expertise. Most of the other departments a quite good, specifically the market department featuring high end products from Murray's chickens to Dartagnan's fresh game and Coleman's lamb and beef. Employees attitudes can be hit or miss on each visit and it seems that on each visit there is always an item that doesn't scan at the checkout and that gets old very soon. The generous barely 2 out of 5 stars could be higher if the company's decision makers read this review. Many people like myself only shop here for convenience but when they have more time will travel to Hanafords in Red Hook, Stop n Shop in Hyde Park or the supermarkets in Kingston. I hope this is helpful and some changes happen for the better. It's all up to you folks, we have choices. My suggestion.....check you seafood sales for yourselves.........poor ??? read more

Prices are sky high compared to wegmans and even target fruits and vegetables are bruised and days old. Honestly I don't know how they stay in business. I only go there when im already in that location and I'm to lazy to drive somewhere else. They will more than likely go belly up like P&C did twice. Well, Tops in Rhinebeck gets my vote for most improved. They have really worked on getting the merchandise upgraded and now I find lots of premium brands and organics. Their rotisserie chickens are larger and more moist than Hannaford's, and I've found service very helpful. The Starbucks location now takes Starbuck's cards and gives you your stars. I had stopped using the store soon after it opened but on recent return visits have been pleasantly surprised. Give it another try! read more

Decided to give Tops a chance since we love closer to it than Hannaford...but both times I went, I bought outdated goods! Of course I didn't realize it til I was all the way home. First were carrots that when opened were all dried out and a week out of date. Tonight, was a purchase of a $4 coconut milk yogurt which turned out to be 2 months out of date! Absolutely unacceptable. When I attempted to return the first item, I did not even get so much as an apology. They honestly could care less...so I am not even going to bother to return the yogurt because they do not care or have pride in what they sell. Needless to say, I am done shopping at Tops. read more

I gave this new grocery store a chance after mourning the closing of the Stop & Shop. After 4 visits, I will now stop shopping there. I will travel longer to the Stop & shop in Hyde Park and cross the River to the wonderful Adams in Kingston. The store is beyond awful, it seems dirty to me, too many Tops products that I don't know anything about, an overall cheap feel is how it appears again to me. And when I asked a clerk why there is a sign about recruitment when so many Stop & Shop employees still seem to be working there she said because many of us have quit or are quitting. We don't like the management and all its rules. So now I understand why a friend in buffalo said he disliked the store and only went to Wegmans. I wrote to Wegmans and tried to get it to open here, tried to get an Adams here, oh well. A grocery store matters to me and many others in the 'hood because we cook, love our farm-to-table atmosphere. Get your act together Tops, you should be impressing us, not depressing us! read more

After the abrupt change from Stop and Shop to Tops I gave the store two chances. My overall impression upon entering was that the store presentation didn't feel as nice as the Stop and Shop - not as much selection and what seemed like empty shelves. I tried to buy good quality Parmesan cheese - the Stop and Shop had a stand with a freshly cut wheel of reggiano. No go. Only two dried up pieces in the cheese case. Went over to get some Poland Springs water. Not available in the size I used to buy. Checked out some other favorite products and eventually most were not there. Had to leave my partially filled cart in the middle of the store and head over to Hanafords in Red Hook. Such a shame. We had a really nice modern store with a wide variety, nice presentation, friendly staff and fresh produce. Doesn't seem like this place is heading in that direction. The area desperately needs a high end market. This isn't it. read more
