I think this is my new favorite grocery store, and I'm wicked bummed that we don't have Tops Friendly Market in the greater Boston area! I was initially skeptical about this place, considering it looks like it was made from the shell of a disgraced Hannaford's supermarket. While that may be true, I stepped inside and was immediately impressed. Not only does this store have aisles upon aisles of fresh produce, unique frozen goods that I've never seen on New England shelves (Blake's Sweet Potato Turkey Pot Pie, anyone?), and about a hundred different varieties of craft beers (!!!), but also a fabulously designed layout with creative and theatrical facades for each section that would put Wannado City to shame! I especially loved the seafood section's, which was reminiscent of my Rhode Island roots. Love it! Even though I visited Tops Friendly Market for the first time today, it's definitely not gonna be the last. If you've followed my Yelp reviews, you'll know that I LOVE a good grocery store, and this one's open all night! All the better for those late night Halo Top cravings. 10/10! read more

DO NOT SHOP HERE!!!! EVERYTHING EXPIRED!! spent hundreds of dollars on "fresh" groceries and had to throw over half of it away!!! The pierogies literally have black mold everywhere (opened them 2 days after buying from store). My bag of apples were so badly bruised and threw all away. My bag of lemons also moldy. Deli meat expired. In store made stuffed shells or also bad (sold to me 5 days after the posted sell-by date). There is nothing I trust eating from this store, and you shouldn't trust anything either. This management should be ashamed of themselves. I have small children in my house and they would have gotten severely sick if they even touched those horrendous pierogies. DO BETTER TOPS!!!! read more

Friendly staff, good selection, easy to navigate, lotto machines, great drink selection. Fine market, great staff at help desk.

We decided to take a ride from Orange County to tops. Very expensive. At the fish market a very indecent woman named Carmen came on to me in front of my husband. She had no respect to me. My husband was upset. She's lucky he didn't react. Very low class person read more

Very unprofessional people there. Gabby one of the cashiers decided on her night off she was gonna sit and wait in the parking lot and come after me & my son because she wanted to say things that were untrue and I corrected her to watch who she was speaking too. Now she played innocent of course. Managers all unprofessional too, they never stay to help customers, mind you they always seem to hide. But can you hire people with some respect? And doesn't matter if it's your night off or day off why are employees sitting in the parking lot drinking and smoking weed ? read more

Expensive and the employees are rude to boot - most of them. Needed a price check when the sale price didnt come up at the register. I had some stubborn space cadet take me on a tour of the entire supermarket because she refused to listen to me about where I got the item from. She just kept acting like no one was talking to her. That was after some pink-haired zombie with piercings and tats all over her (his??... I honestly couldn't tell) whole body blow me.off. Man, there is NO reason to waste your time or money there. Tops "Friendly Supermarket"? Yeah, right. Go to ShopRite. read more

For the most part. I like the store, it's quiet, easy to navigate, clean, Fully stocked. The banana selection sucks, always unripe green bananas. More fruit options would be nice. There's a person at the self checkout with like green hair fading out to black she looks so unprofessional and you can't even tell they are an employee. Looks like they just rolled out of bed. Needed assistance at a register because the cashier needed help and the green hair chick was rude and not nice. There's many others that work there as well that need to dress more professional and stay off their cell phones at the register!!! read more

Tops Supermarket is huge and a good place to go for groceries or to pick up something you need at the supermarket. Big parking lot and as you walk in, don't forget your shopping cart or basket. They have flowers too in case you need and small flower pots. All the aisles are labeled so easy to find where you need to go. If one likes going u and down each aisle, could end up buying more than you plan to. Don't forget to stop by the bakery for fresh bread, cakes, pies and pastries. Organic products as well. Wasn't too crowded for a Saturday and the Checkout lines were pretty quick. There is also self check out too. Perhaps not as busy as we came close to dinner time which is good so one can get done quickly! . read more

Store isn't clean. When you walk inside there is a smell of mildew and possible water under the carpets. The lobby where the carts, and bottle deposits are smells wet and filthy. It should be carpet cleaned. There may be mold under the carpeting . Employees should call and report this so there is a mold check by a third party. Once fully inside things are better, but the staff isnt that nice. I said hi to someone and looked at them right in the eye and they didn't even respond to me saying hi to them. she had a scan gun, maybe she was busy with inventory, but I'm just saying hi. I say hi to people everywhere I go though. read more

I do all my grocery shopping here. The prices are a bit expensive, but most things are nowadays. Love the bonus plus card and getting gas points, they have everything I need and if you look hard enough you can find some great deals read more

This supermarket is gorgeousssssss. They have everything for every holiday/get together. The building is huge with a nice open layout so you can maneuver easily even with a ton of customers. The prices are pretty fair and there were tons of sales. The bakery section and meat section were unbelievable! In the meat section there was even one cooler that had a huge variety of meat and chicken and everything there was 5 for $20.00. I never saw that before. For $20 bucks I was able to stock the freezer for weeks! And then to top it off, there were 2 staff members up in front that were so sweet and helpful. Tops was having some unique sales and customer loyalty games going on and they took the time to explain everything and maximize our savings on our groceries without us even approaching them. For the life of me I can't remember their names to properly thank them, but one of the girls had green hair. If you see her, you should definitely ask her for assistance if you need it. Overall this grocery store is about half an hour from my house but will be my new market for Sunday shopping no matter the distance. read more

I love this store. It contains EVERYTHING! Whenever I'm upstate, I always buy my products from there. They have organic products as well. I get my beers from there. They have delicious pies and cakes I definitely recommend it...!!! read more

Hands down one of the nicest supermarkets I've been to in a while. The store was SO clean and everything was organized so beautifully. The produce, bakery & deli section had really unique items. We went right before Mother's Day weekend so they had beautiful Mother's Day cakes for 10.99. And a lot of them too! The prices are really reasonable. They had a meat deal for select items- 5 packages of meat for $20 (there was bacon, ham, chicken tenders. Chicken nuggets, steaks, porkchops) a lot of different options which was amazing! I love to find deals like that. It makes planning dinner for the weak so simple. I also loves that a lot of the meats were but 1 get the other free which is rare to find nowadays since the meat prices have sky rocketed. They have a fun game of monopoly going on right now so you have a chance to win coupons and even free items. We won a $10 gift card. The staff was SO friendly and took the time to explain how the game works & even lent us their store card to use for discounts since the desk was closed and we couldn't get our own. I really appreciated the customer service. I will 10000 percent be back and will gladly recommend this spot to multiple people! read more

Tops Friendly Market - the produce section of a grocery store - Grocery Near Me - Carmel, New York

See all

I must update my review! It's been a year since they have opened their doors in Carmel and pretty much they have renovated & updated A lot! It looks fantastic, so clean & roomy!! the carts are much lighter they have a soft feel to them we call em "The 2018 model shopping cart" You must understand with all the renovations and updates someone must pay for all of this. It's reflected in the pricing of the food & merchandise. ! Omg the prices are so expensive !! 1 case of soda (12 cans in a box for $ 7.00 )) When Tops originally took over prices were incredible. Obvious the renovations cost money but plz don't rob us with our eyes wide open !! Smh. Sales aren't the same. My advice be selective as to what you buy at. Tops. Shoprite is just around the corner! read more

This store has it all First off it is spotless- Employees cleaning and using sanitizer... Spaced out properly- Store management is absolutely wonderful I love that they carry so many items from Upstate NY! The woman in the deli was horrendous- I witnessed her berating a customer - over something she didn't feel like selling Ham or Roast Beef Well he was correct she didn't want to open and slice it! So rude One bad apple doesn't change things This is an amazing store and I pray it's around for the long haul read more

I first went to Tops in Grand Island, New York. They have everything! When I left Grand Island, I told my family I wanted to take the store with me. Imagine my surprise when we took a ride to Carmel, NY and here was a new Tops! I couldn't be more pleased! Your cashiers are great! The people on the floor are very pleasant and super friendly. It's worth the ride to shop there! read more

Supermarkets are tricky to review as there are so many moving parts. This review of Tops will speak directly to the staff. I have never been so enamored with a team as I have been with the employees of tops. I will start with Cynthia Cervoni, she is one of the front of house workers. Cynthia is a warm and wonderful individual with a zest for perfection and an overwhelmingly loving heart. She is a consummate professional and I have witnessed her navigate tense situations with grace. A true gem. Next I will speak to Brian Callahan - who, from my first time in the store met me with excitement and an eagerness to help. He was the ultimate team player through the pandemic working both in store and disinfecting the carts & surrounding areas. Gerilynn is who I am going to give accolades to next helped me in a way that I can't ever repay. My father had recently passed & I had a voicemail message saved from him on my phone. I lost the phone IN TOPS! She found it & it was immediately returned. read more

this is the worst market ever. food is spoiled and on the shelves. especially produce. not to mention the staff is 90% rude not caring or helpful. the assistant manager Marcial is especially the worst. unapproachable and spends all day flirting with the female staff. don't try to ask him for help because he will ignore you. IF THEY START A FIRERING PROCCESS HE SHOULD BE THE FIRST TO GO!! never again shopping there. read more

I don't live here. I thought Hannaford's was still here. I was in the area so I went in anyway. The small Foodtown near me in Croton has a bigger container of almonds than this huge store. The prices are ridiculous. I only bought a couple of things. I don't need the discount BECAUSE I NEVER SHOP HERE.......so if I tell the check out person "No", don't keep trying to force me to fill out the form. Is he working on commission? I SAID no. And while customers stand there and wait while the elderly woman in front of me with no conception of time fills it out he gets to stand there and do nothing. I wonder how often that happens? Smart huh? I did some googling and it looks like Tops bought out several different stores in the Hudson Valley. I hope they stay out of Croton. read more

Disgusting! I went to self check out with my 2 children- 11 & 2 year olds. The girl "working" the self scan was highly unprofessional. Looks like she hasn't brushed her hair in 2 months but, besides that, the way she was talking to another girl was disgusting. It made my 11 year old feel super uncomfortable. No one wants to hear what she does outside of work especially when it comes to her personal life. I found that talking about smoking weed & making inappropriate comments while "working" is super unprofessional & absolutely disgusting. Because of this incident- I really don't think that I will be returning. Highly unprofessional!!!! read more

I'm sorry this place is getting so many negative reviews. My experience here has been mostly positive. There's a great selection of produce. The store's configuration is a bit busy and took me a couple of visits to navigate, but the food is fresh and service is friendly. You will pay a little more here, but I am willing to do that simply because of the food's freshness and store's cleanliness. They even spray down the carts. Not always perfect, but definitely the best grocery store in the area. read more

THIS PLACE IS RIDICULOUS!!!!! They decided to "REINVENT THE WHEEL" and put in their own (I imagine) self check computer system to make check out FASTER!!!!!!????!!!!! UMMMMMM, hello corporate you do know that having the attendant come over to manually reset the machine after EVERY item we scan actually slows down progress right!!!!!!! I mean come on, we now have the capability to know there is water on Mars, but not SELF CHECK with a system you just HAD TO REDO to make it quicker actually work properly. Tops Corporate please PLEASE PLEASE call Hannaford Corporate & buy their old system from them!!!! Oh yes one more thing installing with a tape measure would be beneficial too geniuses. Maybe, just maybe measuring with a tape measure rather than (I guess) eyeing it up would allow room for a person to actually hold their credit card and slide it thru the machine without having to do hand gymnastics to make it work. Go down & try & self check out a few items & get back at me. Just have enough time to stand & wait for all the manual overrides though. read more

Recently moved to the area so Tops supermarket is near and convenient to my home the only reason why I've frequent them. They also have buy one get one free sales, but really the price that you're paying for one item is how much you'd pay elsewhere for two items, so it's not as much of a deal as they lead you to believe. A couple of times I purchased products from them such as raviolis for instance the following evening when I went to make them for dinner there was mold on them. Another occasion I purchased meatballs made by Tops and I found a hair in the meatballs. Overall quality of produce isn't good. read more

Just used the online shopping experience and I think I'm in love. It was easy to choose items (even sales/specials) and Tops kept me in the loop from the time I paid, to the name of my personal shopper, when items were exchanged, when food would be delivered and once it was on it's way. I don't think there is any other way to shop now. read more

Love shopping here they have great deals and the meat is pretty good quality. Just wish they had more people working the registers.

Don't get me wrong, I really miss Hannaford, (especially my butcher they had in-store!!), but this place definitely has some major selling points for me: -Their brand of "Grape Juice Drink" is insane. Like old school from a soda machine and somehow ice cold insane! -They carry multiple varieties of Wolf Chili and I'm pretty sure I'd sell my soul for the No Bean variety when I'm in need of massive comfort food! I'm sure there's more and will add as I come across it... read more

Dear Carmel Tops, You are a black hole where food goes to expire. Let's just stop this charade and bring back Hannaford already. I just finished re-packaging some organic chicken that I purchased at about 10am this morning. Why? I'll start at the beginning. As I made my way through the barren shelves, which looks like we are in a constant state of expecting a hurricane, I arrived at the meat section. It was slim pickings as far as chicken breasts go - 3 packages of organic chicken breasts. Only three. I get it, why put out more than that? It's not like anyone really goes grocery shopping on a Sunday morning, am I right? So with no other options, so I picked one up. Call me crazy, but my intention was to eat this for dinner tonight. But that all changed when I brought it home and opened up the package. I wondered if perhaps I purchased fish by mistake, but no - this was just very smelly, very slimy chicken that had gone bad. This isn't the first time you've ruined my dinner, Tops, or the first time I have to trek back to your store to return something I'd just purchased. Isn't there some kind of law about selling expired dairy products, by the way? You should check on that. Well, Tops, I guess dinner is off tonight. I may never be able to forget that smell or that slimy texture. You ruined chicken forever, and I am now a vegetarian. Sincerely yours until I find somewhere else to grocery shop, Christine read more

You would think that the night operations manager would know how to bag groceries, but you would be wrong. I'm still trying to understand why she would put raw meat in the same bag with ready to eat fruits and vegetables... read more

What a shame Hannaford sold out to Topps. Topps has got to be one of if not the worst food markets I've ever been in . Where do I begin? 1) Under stocked shelves 2) Poor selection 3) Organic section is a joke 4) The worst of all is their dairy products, etc milk is constantly be offered for sale out of date. By as much as five days. This has happened three times in this last month. Sad read more

I was a loyal Hannaford customer for years. I am not happy about the change over to Tops. The Hannaford employees I've gotten to know over the years told me that Tops was "committed" to keeping prices low because they "understood" the local market. Well, just one week in, and many prices are not only creeping up, they're leaping up. Let's talk about some of the staples on my weekly grocery list. The regular price of Thomas' English muffins more than doubled. Store brand organic milk went up 50 cents for a half gallon if it's not on sale. Organic salad, a dollar more per container. Not only did a gallon of spring water go up in price by 29%, if you google the source of the Tops brand spring water, you'll see that it comes from a location in western New York that was found to be contaminated with carcinogens a few years back. Yum. Ripping us off AND giving us cancer. I understand that because of the Hannaford/Stop & Shop merger, some overlapping stores had to be sold, but there is no Stop & Shop in Carmel nor in any of the contiguous towns. The proposed Stop & Shop in Mahopac is a pipe dream--Key Food still sits open in that location and will probably remain there for a long time. So why was the Carmel Hannaford sold, and why did it have to go to this chain that has a horrible reputation in western New York for being expensive, dirty and almost completely lacking in customer service? (Just google "yelp" and "Tops Friendly" and pick any town. You'll be horrified.) Now I have to drive to Pawling to the much smaller Hannaford there. Unhappy is an understatement. read more

They've recently changed over from Hannaford and the change was not good. Not only is the staff unhappy with the crew that Tops brought in (which is incompetent at best), the prices of fruit are nearly double and they are encouraging the use of a Tops card so the prices can go up even higher. Take your business to the Shoprite or the Hannaford in Pawling. I was a regular shopper at the Putnam Plaza Hannaford and after one visit to this Tops I'm never going back. read more

Stay away. Unstocked shelves, missing basics, help that has clearly not been trained. My 83 year old mother was carded and the cashier examined her license like she was looking at the Rosetta Stone. If I didn't know better it looks like a money laundering operation. Horrible. read more

Open 24 hours! Really friendly people. The store has a great cheese and produce section. The seafood is excellent and has a nice variety. The only down side I find is the deli. They don't have Boar's Head and I didn't love the brand they carry. Otherwise I'm very satisfied and will continue to shop there. read more

Brown, goopy, rotten lettuce. Not just one stray package...ALL of them. If they neglect the produce to the point of it becoming rotten soup, what are they doing (or not doing ) with the rest of the food. Gross. Not ever going back. read more

I have been shopping here for months now, and I love it! So many of the staff 24/7 are extremely friendly and helpful. Their bonus club card doesn't take very long to sign up, and when you do your gas points towards gas gift cards at select gas stations but if you keep an eye on the flyer and use your manufacturers coupons, those gas points add up real quick. They have merchandise that other stores in the area don't have, whereas yes the prices can be a little higher than other places... The sales are really great! Like when shopping at any brothers else you have to be careful what you bye. On perishable items you should always check the dates and that goes for any store you shop in. read more

Very good selection and one of my favorite places top go to. Reasonably good organic produce.

It's 9:30 pm and I'm about to go to the register with 30+ items and none of the registers were working. They tell me self check out only, naturally I made a face "seriously" I'm supposed to spend another 20 minutes doing it by myself after a long day of work?!? If I wanted to work at Tops I'd fill out the application. This never happened in Hannaford and sometimes I was shopping at 11pm after work. So finally some lady says shes back and will take me at register 14. Time to fill out customer survey. I can't get over the fact that to them that was ok, like "what do you want, use self check out with your 30+ items" lol how rude and unprofessional. read more

Ok so when Hannaford first closed and Tops was just starting, they sucked. Since then they have expanded and made the store 5-6 more aisles wide. They have a better selection than Hannafords and I haven't had to changed any product purchases because they're all the same. I mean, they have is Teri Hatcher meat. Hannaford didn't have that. I have had zero problems with Tops and I'm glad they took over. Maybe if people weren't so resistant to change, there would be better reviews. read more

I am very disappointed with the changeover from Hannaford's in Carmel to Tops. Many of the higher end products I relied on purchasing there through the years have disappeared from the shelves. It seems to me that the selection will be lower quality goods and produce, higher prices, and the addition of many Tops brand products. Promises have been made about improving the organic area, which had been quite good, and returning such things as Sockeye Salmon to the fish department, but it remains to be seen. Shoprite is now the better store in the area. read more

Tops has undergone a total upgrade/refurbishing of the whole store. There are more isles for health and beauty aids and the produce section looks more inviting. There are allot more 'Tops' items instead of other brand names so less selection. Having more isles does not make the store (just more isles to navigate to get what you need) and having less brands is not necessarily an advantage. What I don't like emphatically is that the meat (beef) I've purchased, though looks great, has consistently little if no flavor. This has been whether from the butcher's window or off the shelf. Price...I want meat that tastes good!!! This has not been dependent on how it is cooked. I like my meat medium rare which I find brings out the best flavor. I can buy other groceries anywhere, better prices. If you can't supply a tasty piece of beef, you've lost me. read more
