We compared it against the distilled water that we had and the results were appalling. Installation was scheduled and their technician Adam Marjason completed the installation in less than 2 hrs. He is organized, knowledgeable and communicated the instructions of the RO systems to us. He answered all our questions post installation and practically went through the dos and the don'ts of the system. I will update this review in an event of any issues (if any) and how it was handled. But until then, overall we have good experience right from the start.

I live in College Park, and I knew that my water (municipal water) was leaving gross scale on our…read morebathroom fixtures and was therefore hard water. I also noticed that our water smelled very heavily of chlorine. I wanted to hire a company to soften our water and install a reverse osmosis drinking water system, but I honestly didn't know where to start. Something like 20 years ago in a different state we had purchased a Culligan water softener system, so I started my quest to look into water softener companies by calling Culligan. I am a member of Costco, so I also called Costco's water treatment folks, who happen to be Carroll Water in my area (who sell EcoWater systems). Both the Culligan and the Carroll Water systems seemed nearly identical; both use electricity, have electric timers for their salt water washes that you have to pre-set and worry about re-setting if the electricity goes out, are rather large systems, etc. One was a bit more expensive than the other (it actually annoyed me to no end that EcoWater/Carroll Water/Costco have some kind of buy-a-water-system-get-a-HUGE-Costco-gift-card thing going on...just seems way too gimmicky). My father, an engineer with tons of patents, lives in another state and had purchased a Kinetico water softener system and loved it. He told me I really needed to try to find a Kinetico dealer in my area so I could take a look at them, also. So I found Mermaid Water. I was impressed that their system didn't use electricity and that the salt water backwash system kicked in because of usage and not because of electric programming. To me, this seemed much more efficient than having a system that just always backwashed on Sundays at 3 am or whatever. The Mermaid Water representative who came to my house initially (Ed Owens) was also very flexible about the installation process - far FAR more than the Culligan or Carroll Water folks. I also LOVED that the Kinetico system was so much smaller and had such a smaller footprint than the Culligan or EcoWater systems, for we were limited on space. Even though Kinetico/Mermaid was a bit more expensive than Culligan and Carroll Water, I chose them. I'm very glad I did, but I didn't really understand why until after I had the installation team come in with our new equipment. The Kinetico installation team was absolutely amazing. Truly. Brad King, the son of the owner, did the install, and he is absolutely a master plumber. No one could have done a better job. He came into my house, created phenomenal ways to get the job done while minimizing the footprint of the machines and maximizing the benefit to my house - I am so grateful to him. And as he did the install, I asked him a thousand questions and he was SO patient and answered them all. And it was during this time that I became much more educated about the equipment and so grateful that I had chosen to purchase it rather than anything else. For example, I watched while Brad set the clockwork discs/gears that tick down to when the softener enters a backwash cycle. Basically what happens is that as you use water, the machine slowly ticks down via a small clocklike gear until it's time to start a backwash cycle. Then one part of the machine backwashes while the other is still filtering your water. The cool thing is that the Kinetico equipment actually backwashes itself with treated water (the others don't), which lengthens the life of your equipment. And since only one side of the water softener (there are two sides - basically two water softener units that sit side by side) regenerates/backwashes at a time, the other side is always still filtering your water. Whereas with Culligan or EcoWater, their machines don't do this - the whole setup backwashes all at one time, leaving untreated water coming into your house. Also, because usage is measured via a mechanical clockwork gear and not an electrical panel in the Kinetico systems, there are less electrical parts that can fail in the future, and you don't need an electrical outlet nearby to plug the machines into (which made me happy - I didn't have to get an electrician out to run wiring for a new plug). The Kinetico system typically backwashes more frequently than the other systems, since it backwashes based on usage, leaving me to surmise that you could absolutely be put in a position with units that only do this based on timers where your system is gunky and needs to backwash but hasn't yet done so because the timer hasn't told it to. And the Kinetico system uses far, FAR less salt during backwashes, thus FAR less salt overall. I would much rather have equipment that backwashes when it knows it needs to based on its own usage than a system that backwashes once a week based on a timer. Their reverse osmosis system is also stellar; it has powerful water pressure - much better than other RO systems. We are THRILLED with our Kinetico equipment and THRILLED with Mermaid Water! The best brand of equipment out there.

He gave us a fair estimate based on the problem description and scheduled a visit immediately. True to his word, he quoted the exact cost when he arrived. During his first visit, Mark was thorough, answered every question, and explained everything clearly. He fixed half the issue on the spot and returned the next day to finish the job. Because the old valve was badly installed and the surrounding "box" cracked when it was removed, Mark went above and beyond. He replaced the whole box and the new valves, a service that would normally cost an extra$200, but he didn't charge us a cent for it. He tested everything before leaving, and when I mentioned our weak‑pressure shower, he instantly diagnosed the cause, explained what caused it, and showed me the issue, and fixed it at no additional cost. I also asked about the slow draining sink, and Mark handed me a tool to remove the debris and showed me how to access the clog. Again, this was free of charge. Mark assured us that Lyons' labor and parts come with a one‑year warranty and that the components used are built to last. In today's world, it's hard to trust someone you don't know, but Mark made us feel completely comfortable and at ease. We're thrilled with the service and will gladly refer Mark and Lyons to anyone needing plumbing or drainage help! We will no longer be looking for another plumber again.

Were assured we did not need an acid neutralizer with this water softener and that it would be evident because we would no longer see blue and discoloration in our sinks, showers and tubs. Never happened. In fact, the tank blew out within the warranty period. Screaming Eagle refused to honor the warranty even though we had made consistent calls for help when the system was not working properly, requesting them to check the settings and find out why it was requiring several bags of salt per month. Promised several times they would come out to the house but never showed. When the system finally blew we were told it was because the salt tank was empty when they arrived. It was several days afterwards and why would we add salt to a broken system? We also reminded them about our previous messages and calls regarding the system requiring excessive salt, but they didn't recall. Asked about the promised warranty and were told we had to call the manufacturer. Called the manufacturer who agreed to replace the tank with confirmation from Screaming Eagle, but that never happened and the warranty expired soon after. We spent $7000 on this system because we have two disabled and medically complex children, one on a feeding tube, and both in wheelchairs, and we wanted their drinking water to be safe. We had to mostly buy bottled water anyway, even when the system was working because of the overabundance of salt in the water. We also had to pay plumbers twice to dislodge the salt from our faucets twice, and our pipes were getting pinholes and leaking due to acidic water. Their response was "Don't recall that you requested an acid neutralizer." Really? Screaming Eagle did not contact the manufacturer to advocate for us and offered no further assistance. The warranty expired and we have a blown water softener sitting in our basement with no way to remove it as we are in our 70s and disabled.

Chirstian Lopez was subcontracted by the HVAC company we hired to run the condensate lines for the…read moresystem. He did extremely messy work, and ended up plumbing the condensate down an interior wall that then exited the wall to two 90 degree bends and down through the floor of our kitchen which was in the process of a remodel. When I questioned it, I was told there was not other way to do it. This was completed at 6pm at night on a Saturday and we just wanted them out of the house. We had our plumber come in a few days later to see if he could change it, as the way it was set up would affect our cabinet layout. No need to get the HVAC company involved, it would be a small fix. Our plumber would be able with ease to get more of the piping in the wall. Upon going under the house to fully look at and complete the job, our plumber discovered that the condensate lines were not run to code. Mr. Lopez had run our condensate incorrectly into the sewage lines, in our crawl space. Because our plumber was there and there were concerns of the way it was done, we had him fix it on the spot. We then went to the HVAC company and Mr. Lopez and explained what happened and asked that they cover the cost for the condensate line to be fixed. We did not include the cost of moving the lines in the kitchen floor, as we planned on just easting that cost. Long story short we went back and forth for 6 months of them arguing that without proof from an inspector that it is wrong they would not do anything. They did say that if an inspector came back saying it wasn't to code, they would be sure to reimburse us. I ended up going to our town hall and explain what had happened to the inspector and providing pictures of the work done wrong and pulled a permit. The inspector wrote a report showing the violations. We then presented that to HVAC company and Mr. Lopez. They still refuse to reimburse us, claiming I should have given Mr. Lopez the chance to fix it. I however, did not want him back working on stuff when he already did shotty work.
