I give it five stars because first of all it's clean, nice and neat, the TVs work it, it's a big room. The best part is, is that if you forgot your shampoo or body wash they have it in these containers on the wall in the shower and hand soap. And they have a coffee maker in the room! Considering the options in this area, this hotel is decent and fairly priced. The room was clean, with the exception of Chex cereal on the carpet in different areas leaving me to believe the vacuuming before us checking into the room was non-existent. The upholstered chairs in the room had stains on them, that's a bit of a turn-off. The bathroom was clean, just small with no places to hang either your hand towel or your shower towel. Paper thin walls in this place, made that much worse by the multitude of ATV and motorcycle folks staying in the rooms surrounding mine, who all convened in the parking lot (which is right outside all the rooms) to party it up every night. As it got later, they got drunker--and louder. I mention the vehicles they drove because they also revved their engines outside the room doors multiple times a day, moving their (very loud) vehicles in and out of parking stalls for no apparent reason. The Inn has an extra parking lot for trucks with ATV trailers, so this is apparently typical clientele. Which would have been nice to know ahead of time. The room was clean, the front desk staff was pleasant. Bed was fine, shower water pressure and temp were good. Will not be returning and do not recommend for the average traveler. read more

Absolute jem. Top Notch is top shelf all around. From a extremely friendly front desk staff to a beyond clean room. This inn didn't disappoint. Room was perfect and looked like it was renovated the day before we came. I liked the push dispenser soap instead of the small little hotel bars of soap that you get everywhere else. This place is a hidden gem. The only reason that makes Sunday River affordable to ski is the price of their lodging. It's really clean, the beds are super comfortable, and the staff is really friendly. I specifically picked this hotel due to a good prior experience, but was disappointed this time. I booked though Expedia since the rate was ok and figured why not as I use the service from time to time. Well apparently due to this I did not get a room in the main hotel area and was placed in the HC accessible room. This is not what I wanted and the room was right next to a neighboring restaurant and we could hear traffic all night. Additionally the people upstairs stomped non stop. I booked far in advance to be here. If you don't want to treat those using Expedia the same as those booking other ways don't offer it. Room was clean. Bed was ok for me, but my husband didn't like it. It was very squeaky too which was annoying. They need to upgrade the towels. read more

We just stayed this weekend at Top Notch so we could take the kids to Santa's Village. We booked one of the houses that accommodates up to 10 - but were charged an additional 20 dollars per night per person that stayed in the house. We had 6 total. 2 of them were under 3. We still had to pay an additional fee for them - "if they are over 1 they can walk around and make a mess" per the front desk. All of the dishes and glasses were chipped. One glass even broke as I was drinking from it. The shower handle falls off when you turn the water on and the shower head is hanging out of the wall. Not to mention that my girls who I just had to pay an additional 80 dollars for the weekend to be in the 10 person house we stayed in were not offered stockings, cookies, or hot cocoa when we checked in like advertised. It was the lady the second night who came to check out the shower situation who asked if the girls got these things. It was her first day and she did better than the staff who had checked us in. read more

Do not book here. I have been a loyal patron here for over 2 years, staying multiple times a year - but I WILL NOT be staying here again. I have had multiple issues here before but always gave them a second chance because the people seemed nice, but today was the final straw. I had a reservation that I potentially had to cancel due to COVID. I was told that if I canceled then I would be out the entire cost of my stay, so I decided to keep the reservation. I was then called back and told that I was not allowed to keep my reservation and that I would receive a credit but not a refund. Since I was being refused to use my existing reservation, I asked if I could book another date - the only dates I am able to make work with the hotel's availability - and I was told yes, but that I would have to pay triple the amount I was currently paying due to a price difference in rates. The future dates are at a less popular/busy time so I asked if I could have my existing rates matched and was told no. I asked if I could be refunded my money so that I could go to another hotel where I could get a similar stay at a similar rate and I am still being refused my money back. I then asked to just keep my existing reservation and again was refused. They will not honor my existing reservation, but are also refusing to give me my money back. They will give me a credit that I am unable to use due to their lack of availability and also due to the ridiculous increase over the rate I paid, and their unwillingness to match my rate. I have also asked to speak with the manager but I am not being allowed to do that. I am out hundreds of dollars either way - I either lose all my money for the reservation they won't honor or I have to pay a few hundred dollars more to rebook since they won't match my rate or allow me to use my existing reservation. I absolutely will not be booking another stay here and will make sure no one I know books here either. Save yourself the headache and don't book here yourself. read more

Horrible Service!!! Owner calls me day if stating my card didnt process and they had to rerun my card. Akwardly you have to oay in full upon booking and its 100 percent non refundable.Well that wasnt true. Me and some buddies drove 5 hours there just to be greeted with an attitude. The top notch was a miserable place to stay. The maintenance guy came up to us the first night telling ushe was the owner and he wasn't going to out up with anything. He followed everyone, made a very uncomfortable setting, we had notes on our doors the third night with rules as if we were all children, we are all lost 40 or over. This is an older motel but don't let that discourage you from staying here. Our room was very clean. The motel has been maintained with TLC. This was evident. It appeared that the owners have put $ into maintaining the property. For example, there was a sign at the ice machine that asked that you use the ice bucket in the room to collect ice so that ice would not get on the floor. It looked like newer if not new carpet. The ice machine was located in the laundry area which was neat and tidy. Even though we did not use the pool or hot tub, from outside of the fence, it looked clean. My husband says the bed was very comfortable. He said the sheets were soft enough but I thought they could have been a little softer. The room was comfortable. There was a good size fridge, coffee maker, and microwave. There were also gas grills outside. We would stay here again. read more

We really enjoyed our stay at the Top Notch Inn. We had an "executive king" size room. It was snug with two of us, my dog, and our hiking gear, but workable. The rooms have been redecorated in recent years and it shows. And the price is right! It was very clean, quiet, and pleasant. I came here for a week getting out of NYC after being on lockdown. I'm familiar with the area and avoid the "other side" with its tourist crap. Gorham is sort of like a modern day deadwood, and I love it. The Top Notch is spotless to a degree I've not seen, particularly given the COVID outbreak. Rooms are meticulously cleaned, grounds spotless, pool the same. The staff is accommodating and super friendly. A sort of common area in the center of the property, grills, picnic tables, umbrellas and chairs if you want a cook up. It should be noted that a fine young gentleman (groundskeeper) cleans and sanitizes the grills and utensils everyday and ensures all is good. It's an ATV heaven, but quiet and laid back. Clean and great location. We stayed there for 5 nights in August. While it's definitely a "motel" it was very clean and quiet. Definitely enjoyed having our own mini fridge in the room. Beds were comfortable and room is fairly large. I wish they had more hooks in the bathroom for hanging towels and more hangers in open closet set-up. Also, would be nice to have a mat to wipe feet on so you don't track dirt straight into room. Towels could be better, they were rather thin. This was our first trip here. We were very happy the room was clean and a very good size for a family of 4. I liked having a table for the kids to eat at. I was a little nervous at first when we saw all of the ATVs in the parking lot. I was afraid it would be noisy. But we never heard a thing! There were people outside and music playing but once we were in our room it was quiet!! Perfect location for both Santa's Village and Story Land. Plenty of restaurants around to eat at. (Chains and locals). We first tried to stay at the Mt Madison but they didn't have the space for our stay. Because they are owned by the same people They helped us arrange for a room at Top Notch with just one phone call. We only had housekeeping come one day. I booked a room for one night here for a hiking trip. Something came up in my life and wondered if I'd have to cancel. I called to ask what the cancellation policy was in case a customer needed to cancel. They responded with "no refund after 48 hours prior to trip" - fine. So I decided to make the trip after realizing I wouldn't be able to get my money back. Upon checking in, staff member Kevin stated he "was under the impression that I canceled". Last time I checked, it's never really safe to make assumptions. Especially in this situation. So, my room was canceled and booked to someone else. They had no vacancy at my time of check-in... So the back and forth went on for some time. I'm thinking to myself, why would I drive 4 hours to a motel that I cancelled? It seems as though he misunderstood and made a mistake - afraid to get in trouble - and now I am unfortunately paying for his expensive mistake. Evidently, they do not like to admit their wrongs and in the end lose a customer over their mistakes instead of apologizing and making it right. Customers are not their highest priority. It seems that money is, after double dipping and giving my room away to book another customer meanwhile keeping my money for a room I did not cancel nor did I stay in - making double the $$. I asked two different staff members, one being the General Manager, if they could have the owner give me a call. Almost 3 months later, the owner still has never reached out. Instead, the staff claims they've contacted him and that he's given me one free night stay. But that doesn't help the fact that I've lost out on money that was not theirs to take, nor would I ever stay in this place again, free or not. They've been very uncooperative with me and my requests. I never wanted an issue. I simply just wanted my money back and for a personal phone call from the owner. Maybe he will finally reach out after reading my review. Is that what it takes to get a response? Regardless, there's no use now and I believe in karma. There are many great hotels in the area, please support a local business that has its customers best interest. read more

All in all the motel was decent. Obviously recently renovated. And that is the only reason I gave this place 2 stars. We are having a problem with a hold on our credit card for nights we did not stay there. When we initially called to check on the location of the motel and the distance to storyland, santas village and Clark's trading post we were told 10 minutes to storyland and half hr to Clark's. That was completely untrue. It was 1/2 hr to storyland and an hour to Clark's. When we arrived at the motel we discovered the discrepancy and decided to stay only one night instead of 3. We talked to the manger, Nancy, and she said it would not be a problem. And would refund our money for the remaining 2 nights. She explained that there was a hold on our credit card and it would be removed within 24hrs. As of today it has been one week since we left the motel. We are yet to get the hold released from our credit card. We have talked to the bank and the hotel. The bank said it is up to the hotel to pull the hold and the motel said its a bank issue. I tend to believe my bank, having been a customer of theirs for 3 yrs and never had a problem. I don't recommend this motel if you plan on going to the attractions in the area because its no where near them. read more
