There are many locations of Top Dog around UCB's campus and I've only been to two. One being at this location and the other being on Durant. The nice thing about the Center location is that it does have a little bit more space here than at the other location so if you actually want to stick around and eat, I would recommend going there. Also, they also accept credit cards for purchases $5 or more, so if you don't ever have cash in the wallet, Center would be the right location to go. However, the people that work at the Durant location are a hoot to sit and talk to, so I definitely would check that location out as well. I've tried a few different dogs at Top Dog and the one that I keep going back to eating would be the hot link. The hot link is the kind of spicy that the more you eat, the more spicy it gets. I've also tried the Bird Dog and the Linguica and I enjoyed both but they didn't compare to eating the Hot Link. I think the thing that makes Top Dog so good would be the roll that they use at the hot dog bun. It's like a french roll that is toasted, slightly sweet, and goes really well with the dog. Hot dog is $3, chips are $1, and a small soda is another $1. Very budget meals. One might not be enough for big eaters so I would recommend either getting a chili cheese dog or else doing 2 dogs. read more

I am not a fan of hot dogs, but TOP DOG is AWEEEESOMEE! good late night food. The dogs are cooked to order, so it is always pipping hot! Relatively good pricing for what you get. read more

We tried the Chicken Sausage w/ mango and habanero (believe that was the pepper) and the Garlic Sausage dog Both had a great snap, moist and a good amount of flavor. Finally, a non-SF review!!! Yay, I have a LIFE outside of the city! Being a Cal alum I KNOW the institution that is Top Dog. For years I had to resort to going to the teensy tiny counter on Durant Street, endured standing outside in the cold since there was nowhere to stand and I always went there after midnight, and practiced being apathetic to all the loonies that hang around Telegraph. But it was all worth it to have the best sausages ever (my personal favs: lemon chicken, smoked chicken apple, calabrese, top dog) With the opening of the Center Street location, that all changed! This place is so much roomier, with actual biased-cut counter eating space, and a real TV to watch. And now that I don't live in Berkeley anymore, it's less than a block from the downtown BART station. I make it my routine to always stop by Top Dog whenever I visit Berkeley. And it can get crowded on game days for sure. My recent visits saw a tall guy with long blond hair and a petite Asian girl working the best team: he would shout at the top of his lungs to get people to order and work the grill, and she would count up the totals at the cash register and handle the $$$. Never did I see they falter when the line got long or if people were shouting multiple orders at them. They always managed to keep the orders on track. Such efficiency and work ethic. If you're craving for late-night snack in Berkeley, Top Dog's your place. read more

Likes: Lemon chicken and smoked apple chicken top dogs are the best. Bun is toasted to a perfect crisp. Self-help yourselves to the condiments on the side. Dislikes: It saddens me to watch the price go up over the years. read more

Let's begin in 1988. I'm a freshman at Cal and living in the Unit 1 dorms. Though I'm living on the meal plan, sometimes late at night I get cravings that can't be satisfied by whatever I have in my teeny dorm fridge. So off I go to the Top Dog on Durant. The mean and surly guy behind the counter often regales customers with funny stories of his awful ex-wife. Cut to 2005: I find myself back in Berkeley on a regular basis, and a much younger guy is running the grill at the Center St. location. I stop going because, frankly, the guy is an asshat, and we nearly got into it once over my inability to say the entire name of the particular dog I want. Cut to 2007: I'm still in downtown Berkeley, and the asshat got fired a year or so ago. The successive grillers are much more amiable. I'm back to going there more regularly. The dogs, of course, have always been great. Bummer that they no longer have pickles, but some things aren't forever. read more

Best hot dogs I've ever haddd! I love the variety you can choose from and how it's cooked right when you order it so it's fresh. They toast the buns a bit, so you get some of that crispiness on the edge of your bun. I'm not much of a condiments person, so I can't really say much--but the mustard and ketchup selection is satisfying. =) FRANKFURTER: Typical-but-deliciously-untypical hot dog CHICKEN APPLE: My usual until recently. It's juicy, and you really don't taste much apple (in my opinion). The apple just fuses with the chicken and makes it taste a teeny tiny bit sweet. It has some bite to it too, which is awesome. Awesomely glorious. LEMON CHICKEN: Subtle flavor, not salty at all, very juicy and tasty. HOT LINK: Maybe my spicy tolerance has just gone up, but I didn't find this to be THAT spicy. It was good though and made my nose a little runny. Though, I prefer my hot dogs on the lighter side (I always feel kinda like a greasy blob after I eat this one). CALABRESE: Extremely mediocre and not at all spicy. Super disappointing. It made me bloated. BRATWURST: Decent; better than the calabrese, but I would have to say that it's on the bland side. KIELBASA: FREAKING DELICOUS!!! It ties with the chicken apple for me. Aside from the chicken dogs, this one is my favorite. Just the right flavor and saltiness, not too heavy, so savoringly satisfying. I want one right nowwwwwww. Warning: DO NOT GET THE APPLE JUICE. Unless you like drinking something that tastes like tree bark. Literally tree bark. No kidding. read more

I'm all about a place where you can get a whole lunch for under $5 (dog, chips and soda for $4.75). The hot dogs are delicious, the bread is delicious, and that spicy mustard almost made me pass out. There's not a whole of seating, but you really don't need a full-out dining room if you're a hot dog joint. Just grab and go. If you can find a tiny corner, take it and read all the interesting articles and literature posted around the walls. You really cannot go wrong here. A definite quick lunch stop. read more

This place should be like Starbucks, with one on every corner. Hot dogs have a bad reputation, but Top Dog makes bad taste so good. The place is a stones throw away from campus and the restaurant is about the size of a large bedroom. Top Dog offers between 10-15 different dogs with side dish options of potato salad and three-bean chili. I ordered the only vegetarian dog on the menu, which was conveniently called, "The Weenie." Taking no offense to the name of the dog, when I got the thing, I piled it mile high with condiments. The dog was encased with a perfectly toasted bun, and when I smelled the dog I knew I was in for a pleasurable experience. What an understatement! This thing was amazing. After a few bites, I had to slow down my chewing and concentrate on what I was eating. My taste buds have never felt this way before. You know when in the movies a father is given his baby for the first time and the look on his face makes time slow down around him and he focuses in on his newborn? I had that moment! Okay, maybe a slight exaggeration, but this thing was really good. For a moment there I questioned my nine years of dedication to vegetarianism because if "The Weenie," tasted this good, the others could be just as good or better. I recommend Top Dog to anyone with taste buds. If you are a student or not, somehow find three dollars and skip on over to Top Dog. These dogs will rock your world. read more

I have eaten here countless times, and always left satisfied. They have a great selection of sausages. I usually go for the Kielbasa or the Bockwurst. My little 2 year old likes the regular hotdog. I can get 2 dogs, chips and sodas for under $10. A bargain! There is a good selection of all of the hotdog staples, so my hotdog usually ends up looking like a double decker bus by the time I have finished loading it up with onions, mustard, pickles and sauerkraut. The only thing I can hold against this place is the fact that it really goes to great lengths to push its libertarian message by placing political posters, pamphlets and materials all over the shop. I don't agree with that brand of politics, but, hey, I get to spill a little mustard over some Republican from Iowa's face today, so it balances itself out. read more

Back in the day, I'd frequent the Durant location. But for some reason I tend to come to this one more since it opened up. Both locations rock. They still have the magic after all these years. I don't think I've ever had a bad experience. Gets a little cramped if there's a lot of people in line, but sometimes there's nothing better than eating a piping hot one while standing up and cubbyholed in a corner. Makes me appreciate it all the more. Usually pick up a pack of 25 frozen dogs and bring them down for BBQ's. What a treat. read more

When your mom gives you thumbs up on eating a weiner, you know you entered a whole new dimension of eats....the smoked apple sausage was awesome, the bits of apples were huge and the sesame bun was nicely toasty and hot. The server was rather gruff, especially when I asked how big the dogs were just cause I don't want to get too big a serving since I'm sick...dude kept repeating himself over and over like a broken record that all the dogs were the same size...I know it's the same size...you already told me but I'm asking about something else...don't treat me like the UC kids still roaming around...I'm not the type to take that kinda shite 'tude from anyone *glares with glinty eyes*...the extra star is only cause your food is actually good. Parking is crappy, but then you're near the campus so just drop your car off at the free 2 hour areas and truck on over. read more

After being full from a round of dinner elsewhere, my berkeley friends insisted we had to get top dog to go and to top off the experience. For what it is, this is a great place to pick up a quick meal. I think we had like 10 minutes to eat before the show we wanted to see was going to start. We inhaled a dog apiece, some potato salad and were good to go. I stuck with the regular (all beef) frankfurter but I was told the chicken apple was the bomb. That's next on the list, along with the lousiana hot links and brats. read more

If you ask Berkeley students or residents where you should eat, you inevitably get "Top Dog" as an answer. I go here once in awhile, and I like the fact that they have a bigger location, so you can actually sit down. I've only had the lemon chicken dog, but I really like it, though I'm not much of a hot dog aficionado. The one downside to Top Dog is the price. $3 for a hot dog is a bit too much :( read more

I love that I can grab a spicy cal or yummy birddog on the way to BART from campus! A hot dog with spicy mustard and a lemonade! What a treat for a quick bite! I have been eating these TOP DOGS since freshman year 1989 (one of the causes of the gaining of the freshman 10-15 lbs). And why I needed to lay off of them towards the end of my college career... but have since found myself craving one from time to time. What a great location to find myself once in a while seeing those sizzling dogs cookin' then savoring every juicy bite. Top Dog is as Berkeley as hippies, oski the bear, nobel prize winners, peoples park, and horrible losing Cal football teams with overpaid coaches who take solid in year by year replays of "the Play!" Top Dog is another place that I just love, not necessary because they are the best restaurant, but because they've decided to focus on one thing - making tasty hot dogs! And boy do they make a tasty hot dog! They have this giant griddle that has the magically ability to cook the hot dogs perfectly (crazy-hot inside, but only slightly crispy on the outside). They also toast the buns to give it that "Wow I wish I took the time to toast my own buns when I was cooking hot dogs but I don't and that's why I'm going to Top Dog" feel! They also have a wide variety (re: flavors/seasonings) of dogs you can get, if you want to get "wild and crazy" with your hot dog experience. As for the restaurant itself, it's quite small; perhaps only 2-3 tall tables (the kind you can just eat while standing up) and a small counter. They also have a few outside tables, if you wish to flaunt your delicious hot dog-ness to those walking by. Inside the atmosphere is quite "Berkeley-esq", in that it's got local art and political statements thrown haphazardly (yet artistically) about. Another great aspect of Top Dog, they are very inexpensive! Most of their hot dogs are within the $3.00 to $4.00 range (tax included). So, you can easily have a very filling meal for around $10.00, drink included. Speaking of drinks, I would be remiss in not mentioning the fresh apple juice they have - it is crazy! Keep in mind, there have been times I've gone in to get my "Dog n' Juice" and the apple juice has been sold out. So, if apple juice is going to be on your "try-it" list (and it should), go in early! I'm giving Top Dog 5 "Dog" stars, because when you want a hot dog, they serve the best. Their prices are very reasonable and the staff has always been friendly and efficient. read more

When in Berkeley...beat CAL football.LOL just kidding! But no really.... We came here for a football game and I was expecting mean sly comments followed with side eye remarks. the short: i'm not a huge fan of hot dogs but i'd go to this place again the long: i like the concept. you don't find many fast food hot dog places. it's a particular niche that i don't find myself eating at often so i was pleasantly surprised. the drawback is: with so many cool eating options around the berkeley area, i probably wouldn't think to come here. the food came out surprisingly fast and the dude behind the counter was super friendly. both of which i'm told are not part of a normal encounter at top dog. not many places to sit inside. i'd assume during the lunch rush you're better off taking it to go and eating somewhere else. i had the garlic frank and my lady had the calabrese, which is her favorite. i loved the flavor and snap that everyone talks about. and she loved hers with tons of mustard. i'm weird and can't stand mustard. all in all, i thought the dog was good, service was good, i'd recommend it. but the foodie in me wants to try everything else berkeley has to offer before coming back again. read more

So, I visited this small dog joint last year... I probably should have written a review then, so as to capture the sensory details of the crackling and juices. Now, if I recall correctly, there is no topping (my bad) this joint: the Bockwurst has a nice snap to it when you bite into it. The interior of the building is the quaint type you'll encounter along Durant Avenue, unique to Berkeley's college town, the one with age and character. I would describe it as a no-frills, more-substance-than-style enclosed hot dog stand (more than a restaurant, as it is cramped), but that is by no means a bad thing. The condiments are nice, but overall the quality of the sausage grilled atop the flat steel tabletop is the most amazing thing about the place. My memory of the place is quite fond; perhaps the crisp Berkeley air or the munchies contributed to the overall ambiance of the Top Dog experience, but there it is. Unlike the pretentious, cookie-cutter chain restaurants of Orange County, Top Dog truly stands out. The grillmen are expert, probably from decades of experience, and take their trade seriously. The food is rich in history, flavor, and texture; but cheap in price (a rare quality where I currently hail from---Irvine, I'm eyeballin' ye -_-). if I ever do visit Berkeley again, I will *most definitely* drop by Top Dog and post an updated review. :) read more

I'm not quite sure what the buzz was about. It was a hot dog. The bread was really nice, about 10x better than a regular hot dog bun, but the hot dog itself was maybe just a touch above average. Still, I think of a hot dog as a super-cheap ($1.00) item, so for $3.00 it should really blow me away, and it didn't do that. Also, I thought of it as a super-fast jump-in, grab-one, jump-out item and I waited ten minutes... so... yeah... a mixed bag, Top Dog... read more

Out of all the things I could do in Berkeley, my fave is getting a hot dog from Top Dog. I don't just love it, I crave it. Maybe it's the crisp snap when you bite into the casing, or the perfectly toasted bun your sausage of choice is enveloped in. Of course it could be the various political banter that is on the walls that entice me, feeding not just my stomach, but my mind as well. Naw, it's got to be the dog, griddled to yummy perfection. My go to place to fill my tummy for under $5. read more

Love this place. The hot links are my favorite. No nonsense hot dogs but many higher end choices. Tiny hole in the wall, you walk in, order, get your condiments, drinks, and walk out. Simple but perfect..... perfect place for a quick bite, especially if you're on a budget. read more

Top Dog is a great place to pick up a quick lunch or have a satisfying afternoon snack. The only time you don't want to go here is during the start of the high school lunch hour, because it gets pretty crowded. The hot dogs are really good. I either get the smoked chicken apple or the bratwurst. The smoked chicken apple is the perfect blend of savory and sweet, and the bratwurst is seasoned nicely. The roll that the hot dogs are served in is crisp and toasty. While it tastes better than a normal bun, it is a lot of bread and kind of throws off the hot dog to bun size ratio from what I believe is the optimum. My favorite condiment to get is the Russian River hot mustard. It adds a nice kick to any of the hot dogs. The prices are pretty cheap, although they did raise the price of a hot dog by $0.25 fairly recently. Overall, if you are near the Berkeley BART station at lunch time, this place is one of the best options. read more

I work in the Cal area and had time to kill before a basketball game, so I decided to grab dinner here on the way instead of paying insane prices for sub par food at the arena. I had not one, but two top dogs. Indulge me. grill-toasted sourdough bread and juicy juicy sausages are a winning combination. The past time I was here I ordered the Kielbasa and the bockwurst. Flavorful and just the right amount of spices. They've got tons of other sausages to choose from. Something for everyone. Do yourself a favor. If you're gonna go to top dog, then go big. I was doing myself a disservice by ordering a chicken dog the first two times. The lowdown and greasy items will give you more bang for your buck. read more

Any bratwurst/bockburst combination with whatever condiments you desire is a win. I do prefer the Top Dog on south side though, but simply because it has a bit more character. Top dog sure lives up to its name!! The best hotdog I have ever tasted in a very long time. Actually I don't remember when I had a hotdog as good as this place. The bread is toasted and the frank is grilled. At $4.75 which is called a doggie bag, comes with a bag of chips ( 4 to choose from if I remember correctly) and a small drink. What a deal!! If I live in Berkeley, I can have this every other day I am not kidding haha. Oh, and for $ 0.75 cents more, u can make that a chili dog, trust me you won't be sorry because it was a very good chili dog as well! I even order to go as a late night snack just in case.... I was going to give it a 5 star but the seating was not exactly comfortable and cleaniness could be improved. This place was less crowded when I was there during weekdays between 8:00 - 9:00 pm. P.S. They offer 3 different kinds of mustard. One of them was russian spicy mustard and it was HOT! read more

I don't think I've ever appreciated this Top Dog location until the one on Northside closed, and I was in need of a quick snack before hopping on BART late at night. I didn't have to wait for long for my delicious Chicken Apple to be cooked and please my stomach. I still think the original Top Dog on Durant is the best, but this Top Dog is still tasty. With shorter lines, and good quick tasty hot dogs, life's goooooood :) Tip: Top Dog is best enjoyed freshly cooked. I've tried buying back some frozen ones home and cooking them myself, but it's never the same. Let me start by saying that if you're looking to go to Top Dog for some brilliant out-of-this-world sausage experience, you might be disappointed. Don't get me wrong, the sausages are great but they are not what make Top Dog stand out. Myself, my other half, my parents & also my friends all like this joint so much because it is quick, made to order, & cheap. My personal favorite thing is the French bread roll. The boyfriend's personal favorite thing...the sausage casing. Yeah, I think that's weird too, but it makes sense. The crispiness of the sausage casing @ Top Dog makes it so that you always get a clean bit of bun & sausage. None of that tugging around nonsense. If you like hot dogs, you've got to give this place a go. There are several locations so no excuses! read more

The best hot dog I have ever had, the flavors and everything worked out very good. Honestly it is step up from a hot dog seller on the street, with a nice store front. Then again I was trying to get a quick lunch to go for work so I might have been hungry, but regardless this was still the best dog I have ever had and I have had many bland not so appetizing dogs in my life. The best part is that they cook it right in front of you, so I thoroughly like that as well. Have not found another place that makes such good dogs. read more

Ever since I moved from SF to Berkeley back in 2012, I have thoroughly enjoyed Top Dog. In SF I could never find a true hotdog establishment like this one. For the price and taste, the variety of hot dogs and sausages can't be matched. Keep in mind if you bring a debit/credit card, Top Dog (like a lot of places) has a minimum of I believe $10. Cash is preferable for that reason. The people there are very friendly and the service is fairly fast depending on the time of day. The dogs are good, the deal's good, but the Center St owner can be a jerk. My wife and I used to go there once sometimes even twice a week (good after working out). Never again. It was November. Freezing. It's 10pm, we were all shivering, my hands were so cold they hurt. The music was blasting unusually loud, which normally I don't care about, it's his place, his music, whatever. We sit down OUTSIDE as far away as possible. The windows were open so it was just as freezing inside the place as outside. Whatever. My friends and I tried to talk-- yet the music was so loud this was impossible except for yelling "what" three times. We try for several minutes and fail because of the owner's music. So finally I slide one of the the windows closed put some glass between us and the music so we could talk. The other window few feet from us was still wide open. The owner gets up, walks all the way over, and re-opens the window. And turns the music up. And if that wasn't enough, when I get up to get my Calabrese dog after that, it's burnt. Sometimes they're a little crispy and slightly black, whatever, this was way past that. It was over half black and like bark. My wife's too. Almost inedible, not by shi-shi Bay Area standards, but by any standards. I was too mad to argue at that point. I've never gone back. He cooks them all day for years, he knew he'd burned it. Yes, part of Top Dog is rebel "buck the system" attitude, but when the owner goes that far out of his way to annoy regular customers that were busy going out of their way for his precious lifestyle-- so much for that. read more

For someone who has zero Cal affiliation, I absolutely love this place. It's been more than 25 years since our late night post drinking runs took us to the Top Dog on Durant. It wasn't as much for the delicious dogs as it was for the event and the experience - watching the guy behind the counter remember the orders of all 20 people packed in at 2AM after the bars closed. I had an opportunity to be in Berkeley this week and I have had plans to make my way south to the Durant Top Dog. I was thrilled to find Top Dog as I walked up from BART to the campus. I immediately stopped and fulfilled my carving - a Bratwurst with onions and Hot Russian mustard. I've been all over the world and have still not found a sausage as good and satisfying. $3. Such a deal. I had unfiltered AJ for old times sake and went on my way - almost euphorically happy. I went on campus for a few hours, completed my meeting and headed back to BART - passing by Top Dog again. TWO Top Dogs in one day? Dare I? It may be forever before I get one again so I indulged in my 2nd favorite dog - the spicy Keilbasa, again with onions and Hot Russian mustard. Should the two dogs cause a heart attack at least I knew I had been in heaven... read more

As the name implies, one can purchase cylindrical rods of meat here, often referred to as "tube-steaks". This establishment focuses solely on tube-steaks, and thus there are a variety of different types to try. I found my order (bratwurst) to be tasty and filling. Nothing that changed my life or my perspective on role of intestine-encased food stuffs, but still very satisfying. This alone would have merited a 4 start rating in my mind. However, a few things hold me back from giving this establishment this sort of honors. 1 - The tables and counters were a bit on the dirty side. I think this is largely because they only give you a piece of wax paper with your item, and no plate, tray, or place mat was immediately available. So, if you stuff your bun to the max with relish, onions, and the like and you explode everywhere (like I did), that food shrapnel is going all over the table. 2 - I sort of expected that, for fast food hot dogs, the cheapest dog I could get would be $2 or $2.50. However, the lowest the prices went was $3. Now, most of the options were $3, so you can just order something a bit fancier and it's completely reasonable. However, considering how cheap regular old vanilla hot dogs are in general, I was kind of hoping for a lower floor for the prices. 3 - The music was a tad grating, though this might have been just bad luck and they normally have a string quartet playing there at most times for all I know. 4 - I found myself in need of washing my hands after consuming my consumable, but the establishment didn't have a bathroom. Top Dog shares a space w/ the adjacent Mexican restaurant, where I was able to find hygiene satisfaction...but his technically might have been an abuse of their washroom, as I didn't buy nothin' there. Double negative. All that aside, if you're looking for a cheap meal that fills you up and makes your mouth pretty happy, check Top Dog out. Just might wanna back a wet nap or two. read more
