I get this "Only in Kansas" newsletter by email and recently Toots Drive In was featured. We were going to pass right by Howard on our travels from Salina to Bella Vista, AR, so we planned a lunch stop. I'm glad we did. Howard is one of those Kansas towns that has seen better days. It's pretty dumpy. Toots is pretty dumpy too. It's just a squatty old building on a gravel lot with faded signs and a pretty neglected look to it. Inside there are tables to seat fifteen or so and a small counter with a cash register. Behind the cash register, the young woman didn't give much of a greeting and acted as if I should just know what I wanted. Well, I kind of did, but I still wanted to look at the menu on the wall. I ordered the pork tender sandwich and the big cheeseburger with onion rings and sweet potato fries to go--we had our dog with us and planned to eat at a picnic table around to the side. I asked if they could cut the sandwiches in half so my wife and I could share, but they didn't. Had to go back for a knife which was just and ancient table knife and had to promise to bring it back. The food was good but the flies outside were super-annoying so we didn't enjoy it as much as I hoped. Anyway, Toots was pretty much what I expected, a greasy little drive-in with classic greasy drive-in food. Pretty darn good. read more

An out in the middle of nowhere, old timey, drive-in type restaurant. Very nostalgic and unexpectedly cool. In addition to their drive-through, they have a modest amount of indoor seating. I had their fried pork tenderloin sandwich, which was a savory thing of beauty! Also had a side of fried onion rings. They had five different types of homemade pies, and I got a slice of sawdust pie to go (never heard of this type of pie before, but it was dang good!). read more

Road trip to eat a hamburger and pie. Nice drive on Hwy 99 to a unique place to eat. Lots of people arriving for dine in or take out. The hamburger was delicious and the cherry crisp was delicious and was served a large piece! read more

Food is good. Always had a good experience there until yesterday. Customer service non existent. Rude behavior. After 40 minutes waiting for two pieces of pie and getting nothing but bad behavior and excuses we got a refund and left. read more

Great stop on a road trip! Prices are great, service is fast and friendly. The burgers were yummy, as well as the grilled chicken sandwich and chicken fried steak sandwich. No frills, just a small, straight forward restaurant with good food and a place to stretch your legs. Stop on in and grab a slice of pie! read more

Our monthly dinner date with our friends took us to Toots Drive-in. This little drive in will definitely make the "Must Return" list! Cheeseburgers were fantastic, with grilled buns. The jalapeño poppers seemed to have extra creamy cream cheese. Some of the best I've had. Topped all of this off with what seemed like a quarter of a piece of homemade apple pie that pushed the meal over the top. The key lime pie ordered by our friends was also homemade and I was told I missed out not getting it! All the more reason to make the trip back! Don't let the lack of paint on the exterior of this building make you pass this little place up. It's worth a stop! read more

(If I'm taking a weekend ride on one my motorcycles...make that 100 miles) That's the value of opening Yelp and looking at the map feature to see where a good restaurant is that is on my route!! Good food, friendly staff. Cute place to go to off the beaten path in Kansas. We will be back next time we are out that way!

I've been going here for the past few years on my gravel backroad adventures. Great place with great burgers! And a FULL menu of all kinds of items. I can't say much about anything other than burgers, fries, tots and shakes, because that's all I ever order, but what I order is great. If I had one or two complaints it would be this: Put up a couple metal carports for shade out front with picnic tables AND a mic/speaker to call out the orders. LOL. Just sayin... read more

We traveled all the way from Oregon to KS just to take in the Hwy 99 Fabulous Finds yard sale weekend. We were looking for something zany and crazy to do and that truly fit the bill. Toots Drive-In was the last stop we made after 2 full days of following the Hwy 99 Fabulous Finds yard sales from NE to Howard, KS. We were treated with great food and top notch, old-fashioned customer service. I had failed to purchase a Fabulous Finds t-shirt through the weekend but when I mentioned that to the owner she graciously gave me one from her stash to commemorate our fabulous trip to KS. We will never pass Howard, KS again without making a stop for dinner at Toots Drive-In. read more

Went a few miles off the highway to get there late at night. Food was very good! Yummy seasoned curly fries (HUGE) portion, great burgers and grilled cheese was delicious with Texas toast bread. Worth it to visit an old classic. read more

I want to say good things about Toot's so I'll start with the best I can say. The burgers are great. Really, for a little greasy spoon burger joint, there's nothing quite like Toot's. Beyond that, well... things get a little rough. Yesterday, I stopped by Toot's with a variety of people - my wife, my son, a friend, and my mother-in-law - and the service was atrocious. Maybe it's what one should expect in a small town joint, but it's never been so horrendous before. Once our order was taken, we waited nearly half an hour for food to arrive. When it did, the "Curly Q" fries and onion rings were old, cold, and verging on stale. Before the burgers arrived, the server came out to inform us that the two Hickory burgers we ordered came with fries on top, and wondered if we still wanted the fries on the side. Thankfully we said yes, because it wasn't those burgers that came with fries on top, but the single "Queso" burger that did. If we had rejected fries for the two people who ordered the Hickory burgers, they wouldn't have had any at all. We'd ordered five burgers; only four arrived. Of those four, all of them were supposed to be the smaller size, but three ended up large. It took nearly ten minutes for the fifth burger to arrive, and at least two tables who ordered after that burger was ordered (its order was separate of the rest) were served in the interim. It used to be that when you ordered fries at Toot's, they'd cook them fresh. These were obviously mass-cooked a la McDonald's. Anyway, the burgers were good. That's the only thing that gets them their second star. Service was awful, and no apologies from the staff when I patiently and gently told them. read more

Great burgers, fries, tater tots and service. Cute little drive in next to the highway so we had to give it a try. Plentiful meat onions pickles and mustard on the burger just like we like it. Wished we'd had room for pie coz it looked delicious and huge slices. Maybe next time. read more

This place is awesome. We stopped here on a Sunday afternoon for an early dinner. Highly impressed. There was a table filled with locals, and lucky for us we could fit into a corner booth. Not too many tables inside this place, but it does call itself a drive-in. We ordered off the menu (also on their Facebook site for a preview). My oldest and I shared a Large Double Chili cheeseburger and it was MASSIVE. Amazing! The patty was 1/3 lb each, and there were 3 of them... so it was a pound of meat not including the cheese, chili and bun. And it was GOOOOD. It is worth saying again. It was GOOOOD. Epic even. Knife and fork worthy. Youngest got a chicken strip and a side of sweet potato fries. Fries were delicious. They have things like concession stand nachos, homemade pie, ice cream, etc. It's kind of a hodgepodge of items, but they're good. And a good place to stop on a great highway. There's a really great scrapyard/metal sculpture display in the lot right across the road from Toot's. Think a batman sculpture riding a bat-motorcycle, and a Snoopy whose head is made from a motorcycle gas tank on top of a metal dog house. It's a great place to walk around while waiting for the food to cook. read more

My sister, cousin and I have eaten there ever so many times and we use it as a meeting place to have lunch and visit. Everyone there is more than friendly and we've never had any food that wasn't extra good. It's just hard to decide exactly what to order because we've never been disappointed.
