We wandered in to take a break from a cold day while camping at the state park. The place was clean and well kept. The staff was incredibly friendly and service was great. Love this place! Located on a corner in the middle of town, Uncle Jack's is a throw back to a bygone era, replete with original painted tile on the ceilings and turn-of-the-century decor. Unfortunately this is the 3rd issue I've had with Uncle Jack's in the last 6 months. On the first occasion I was buying gift certificates for Christmas gifts, when they rang me up, they charged me tax on the certificates, I asked if that meant they would not charge the recipient tax, since the tax was already covered. I was first told they didn't know, then told yes they would be charged tax. I asked of it was legal to charge tax twice for merchandise and they became indignant. In the end, no tax was charged to me. The second time was in February, the restaurant is seat yourself and was about half full on this day, my husband sat and we waited and waited and waited. Several other parties came in and were being served. We tried to get one waitresses attention and she ran past, no one came back after 23 minutes we left and came to Joe's. We have since been back and had a good experience, but today we attempted to use a discount that Uncle Jack's sells on Restaurant.com which gives you 50% off, so if you spend 30.00 you get 15.00 off. This is a certificate you buy at a discounted rate. The certificate specifically has their business name, address and phone number on it. They refused to honor it and said they knew nothing about it and it must have been something the old owner did. I paid for my husband's iced tea and again we're at Joe's, because we always receive stellar service when we come here. Couldn't leave zero stars or I would. Brunch seriously was a notch below the "free" sub warmed breakfast you get at a holiday inn. McDonalds pancakes were seriously better. Butter was frozen and old lip stick was still on the coffee cup of Luke warm water flavored coffee. Biscuits and gravy were like cardboard- may have been - not sure. All served by a woman reeking of cigarettes and covered in dog hair. I take not pride in writing this as I had hopes of a good place to eat breakfast. Writing as an obligation to warn others. Stopped by for a late lunch as we were passing through town. Not great food but I've had worse. Burgers were dry and the Caesars salad was made with the wrong kind of lettuce and warm. The boneless wings in buffalo sauce was good and we all ended up eating those. The biggest issue I have is the fact that we were actually charged for lettuce and tomato for our burgers! (Small piece of lettuce and one slice of tomato) The table next to us was served a burger and on his plate was lettuce, tomato, onion and pickles. Our 3 burgers just came with pickles and onions. We asked for lettuce and tomatoes and the waitress did not tell us there was an up charge (cause who charges for that!?) The waitress was beyond less than attentive to us. I had to be in Independence Kansas for work last week and had time for dinner. The hotel recommended a couple restaurants that included Uncle Jack's. As I was leaving a guest came up and said they had recently eaten there and highly recommended them. As soon as I went in I was created by the staff and asked to be seated at the bar to read a book and grab dinner. The server at the bar was so kind and saw the book asking if I just wanted to relax a bit. I ordered fried mushrooms as the hotel guest said they were fantastic. The best fried mushrooms ever, no debate necessary. Not sure how they do it but please don't change. I spent 30 minutes just relaxing and reading while taking in the decor and layout of the restaurant. Love the lighting, and floor layout, guest have plenty of room and the acoustics were very pleasant. For dinner I ordered a steak, green beans and baked potato. Again, the service was fantastic, food fantastic, and the whole vibe of the restaurant was really pleasant. Had the owner come o er and thank me for dining with them, this was a nice touch and meant a lot. I am having yo head back to the region next week and will make it a point to stay in Independence and dine at Uncle Jack's, it was that good! read more

I have eaten here a couple of times. Spicy shrimp and pasta was good but not spicy at all the one time I had it. Have had the KC Strip a couple of times with mashed potatoes and green beans. Both times the food was great. Only draw back on food are the breadsticks. Taste like they are made from doughnut dough. Not bad just not great. They have GUINNESS on tap!! Extra bonus points for that! One Saturday night we were in there having a late dinner. Luckily we were done and just enjoying a beer and talking.... then a DJ started playing music..... loudly. I wasn't expecting much, but was hungry when I found Uncle Jack's. I was pleasantly surprised! I was in town for the first time to watch a football game. They have several beer choices and more TV's. The menu is larger than I anticipated and had the standard bar and grill fare. I am a sucker for calamari and was pleased to see it listed on the appetizer list. But, this is Kansas you may be thinking. I ordered it anyway. It was very good. Spicy and not over cooked. The serving proportion was appropriate. My wife likes chicken fried steak. She wasn't expecting much but, it turned out to be very good! The staff was friendly, the food very good, and the drinks were as expected. However, only four stars because the wait time between ordering and getting served was long. I recommend Uncle Jack's if you have time to linger! read more

They had live acoustic music playing and it wasn't very loud, it was at a great volume. Plenty of seating and huge menu. The dessert choices were small... only 3 to choose from. My friends and I stopped in at Uncle Jack's on a Friday night while visiting Independence. The place was packed with locals, but we managed to get a table for dinner after only a short wait. The staff was very friendly and accommodating and the owner came over to our table and talked us through the menu highlights. We had a great time! There was a terrific musician playing live music. The owner told us that they have karaoke on Saturday nights from 9pm - 2am. We might have to check that out! read more

We took our grandfather (a local) here for dinner and we had a great time. The staff recgonized him as a local and greated him like he was a long lost relative (so nice). There is a community vibe to this place. The draft beer list was amazing - lots of local choices, plus some Texas beer. I had the chicken philly cheese sandwich, which I highly recommend. I added a side of cajun fries, which was a little disapointing. They are large cut potatoes with some pepper on them. It wasn't spicy for me, and I could be "kicked up a knotch". Grandpa had the catfish special and boy did he love it. Overall great service, great location, great selection of food and beer, easy street parking. My only complaint is that it can be a little pricey at times, but for what you get it is worth it. The food is exceptional! The special on Friday nights is a 12oz sirloin with choice of side and salad for $14.99, I believe. The service is very good and the staff is friendly. You can enjoy live music on Friday and Saturday starting at 6. The menu has bar food with a few more upscale twists. The burgers are HUGE and are tough to beat. It can be busy at times but you will usually get in right away! If you're looking for a good night out I would highly recommend Uncle Jack's. read more
