Most places have an owner or manager to help during the busiest times: ring people up, clean off tables when none are available, etc. The Eldon school mascot is the Mustangs, so Mustang grill is an obvious choice, but they have used a Mustang car theme instead. The old school diner decor is cute, welcoming, and not too overdone. The place is also clean and new-looking, except for a couple of tables which had not been turned over yet when we arrived. Who knew Thursday lunch was so crazy in Eldon? I ordered the meatloaf special. Meatloaf was ok, but nowhere near as good as my mom makes. Mashed potatoes had the peels still on and were just less than ok, but the brown gravy was either powdered or out of a can, giving the mp-gravy combo that "cafeteria" taste. The nice waitress let me substitute deviled eggs for the green beans that normally come with the special, which I was happy about. You rarely see those on a menu, and they were good! Son got a burger and mashed potatoes. Loved the burger and griped about the mashed potatoes through the whole meal. He also kept going to the counter to get soda refills for himself and hub, since the lone waitress was running her legs off and the taller waitress was busy chatting and hanging out there. Hub got the tenderloin and plain chips, which they do in house. The tenderloin was the whole reason we came--he loves them there! He also got a basket of green bean fries for the table but ate all but about 10 of them. They come with a side of ranch dressing that is pretty good (for bottled.) From where I was sitting, I could see the waitress preparing root beer floats for another table. They looked delicious. She also inflated a balloon to give to a little kid. I'm sure that little kid was tickled pink to get that balloon at the end of her meal. Our food came out nice and quick for as busy as they were, and I had plenty to eat with just my slab of meatloaf and eggs. By the time we left, every table in the main room was full or full of dirty dishes and unrelated parties were sitting at opposite ends of large tables. Per the owner, they do not accept restaurant.com gift certificates, although they have been for sale on that website for months and the owner is aware of that. There is no sign on the door or near the register alerting customers to that fact, either. There aren't that many places to eat in Eldon. The ones that have closed in the last few years have closed for a reason. It's a nice little place for Eldon to have for the locals to eat.

Usually at an upscale casual restaurant like this, the portions tend to be on the smaller side. Not here. You had to roll us out! Richard, our waiter, was amazing, and the rest of the staff was so nice and attentive. I've been saying for years that the food scene around the lake is a little disappointing. You can get pretty burnt out on all the restaurants serving similar foods that start to taste the same. 1932 Reserve is such a refreshing change. It's a great place for a special occasion, a date night, or just when you want a really delicious meal at a nice restaurant and you're tired of the typical restaurants around the lake. The one negative would be the parking, but it seems like they have a golf cart running people back and forth, which definitely helps. The Reserve has absolutely proven that they deserve a place at the lake, and I really hope they're successful for many years to come. The food and experience was truly great. It's the kind of restaurant you might expect to find in a big city, and I'm so glad it's here.

Experiences have always had up-and-down moments, but this time was disappointing because I really wanted it to be great. It just wasn't. The Good: The restaurant itself is gorgeous, and the waterfront ambiance is spot on. It's clearly the place to be at the lake--so good job on the venue. The Service & Atmosphere: Service was adequate, but far from fine dining. If you're charging premium prices, the service model needs to match. Having random runners drop food at the table without knowing who ordered what is diner or casual Mexican restaurant service, not an elegant dining experience. The new manager stopped by twice--a nice touch, until we actually provided constructive feedback. Instead of offering a remedy, he offered excuses about being new and didn't handle criticism well. The Food: Apps (Deviled Eggs & Tuna): Both looked like they'd been plated earlier in the day--they had an unappetizing "sheen" to them that made them look leftover rather than fresh. The flavor on the eggs was completely muted, and the tuna was equally lusterless. Salads: We split the Caesar, and our friends had the wedge. They were served without any offer of fresh pepper. When we flagged down a staff member, they brought out cheap grocery-store salt and pepper grinders. Later, we were told the new chef prefers not to offer pepper on the table. With all due respect to the chef: that's the guest's choice, not yours. (Side note: the wedge was tasty, but oddly wasn't actually cut into a wedge). Mains: The ladies had the Sea Bass--the dish that originally put this place on the map. It was okay, but not as good as it used to be; the new Asian flair and bowl presentation take away from what used to make it the star of the show. The pork chop was good and thoroughly enjoyed. My lasagna had a great portion size and good base flavor, but it was dry as jerky with practically zero sauce. The Verdict: The restaurant will continue to thrive simply because of its location and the lack of competing fine-dining options on the water. But when you're dropping $500 on dinner, you expect accountability and an outstanding meal. We won't be back anytime soon.
