This is a very casual, and relaxed place which has a variety of Dutch food on their menu. Service was top notch. Both the bartender and waiter were friendly and welcoming. They answered all our questions about the menu options/ daily specials and got our orders in very quickly. We ordered a bottle of red wine to split for a table of four which was a perfect portion. For food we tried: Stamppot: traditional Dutch dish that has mashed potatoes and sauerkraut topped with sausage. This was delicious! It was highly recommended by the bartender and I'm glad we listened to her suggestion. The mashed potatoes and sauerkraut combination is divine since it's like mashed potatoes with a little extra texture and a mildly pickled taste. The sausage was very good as well. Really flavorful without being too salty. This was my first time trying this dish so I don't have an established baseline but I thought this was a very hearty, delicious and comforting dish. Steak with mushrooms: my parents shared this and, although they loved the flavor of the pepper sauce, they thought the meat was a little bit overdone. Portion size was very nice and came with a little side salad. Kipsaté (Chicken skewers): I ordered this and really liked it! Three chicken skewers with this delicious thick, mildly sweet peanut sauce. It was nice to get a little taste of the Indonesian influence on Dutch culture. The skewers were prepared very nicely, the chicken was super juicy, lean, and tender. It came with a side salad, some pickled cabbage, and prawn chips which also were amazing. Very complete dish and really filling! Side of fries: we shared some fries with the table and I loved them. They were crispy on the outside and felt a little on the drier side on the inside which is my preference. Perfectly salted, not oily. Super solid fries! Side of grilled vegetables of the day: nice medley of broccoli, zucchini, and haricot verts. Super flavorful but a little oily for my taste. Overall still good though and didn't hurt my stomach :) Profiteroles: shared these for dessert and they were amazing. Three little dough pieces that were a little crispy with ice cream and a delicious chocolate sauce. Not like profiteroles I've tried before since the dough was a little different and didn't quite feel like a "puff" but more like a meringue. Still a great dessert to share and experience. Overall really liked this place! Thought the ambiance was very lowkey and cute, the service was very nice, and the food was solid. I also loved how this was in an area that seemed a little bit more calm than other parts of the city. Would come back again!

We arrived in Amsterdam in the evening on a day that just so happens to be King's Day so it was an absolute shitshow everywhere. Despite being very annoying to GF and I, the debauchery that was going on all around us in every direction was more tolerable to us born in the last century than my square elderly parents who were absolutely appalled and disturbed. After what felt like the journey on Last of Us, we finally made it through the crowds of drunk people, dodging broken bottles and crushed cans all over the place to arrive at Rosereijn Eetcafe. The entire walk, the internal terror built as I could feel my mother's rage seeping out of every pore. Given the crowds I was very concerned there would be no tables available but the restaurant gods appreciated my plight and we were able to take one of the last tables in the back. It's on the smaller side and definitely...snug. We were seated essentially in the walkway from the kitchen so not ideal but I would've taken a seat on the toilet. The place was crowded and busy so it took a minute for our table to be cleaned and then for us to get menus. The staff did a pretty good job given the circumstances. I LOVE the vegetarian options and traditional dutch items. GF and I started with the vegan bitterballen which I was really excited to try. As this was my first time trying it, I had literally zero frame of reference whatsoever but they were very good with a very creamy and savory center. It took effort for me to not blow through them before GF got a chance to eat them but you know what they say: you snooze, you lose. My dad ordered a soup which he enjoyed. For our mains, GF and I shared the vegetarian meal of the day (extra brownie points for this) and fries. My mom ordered the chicken satay and my dad, the veggie burger. My mom thought the satay sauce was a little too sweet but otherwise, we all enjoyed our meal but nothing to lose your shit about. The servers and counter people were super friendly and gave us awesome recommendations. The menu was very simple but I never knew that simplicity can taste so good! I had ordered an espresso and the overnight oats with fruits. I was amazed on how much flavor was in my oats in which I was not expecting at all. They filled the oats with coconut milk and rice which gave it a satisfying creaminess and the fruits were beautiful and refreshing. Everyone else at the table had really enjoyed their meal as well. I had brunch at De Gouden Reael today with two friends. It was a spectacular day (yes, I realize I am reviewing the weather), but we sat inside anyway. This place defines cute, the staff were all smiling and extremely attentive, the atmosphere was charming and we haven't even gotten to the food yet. I wasn't in a drinking mood but my friends were. One started with a Bloody Mary which he proclaimed to be the 2nd best he had ever had. When he ordered a 2nd my partner decided to order one but he was curious if they could add some Clamato Juice to make what they call a "Caesar" in Western Canada. The waitress immediately knew what he was talking about and the two slightly different drinks arrived in short order. Now let's get to the food. Amazing variety of selections for a Brunch. Not that there were dozens of choices but the range of choices was across the board. From a French dish called Poutine to a breakfast burrito (but not your average burrito) the selections were unique and each one had it's own distinct personality. They even had Artichokes on the menu and since my partner (soon to be husband) is an Artichoke whore he ordered one to go with his meal. This is where the rubber hit the road as far as I was concerned. I have prepared a lot of Artichokes. I've learned to cut them in half and remove the "Choke" so you can eat them down to the heart and then just dive into the meaty remains without dealing with the fuzz. Somehow this chef had figured out how to remove the choke without cutting the artichoke in half. The center of the artichoke had a glass ramekin inside with the dipping sauce and the top of the heart was exposed and absolutely free of any fuzz. Everything about it was so perfect we commented to the waitress how amazed we were and a few minutes later the Chef himself showed up at our table with an Artichoke and walked us through the process of preparing the perfect Artichoke. For $4.99 plus shipping I will pass along this information (Just kidding). It's actually simple to do or at least he made it appear so but it's too much to go into this review. So, to wrap this up, here's what our experience was today. Cute restaurant in a charming waterfront area. Fantastically trained staff all warm and friendly and attentive. Unique eclectic menu with delicious food, and according to my friends "great cocktails", When the Chef leaves his kitchen and comes upstairs to your table to share with you one of his cooking secrets that speaks volumes as to the "attitude" behind the business. It has been my experience that good service starts from the top down. That pretty much explained why the staff was so fantastic because they were being led by example, not intimidation. I've been coming to Amsterdam for 30 years. One of my oldest friends married a Dutch guy and they live in one of those beautiful old canal homes. I used to make it over here twice a year but things change so it's every few years now but Amsterdam will always be on my list as long as I can make it over here. Stay out of the Tourist Areas and, by the way, this restaurant is not in what I would call a "Tourist Area", get to know the Dutch people and their culture not just the inside of a "Coffee Shop" in a pot smoke haze. Think what you want about the women in the windows with the red lights, keep a constant eye out for the bicycles and now the electric cars; both capable of ending your vacation in short order, and when you're hungry, stop into De Gouden Reael and experience a restaurant that truly has its own heart and soul.
