Marvelous, marvelous, marvelous!…read more I've recently gotten really into windowsill gardening and have been filling all available spaces with tiny green loveliness. I was looking for a good garden shop that offered real variety (unlike the chain stores which seem to offer not much and a lot of it), and learned about Neal's. I'm so glad I did. While it is awkwardly located just across from a prison, the place is just great. Pots galore; a beautiful selection of bedding plants and other outdoor selections; and a great indoor shop featuring a greenhouse of houseplants, a wealth of garden tools, indoor pots and planters, and gifts for gardeners. While I've come to expect independent shops to be a touch more expensive than the chain stores (and am ok with this as I like supporting the little guy), I was pleasantly surprised at the super reasonable pricing at Neal's! I ended up bringing home more and larger plants than I would have anywhere else as they were so well priced. I kept going on about this to my husband, who very kindly didn't say too much as I added plant after plant to our basket! Definitely a place I'll be visiting on a semi-regular basis!

Pots! Freaking LOADS of pots!…read more That's what greats you as you enter Neal's Nurseries. It's a pot fest. Little ones, round ones, glass ones, square ones, silver ones... You get the picture. If you want something to put your plant's in that isn't the ground, you'll do well here. So, that's your pots sorted. Inside you've got your regular garden centre type stuff - a good selection of tools, seeds, other ...err...things you need for your garden. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and are happy to offer up advice - but don't expect help to come to you - you gotta go and seek help on your garden related conundrums. It's in a bit of a weird location though - right opposite Wandsworth Prison. Not sure if that matters, but it's probably best to avoid picking up a spade when you hear about an escape on the news.

Sheen Garden Centre has beautiful plants, shrubs and all things plant indoor / outdoor related…read more What it doesn't have is service oriented staff. I went in on a Saturday and proceeded to ask for a recommendation on what interior plants would be good for someone who isn't good with maintaining plants... (aka: what doesn't need to be watered too much and still thrives) not one but two of the staff looked at me like I had eight heads. Is this a strange question? I would think not? I went ahead and made a list of all the plants I liked that looked easy enough to maintain. I came back at the end of my shift to order for delivery plants that I had picked out. Granted, we walked in at 10 minutes to 6 p.m. which is when they close, we knew we were cutting it tight. I walked up to the same staff person that I had chatted with earlier in the day and told her I was here to order the plants I had previously picked out. The staff member seemed to be very upset that I took her away from writing in the ledger and proceeded to tell me that "we close in 10 minutes." I told her no problem, we'd picked everything out already and again she said, "Whatever you can do in 10 minutes, if you can." I just think there could have been an easier and nicer way to be told that we didn't have the time to buy our plants. Instead, we were being scolded for spending money in the establishment. She could have gotten up and helped us bring our selections to the till or just apologized that we didn't have enough time but please come back the next day. I just don't get it. And we won't be getting our plants from there.

Rassell's is a Kensington institution and I have a love-hate relationship with this garden centre…read more I love their selection of high quality plants and the way they display them - all cramped into a tiny space behind the main shop on Earls Court Road. I'm not so keen on being treated like a second-class customer - on my last visit I was gazumped not once, but twice!! The first was forgivable as I thought the lady behind me was queuing to pay when she launched into a long list of requests!! The next member of staff I approached said "Yes, madam" just to walk off and serve someone else. I almost didn't bother with a third attempt .... Their main clientele seems rather posh and pushy, and most definitely regular - I think it must show that I am a very occasional gardener without indepth knowledge of botanical terms. The quality of service and advice also varies greatly between members of staff and from rather off-puttish to well informed and friendly. My main reason for returning is the fact that they offer a delivery service to local addresses - as I don't drive a car this is an essential bonus and quite affordable at less than a tenner.

Ya know what, though... totally worth it! It's like having another room that I can decorate almost completely with plants. That's where Rassell's comes in. I can't say it was anymore expensive than anything else in London. I think we spent about a total of 50 pounds on all of our plants. AND they delivered them to us same-day FOR FREE. I did, however, sneak over to Homebase for pots and soil. We now have four tomato plants; two strawberry plants; rosemary (blooming with amazing lavender as we speak); thyme; lemon verbena; hanging baskets brimming with several shades of pink and purple petunias; hot pink cosmos; the sweetest-smelling mint; and a beautiful hydrangea that blooms with large blue flowers. Pretty good for the price I'd say. Can't wait to do it all again next spring!
