After many years living in Ogden, we tried Tony's pizza, supposedly an Ogden staple. Middle aged coworkers now living in Salt Lake always reminisce to me about their love of this restaurant. Readers, it's fine. The pizza was good. We got the Tony's combo. The service was alright, if a little slow. The ambiance is pure 90s and in desperate need of a refresh. One curiosity was the meatball sandwich. The server asked if I wanted everything on it, and I replied yes. When the dish came, the sandwich had meatballs, tomato sauce, and cheese placed between a good sized soft hoagie roll. These three ingredients seem like the minimum requirement for a meatball sub to be a meatball sub and not "everything" that might be added. Strange. The price for a large pizza, meatball sub with "everything", a side salad, and three drinks came to about 36 bucks. A good deal, considering the same amount of money would get you just one large pizza from Lucky Slice a couple miles down the road. read more

I feel like we stepped into the Twilight Zone with this visit. Husband and I both craving pizza, and pasta for me as well. Went 'round and around about trying some place new but decided to go back to Tony's. We know what we're getting, and it's not hi-brow service, hi-brow food nor hi-brow prices. However, not hi-brow doesn't even cover it this time, and we don't know if the meltdown came from the kitchen or the server. 1. Not busy; only 1 other person eating when we arrived. Drink order taken by server (didn't give her name). NEG 2. Server asked if I wanted a lemon in my Diet Coke. PLUS for her. 3. Ordered 1/2 rigatoni meal w/2 extra meatballs and a 12" Tony's Combo Pizza, black olives instead of green. Server repeated back order. PLUS 4. Drinks, bread & salad arrived. PLUS 5. Family of 5 seated about 10 min after us get their pizza. NEG 6. Family of 2 seating about 13 min after us get their pizza. NEG 7. Server comes to the table and says, "I bet you're wondering where your pizza is." Understatement. Husband is hungry, and now he's annoyed. "Yes, we are." She explains it was made with green olives and the correct one is in the oven now, but if we'd like the incorrect one in the meantime she can bring it. How long for the correct one, we ask? 5 min, we're told. We decline the wrong pizza and ask for my rigatoni. NEG QUESTION: Why did the other 2 tables get their pizzas before we were notified that ours - which was ordered first - was made incorrectly? 8. Rigatoni arrives and looks NOTHING like the beautiful picture I took on a previous visit that is currently featured as the picture on their Yelp page. LOTS of sauce, not enough rigatoni. NEG 9. Husband and I share rigatoni, and still no pizza (7 min). In the meantime, the family of 5 has checked out, so my husband is at the register to pay for our sodas and rigatoni and we're going to leave. NEG 10. Pizza arrives while husband is at cashier and server says she took it off our bill. I told her we need a box, and my husband comes to the table & says leave the pizza - it looks raw, like all of the toppings were just thrown on it and not cooked, canned mushrooms, and we don't take food if we haven't paid for it. NEG 11. Server arrives with box and a cup of ice cream (no lid) which I have never received with any of my meals, so this is a first. We decline both. NEG/POS? Tony's Pizza is a long established place in southeast Ogden. The menu is very traditional and Italian; no fancy modern variations here. The pizzas are very good, and filling. There's a good amount of toppings on each one. Room ambience is low; much more of an open cafeteria sort of setting. The place is usually crowded, which is a good sign of what you're in for. First time customer at Tony's today. I ordered a large pizza with pepperoni, sausage, jalapeños, mushrooms, and extra cheese. And also a regular order of spaghetti and meatballs. First, placing the order over the phone was super easy, and it was ready right on time, and a very reasonable price. The pizza and spaghetti were both fabulous. I grew up eating this pizza when it was sold for fundraisers. I loved as a kid when someone would sell the pizzas because mom would always order 4 and keep them in the freezer for a special treat. I never did eat at the actual restaurant until recently. I just moved back to Utah after being gone for 15 years. Driving by and saw Tony's, remembered all those frozen pizzas from my childhood and decided to give it a go. We went inside and found a seat. It wasn't busy even during lunch time. We ordered a large salad and a pizza to share. I was a little surprised by the salad being only lettuce and dressing. The dressing was good and quite tangy. I had a canker and that tangy dressing stung like the dickens! It was delicious though. I do think they could add some tomatoes and croutons to the salad to make it a little more appealing. The pizza came out hot and cheesy. I normally prefer fresh mushrooms on my pizza but for some reason, I've always loved Tony's canned mushrooms. The pizza brought back memories but when I think about it, it's not all that great. It isn't bad pizza by any means but for me, it's more nostalgic than anything. I think the crust tastes a little bit like frozen pizza. They did load it full of toppings which I appreciate. All in all, it was good, not great but good. The service was fast and friendly. This place by far has the best pizza in Ogden. It was always a hangout for us in high school. Try to drop in every time we are in Ogden. Well, this visit did not go well. Don't get me wrong, the pizza is always great. And they have a very simple salad with an oil and vinegar dressing that I love. So we ordered the large Tony's combo and salads. All were great. The service this time was terrible. It was like the staff did not care at all I could somewhat understand if they were crowded but they were not. Our server took our drink order and got it wrong corrected it but left the wrong drinks with us. They brought out the salads and just set them on the table and walked away. The pizza was delivered in the same manner. The server never came back to check on us or ask if everything was ok. When we finally got the server to get a to go box, they just dropped the check on top of it. You pay at the front of the restaurant, so we walked up to pay. We waited and waited for at least 10 minutes. All the time, servers and others walking by us and doing nothing. By now. There were people in line waiting to pay their bills. Never again! The food has next to no flavor. We had to recut the pizza slices and the crust is no thin we could barely pick up a slice. For a full size pasta dinner you only get 2 meatballs the size of golf balls. They brought out the bread first, then drinks, then salad. By the time the pasta came the bread was cold. They only offer a watered down vinaigrette dressing. And to top it all off they don't serve beer. What kind of pizza place doesn't serve beer??? The leftover boxes are styrofoam cups. I've been coming to Tony's pizza for many years, but not really in last 15 years. When I was young and in school, my family frequented this place. We ordered garlic bread and a half and half pizza. The garlic bread was cooked in foil so the butter wasn't really browned on top which made the bread seem oily. The garlic flavor was a bit weak as well. The pizza used canned mushroom, which is my pet peeve, and the pineapple was not very plentiful either. There was a large crust area on the pizza without sauce or toppings that I ended up throwing away rather than eating it, because there wasn't much flavor. I would say the pizza was ok, but I'm not going out of my way to get back here any time soon. read more

The staff is kind and the food is amazing. I had some of their fresh bread and it was phenomenal. Main course I chose the cheese tortellini (which has red sauce, not alfredo) and it was amazing. I wish it had more than only two meatballs for a big dish like that. I also got the ice cream. It's chocolate with a little bit of sherbert kick, also yummy. Meatballs tasted very strange in the sandwich and spaghetti. Spaghetti sauce was very bland and noodles were watery. Pizzas were done on top but crust was undercooked. They used canned mushrooms on the pizza too, not very good. The entire top part of the bread was burnt on the pastrami sandwich. Garlic bread tasted like plain bread. Every time I visit my family in Ogden, I have to have a Tony's pizza. The price point is excellent for a mom and pop. Their menu options are good too. The atmosphere isn't that great, they could use some interior upgrades. It's bare...tables and chairs that's all. Which makes it a better option for take out. If you're dining in , don't bring a date if you're trying to impress! Why I like their pizza: they are massive! AND they are one of the only pizza joints thats offers green olives for a topping. My aunt and I ordered a pizza to share and couldn't believe our eyes when it arrived. My family has been going here for decades. The food it really good! We love the salad and garlic bread, and we also love the pizza. That being said, the past few years we have had such HORRIBLE experiences with the restaurant, we are thinking about stopping our yearly Christmas tradition of eating there. The staff is completely rude (it's been like that for years). Last night we tried calling to get takeout for over an hour. We kept calling while making the trip to Ogden, at one point they answered the phone and just set it down on the table (no one talked to us), I guess to get the phone to stop ringing. While I was still on the phone trying to get someone to pick it up, we arrived at the restaurant, we got there around 5 minutes before they closed (yes we were going to be 'those' people, but we did try ordering takeout). They wouldn't seat us and told us they were out of every food-pasta, pizza, etc. I was still on the phone while my mom was talking with the employee, I could hear the people talking in the kitchen on the phone and in person while we were there. After we gave up and left, the guy finally hung the phone up on me. I don't understand why they couldn't have answered the phone the first time we called and told us they couldn't take any more orders (rather than sitting the phone down expecting us to hang up). That isn't our first bad experience, and it's gotten bad enough that we are probably going to stop going there (and service has to be that horrible for us to stop such a big family tradition). I finally found where I should've been eating pizza in Utah all along. The first experience with a 2 hour wait, with reservations, wasn't the greatest start to my love affair. But I can forgive all of that. As soon as the salad arrived, tossed in that magical tangy Italian dressing, I was hooked. Then our pizzas arrived. Hot, melty, built to order with a chewy satisfying crust!! It's in an old building, and if you're not an Ogden resident or a northern Utah native, you'd probably miss it. I did. For years. Then all of a sudden everyone I knew was saying, "Tony's, oh yah, we've been going there forever. It's great. Did you love the salad dressing?" Traders. All of them.
