Spicy Onions and Mustard
Charles T.

Wanted to compare some local trucks so I grabbed some dogs from Tony's. First thing was they had the Manhattan Special soda. I love that stuff so I was pumped. Nice kick from these onions but I will say in the Newark area I had other onions I preferred more. Won't say from where, don't want to pit one against another...plus now you have to go looking for them and give these trucks some business ;) The chili cheese dog was solid, really enjoyed that one. There is another truck (different one than earlier) who I feel has better chili, but this was a winner anyway. I'd definitely grab a bite here again.

I've been coming here for almost 40 years. It's not the same as the old Tonys nothing ever will be, but it's pretty close. The original owner sold the business to the guy that used to deliver the hotdogs to him and he's carried the torch ever since. The onions and chili are still great. The hotdog is a little skinnier, that's because I think they stopped making the old hotdogs which were called Golden D brand. Anyway, I will continue to come here and support this business when I'm in the area. The truck has been there since 1968.

Amazing chilly n cheese.

Decent truck located in the rotunda of Branch Brook on Lake Street and Park Ave. Got a hot sausage with potatoes and mustard. Was good, wished it was grilled tho. Next time I will get chili and cheese, but for me it's best to eat it early in the morning so I won't have heartburn for the rest of the day lol

Co-worker and I needed hot dogs for lunch today because it was beautiful...not many more of these days this year. This was my first time here (still working on the nj.com top 25 list and this was #4 on the list and our 15th crossed off the list...ten to go) and was impressed with these dogs...hell, I KNEW they'd be great because there were cops in line with us - never been someplace with local police where the food sucked...NEVER! Ok...So I had three dogs today...and I'm sorry, but for dirty water dogs you can never go wrong with Sabrett's. Anyway, one with Chili/cheese, one with chili/kraut/mustard, and one Superdog (Chili/cheese/hot onions/ mustard/kraut and maybe relish). Their chili is really good...not quite as good as Curbside Cafe's chili in Parsippany, but right up there with a great texture and wonderful flavor. The Superdog was almost TOO much 'stuff' on the dog, but it was tasty just the same...and the hot/spicy onions have a NICE kick. I'm not usually a huge fan of the dirty water dogs (I like the flavor of a fried or grilled dog better), but I would come back here in a heartbeat. Beautiful view of the lake in the park, church bells ringing in the nearby cathedral at noon, and easy parking. My co-worker and I both agree...two thumbs up!

Best Hot Dog Truck in Newark. The dog has just a firm enough snap and they taste great. Best Hot Onions easily of any truck, that's not even debatable. Always friendly and fast service. Easily accessible and the dogs "hold up" well if you are planning to pick them up and bring them back home (usually while eating a dog and driving with napkin hand ;)

Best Hotdogs in Newark!! Both of my parents are from Newark and we always get Tony's when we come back and visit family!

Left hot onions and cheese, right chili and cheese.

Still just as good as I remember growing up around the corner. The flavors and ingredients are the same down to the awesome hit onions.

(And that ATM machine at the corner? It looks like it'll not only steal your identity but your soul as well.) My last visit (2023-ish) I tried their 'combo' (one hot dog, one sausage) which was... okay. But when they're slinging a double Italian hot dog? They're firing on all cylinders. Tommy's is not shy to pile a wicked amount of grub into that pizza bread. The hot dogs kind of get lost under a mountain of deep-fried and oily (but delicious) sliced spuds. (I do wish they weren't so stingy with the peppers and onions to really balance out the meal.) The 'Holy Trinity' when it comes to Italian hot dogs in North Jersey is a no-brainer... Dickie Dee's, Jimmy Buff's and Tommy's. (For me - no one comes close to Dickie Dee's but my one kid said Tommy's was his [current] fave.) As for that couple that came cashless? A good Samaritan behind me pulled out a wad of cash (it's not wise to pull out a fistful of cash anywhere you go but it's ESPECIALLY not wise when you're in the rough and tumble streets of Elizabeth, let's be real) and after swapping Venmo information everything was a-okay. Take-out/to-go only. Parking is atrocious. Guy behind the glass - always aces. (Oh, and... cash only!)

I've had the sausage/dog combo before that's like an Italian Dog and I loved it but I had never just had some good old doggies here so I grabbed a couple. Went with 1 with red onions and mustard and 1 with chili, diced onion, and mustard. I love red onions, just a big nostalgia thing to my youth getting dogs in Coney Island at Nathan's. These onions were tasty. The chili wasn't what I was expecting but the crunch from the diced onion was welcomed. The rolls tasted fresh and the dogs had a fantastic snap and delicious flavor. No surprise here - Tommy's - Didn't Suck!

There is a cute outdoor seating area with a tent and potted plant decor. It's nicer than it looks; I mean that in the best way possible! It looks kitchsy if you pass by quickly but the decor and outdoor furniture is actually nice and sturdy and the eclectic nature works. The inside of the food truck has vintage photos of celebrities and 50s pinups eating hot dogs. They have lots of interesting sodas and some chips and snacks too. Great for a casual local date or family outing!

I was driving someplace ELSE for lunch today and saw Joey Mac's while driving down Frank E. Rogers Blvd in Harrison...wherever else I was going was gonna have to wait! Pulled right over and jumped out to grab and go. I ordered a Chili/cheese dog, a chili/cooked onions/mustard dog, and a smoked kielbasa with sexy kraut and mustard. Skin-on Sabrett's always make for a delicious dirty water dog and this was the case today. The Chili/cheese dog was excellent...with a very nice tasting chili that isn't too sweet. I don't know what they do to their cooked onions, but my second dog was awesome as well-nice connection between the chili and the other toppings. But the coupe-de-gras was the kielbasa...looked like a regular hot dog but when you bite into it is is smoked heaven! Whatever the hell they put in their sexy kraut (other than the chopped bacon and onions) really is SEXY! SO.FRIGGIN.GOOD!!!! When my co-worker returns from his current trip we will need to stop here again!!! I don't know how long they've been here, but I can't believe I'm the first to review this little gem.

The game was held at Mike Sheppard Sr. Field which is where the Seton Hall University softball team plays...a very nice facility. As we left the house late (I had to drive from Newark all the way home to get her, then drive back to Newark...ugh), we didn't get a chance to eat so I was praying they had some kind of concession stand or food truck. When we finally got to the field we were SO happy to find Donny's Dogs. Donny's is apparently a pretty popular hot dog truck from the area and the dirty water dogs are supposed to be pretty good. My daughter and I each ordered two dogs-hers with just ketchup and I had one with mustard and ketchup and one with kraut and chili. Hard to beat the price for the plain dogs-three for $5. The plain dogs were very good, but I didn't care for the chili and kraut dog-had a funky flavor that I just didn't like. The rest of the stuff Donny's had for sale (candy, drinks, chips, etc) seemed like it was decently priced. And the end of the night we had some good hot dogs, got to watch a great game that my daughter's future high school team won, and had some good Daddy-Daughter time. I hope I get another chance to try Donny's Dogs...
