Last time out was a 4 star, this time I hit the shop in Verona and it was 5 star. Fresh rockland bakery roll, and two excellent dogs. Got a St Patrick's Day special and the loaded baked potato. That potato dog was serious. This is my 2nd dog from Chris' that had a potato component and both were home runs. I got to meet Ant and talk for a bit and that was awesome...I'm already looking forward to going back. Service was fast and excellent and I dig the shop he has there in Verona. After following them on social media, I made my way to their famous hot dog truck on Heller parkway. Now I see why people keep visiting them. Unfortunately owner wasn't there, but I got to meet Nick and another kid. Super efficient, friendly and engaging. Cars kept pulling up and getting their dogs, but more than once folks just order and hang around for small talk. It's very family friendly. Ok, now to the dogs. With a wide variety I kept it classic with the 1st one. Mustard and kraut. Straight NY style. Kraut hot, bun fresh and brown mustard. On the second dog I went for their famous hot onions. A bit different from what I am used to, but a good choice. I can see where it may be too hot for some, but it was tasty. The heat did not take away from the taste. Overall they have many items on the menu and have seem to change the scope of hotdogs. Mashed Potato, Slaw etc. A bit too much for me, but definitely a hit with the rgulars. Decent dogs. Chili a large disappointment. Bland and NO "BITE". Not what it was in the past.

I've been following Chris for a couple of years now on TikTok and was finally able to make it up to Newark from Maryland. I was super excited to finally try their dirty water specialty dogs and I'm pretty familiar with their menu (specialties change). The service was top notch as to be expected from Chris and crew. I ordered three hot dogs (disco dog with fresh mutz, potato sticks and brown gravy, chili cheese and hot onions, and a chili, cheese and hot cherry mash potato). I devoured these hot dogs so fast that I forgot to take pictures! The disco dog was SO good and you can't go wrong with the chili, cheese, and hot onions (chili and hot onions are house made). I plan on checking out his brick and mortar location tomorrow while I'm still in the area. If you're in the Newark are you must stop by for a fast affordable lunch (dogs are about $3.25-$4 depending on the dog). read more

The Verona location was super clean and nice. The owner and his assistant were also pleasant. The dogs were fine as were the toppings. I was partial to the onions and less a fan of the potato mash. I lived in this state more than 30 years and I've never heard of this famous dog cart lol. The most expensive combo is $4 bucks so there's zero excuse not to try one. I got the "Everything" and the dude asked me if I liked it spicy. Hell yeah, I like my shit spicy! And wow, it did not disappoint!!! As soon as I saw this dude prep my dog and then ROLL IT UP IN PAPER, I started freaking out. For those of you that know what I'm talkin about KNOW what I'm talkin about lol. But amazingly, the dog unrolled itself nicely and I was able to fit everything in my mouth without spilling anything. It was like magic. This place is next level. I live 3hrs north in upstate NY and made a point to stop here on my way to six flags and holy hell these dogs are insane! They're a little smaller than your average hotdog which is perfect cause you can't have just 1. First off the hot Cherry mash potatoes spund unusual for a hotdog topping but they were outstandingly good. The flaming hot onions had some heat but totally manageable. They didn't burn to eat but left a little tingle on the lips. I love hotdogs and I eat them everywhere I go but flat out these are the best non traditional dogs I've ever had. PART 2 Today was the day we compared long standing Favorite Tony's many years under new ownership to Chris's Red Hots See Tony's previous review (4 Stars). My father for 40 years also here in Newark Owned multiple hot dog food trucks and myself worked them for years so If I'm eating "DIRTY WATER DOGS" I'm going to try the two long standing that I remember as I haven't had a hot dog off a truck in countless years. Parked on Corner of Branch Brook Park Heller Parkway n the Old 1st (NORTH) word of Newark on the Belleville border it might even be Belleville. Today we keep it simple with Hot dogs, Hot onions others with Sauerkraut. Mind you almost all trucks here use same hot dog distributor so in theory the only thing different should be the onions. Having just come from Tony's The comparison will be fresh since it was almost 20 minutes since my last dog LOL. Here like Tony's dogs were hot, rolls fresh. Toppings were well too many to recite but we keep it simple here being a traditionalist. OK His onions were absolutely hands down the best I've had since my father made them. Spicy without being over the top. Been in NJ 3 weeks been to countless restaurants, on the NJ Boardwalks and this was the best meal I've had in 3 weeks LOL what can I say. They were great! read more

I stoped by today with my family. I ordered the sweet onions with cheese , it was delicious. That snap of the hot dog is so satisfying. My kids had a mamacita that comes with spicy toppings they thought it was delicious. My daughter had her plain dog , she was pleased. My husband had his dogs for free apparently because Anthony was promoting the egg topper. Nick the other employee is a cute kid . He served us our sodas and water. Next time I'll try the sausage which is a longer hot dog. The prices are reasonable. The service is fast and accurate. It's good to know their recipes are homemade. read more

Stopped today at Chris' Red Hots because it was close and I read great things here on Yelp. I'm not a huge fan of dirty water dogs, but I'm not a snob either. I do tend to judge them against one another instead of against grilled dogs because it's simply a different taste. So let me tell you something...I just had some EXCELLENT dogs from Chris' Red Hots truck. I ordered three dogs: one with hot onions, kraut, and mustard; one with Chili, cheese, and hot onions; and a masterpiece with Mashed potatoes, chili, and cheese. The hot onions here are hot...deliciously, wonderfully, hot and SOOO flavorful; the chili was hearty and delicious; and the mashed potatoes, chili and cheese dog was one of the best dirty water dogs I have EVER eaten! Thought I would give an update on what I consider the best hot dog truck around. Even 6 years after my original review, Chris' Red Hots still gets a 5 Star Rating from me. They have updated their menu with new items showing up all the time and their hot sausages are the best. Whatever you try, their hot onions & cherry pepper potatoes are home made and delicious. They have a new truck since my last review but still at the same location. Anthony, Joe & Mike are very friendly and know what I want as soon as they see me. They always make sure my sausages are fresh and their prices are right on. Even after all these years, I make sure I pass by at least once a week and am never disappointed & I am sure you won't be disappointed either. These guys are the best I've ever tried. read more

I'm a Chicago native and always believed nothing can a beat a Chicago dog ... until now! There's something about these dogs that are phenomenally delicious and comforting. This truck is known for their hot onions. I don't eat onions but those who do love them here for the most part. Otherwise just fair. The dogs are skinless Sabretts. I prefer natural casing. And they're small to boot, 11/1 which in hot dog speak means 11 to a pound. Anything smaller than 10/1 is too small. And 10 is even pushing it. Tony's nearby is much better. read more
