Paid to have a guitar repaired there. Was told it was fixed and the issue was not actually addressed at all. The issue was that one of the pickups was quiet in the middle position. I was told when I went to pick it up that they couldn't find anything wrong other than a small piece of metal that they removed must have been cutting the sound out (did not test the guitar in the store just took their word). Come to find out, when I got it home, that the issue is the switch and that both pickups don't come on until the switch is midway between the middle and bridge position...you would think that when paying for a repair this is something they would figure out easily. Complete waste of money. I also asked them to take a look at a fret-buzz and they fully forgot so that was also somewhat annoying (I paid for a setup and repair). Guitar was exactly the same when I got it back down to the same exact fret-buzz. I was so dissatisfied that I refused to even drive back there to get a refund. Ultimately, untrustworthy. I believe whoever did the "repair" was deceitful to me. Now in all fairness, this was a few years back and the same people may not be working there anymore...I just thought of it again when I had to repair the exact same issues myself. read more

SHOP REVIEW - Our experience with Tone Tailors. Gary Brown is a tone enthusiast, he carefully crafts the sound of every piece of his guitar sound to where it sounds like what he envisions in his head. Every piece from what pickups are in his guitars, which cables the signal travels through, which pedals are true bypass, which tubes are in his amps, and of course which speakers deliver the sound to him and the audience. He has been looking for a particular vintage speaker for one part of his Marshall tone and was excited when our "tone guru" friend found one online and nearby. As the EV SRO 12" speaker is no longer being made, finding a vintage one available for a reasonable price was awesome. We called the shop had a conversation about the speaker, as the picture listed showed a small imperfection/repaired tear, and was told that the item was indeed FUNCTIONAL and 8 ohms, so we purchased the speaker over the phone (as we didn't want to take the chance that someone else might scoop it up before we got to his shop) and told "Glen" that we would be by then next day to pick it up in person. When we arrived, the shop looked new, everything shiny and arranged well... but there was literally NOBODY there... we walked around calling out "yoohoo, anyone here" for several minutes, surprised that the shop was unattended. Finally someone emerged from a side room, and we told him we were there to pick up the speaker. It was dirty, sitting on top of a pile of boxes, off to the side. He picked it up and started to hand it to us, so I cheerfully asked for a box to protect it on the ride home, then asked for a printed copy of the receipt. When we got in the car and started the hour and 15 minute drive home, we both kinda said at the same time, "I think we should stop by and see what Tim thinks about this" referring to our awesome tone/repair guy at Full Custom Music Repair. Gary called and asked what time he was closing for the day, and when we realized we would make it there in time, he said "I just got this ugly piece of history I would like you to check for me". Tim was excited for us too, and happily checked the speaker with two different instruments, one which checked to see if the speaker was working at all (getting a signal), and then one which read what ohms it was. You can imagine the shock for all three of us when the reading, multiple times, came back as 32 ohms. I mean just like all the air went out of the room kind of shock. I asked if there was any way it could be fixed, and Tim said he has a speaker guy that does amazing work, and gave us his number. The next day we called John at Mueller Speakers and told him everything, he said bring it to me let's see what needs to be done. So then we called Glen back at Tone Tailors and told him what was going on. He said, "okay, so you can either bring it back, or get it fixed and come in with the receipt", we agreed that we would get it fixed and be in. So, yes John at Mueller Speakers is AWESOME, he ran all kinds of tests and diagnostics and told us that it was good news because it was a $30 fix, instead of the $100-$150 fix we thought it might be. He said, don't worry, I know the owners of the complex that Tone Tailors is in, I will make you an itemized invoice and if they give you any lip I will go in and kick butt for you... We picked up the repaired speaker today. We took the invoice in and asked the clerk on the register for the repair costs, like Glen had promised. ... Here is where things get funky again... the dude behind the counter looked like a deer caught in the headlights, like his brain was not connected... he just blinked... Gary explained to him twice what was going on, and he still didn't understand... he got up and got the phone, left a voice mail for Glen, then said "well when he calls back we can deal with this"... which was the stupid and disrespectful thing to do... I had to calm Gary down, and tell him again, in different words, he said, "why didn't you bring it back"... then I had to describe everything I just typed above... he said "so you want a refund", I said "No, I want you to pay us back for the repairs, like you guys said you would"... Gary said, "why didn't you check the speaker when you bought it from somebody"... the guy said "we bought it from a 'trusted customer' in his amp and then took it out of his amp"... Gary said "so sometime between then and when we picked it up you guys didn't check it with a meter to see the ohms?... sounds like you guys may have damaged it when you took it out"... then the guy reads aloud down through the itemized invoice and repeats the phrase "trusted customer"... insinuating that we were not to be trusted... his demeanor and tone screamed of racism... then he picked up the phone and called again, then I said "we shouldn't have to wait all day for you to cut a check because Glen didn't leave notes on our account". We were there 15 minutes, it seemed like eternity, I am still upset. read more

I had the chance to go to Tone Tailors today and my review is somewhat mixed. I will start with the positives and then get into a major negative. Tone Tailors has a nice selection of lower end guitars and basses. They have a typical selection of amplifiers with a couple of surprises. The store is beautiful and nicely laid out. When I was in, there were a couple of used Gibson Custom Shop guitars and a 1970s era Les Paul Special Double Cut. There were some cool older Fenders as well. Prices were pretty typical for guitar stores. Effect pedals are the forte at this store and they don't disappoint. If that is what you are looking for, they probably have what you are looking for in a few flavors. The pedal section in the store is nicely laid out as well. My big negative is service. A store that has one customer in the store and essentially ignores that customer, confuses me. I had to seek people out to ask questions. I was not greeted when I came in and not acknowledged when I was looking at items. Unfortunately for them, I am the type of customer that they not only want but need. This store essentially ignored a guy that buys what they sell, especially the high end of what they sell. Oh well. In summary, I probably won't be back. It is a cool looking boutique store in an obscure location. My wife bought me a guitar from here and she said she got a great deal and great service. My experience was not the same as hers. read more

I had some used guitars to sell. Some were high-end collectibles, some were student models. I've been in business as a professional performer, guitar teacher, and I also have been doing full guitar restorations, repairs and sets ups- since 1999. Therefore= All these guitars were 'fresh out of the shop' - Clean, intonated with my Peterson 450 Strobotuner, neck radius set into the bridge saddles, truss rod adjustments, etc. etc. etc. = ALL of these guitars were STAGE READY! Hang it on the wall- and sell it. I talked to AJ, and after THREE phone calls, we 100% crystal clear on what I was bringing. I loaded up my car, drove up to Lititiz, only to be VERY low-balled in price, VERY insulting! Pawn Shop low ball offers NOT a nice first impression. NOT very professional. NOT very courteous. NOT willing to be remotely, reasonable with their offers. NOT remotely even WILLING to negotiate, or meet me somewhere in the middle. VERY unreasonable! I was even low-balled on what I wanted out of my consignment offers on the higher end collectible stuff. This was AFTER after they seen what they were sold for, on the internet....REALLY? What a GRAND waste of my time, trying to deal with them! I'll NEVER be back~ The entire experience was just ridiculous...... read more

I'm local to the area and use Tone Tailor often but not as much as I wish I could. There have been mixed reviews on the personnel at the store but my experience has been they have always been friendly, and helpful. This is the chance that if you come in at off hours they are working on equipment and maybe focused on that. They are a smaller operations so the owner wears a number of hats. The hardware at the store has been commented on and for a smaller shop I think they have a great selection. On aspect not commented on was the lessons. The instructors they have on board know what they are doing and can work with everyone from the beginner thru advanced students. These aren't guys who yesterday were giving lessons out of the back of their Mom's apartment but rather are mainly gigging musicians who are augmenting their income via lessons. Most have formal educations in their trade. Final comment is on their repair services. They have in store ability to repair most equipment - none of this drop off you gear only to later find out it was shipped out somewhere to be worked on. You can get real time feedback on where it is at in the repair process. Only slight draw back is they are in demand so they may not be able to turn it around over night. Tone Tailors is the kind of store you'll want to go back to. It's interesting to see the musicians who just hang out there discussing the local music scene. read more

I needed guitar strings ASAP, as I usually order online. I have only been in this area a year, but I needed a guitar store. I found Tone Tailors on the web and called to make sure they were open. I traveled out about 20 minutes to the store. I was greeted warmly, and immediately was being helped to make the best possible selection for my needs. I'm a drummer by trade and play the guitar as a hobby. All three guys at the store that day were awesome! Please make sure they get recognized for delivering a great customer experience. I have been in many music stores in my life and sometimes you get treated like a second class citizens for whatever reason. Not the case here. I was treated like a friend and they gained my business. I never felt like I had to validate my Musical credentials to get top of the line service. I will be here again. I've known the owners of Tone Tailors for a very long time and the store has grown from the very beginning. I can honestly say without a doubt that the guy's run a great store and quality does comes first! Years ago I remember ordering a new G & L Strat type guitar and when it came in something was wrong. Instead of selling it to me though they insisted it be returned for a much better one. Every guitar, amp, pedal, and gear going through that store is checked for quality! Last year I happened to buy a new Fender Mex Stratocaster at Guitar Center at the last minute. Several weeks later when I went to pick it up they never offered me a free set up or guitar inspection. The Tone Tailors are going to make sure every guitar and amp plays at it's best because that's what they do! The staff is very helpful but, never to pushy and always up to date on there knowledge of gear. I Highly recommend Tone Tailors. read more

Just wanted to take the time to leave some serious positive feedback for this place. I don't do this often but felt it was totally justified. I came in with an amp with some troublesome noise that was tough to diagnose. After a quick conversation and some playing, John (I think) dropped everything and pulled the chassis apart in the middle of the store. We figured out that the voice coil in the speaker went so he replaced it with a used cannabis Rex they had in stock. Now my blues jr sounds better than it ever had. I'm super appreciative as this was non-routine work for a shop that doesn't typically do amp repairs. All this to say, this is clearly a great shop and will absolutely be getting my business from here on out. Thanks guys! read more

I stopped in their store today and they were busy but acknowledged my presence. After a few minutes they gladly looked at my acoustic guitar that had some issues that needed minor repair.
