We have been going here for the last couple years with our son. He is now almost 3 years old and half of the time he is sleeping the entire time and the other half he is awake playing on his Pad. Saying hi to people. Agnes and her husband/ the owners pulled us aside tonight when we were there checking out. 140$ tab.....and said we are no longer welcome unless we come without our toddler son because Customers have been complaining. Keep in mind we're going on a Saturday from 4:00 to 5:30- that's not date night and no one is in there. Restaurant is mostly empty. Great! Thanks. Second time to this location at a busier time and I am compelled to lower my previous assessment of this little neighbor hood Sushi Restaurant to a 3 star. I previously rated it with a 4 stars but this time I went on a Friday evening at 6.30 pm and it was busy. Not the busy where there is a wait for a table but enough to keep the staff hopping. The food I felt was once again very good but this time the service was lacking and more evident. I noticed a table get up and let the waiter know that they could not wait any longer and needed to leave, sounded like the food was taking too long. My gripe this time is the service, I sat at the Sushi bar again; be forewarned, don't expect expedited service from the floor staff. The Sushi Chef is all over it, its when you require the waiter from the floor to order anything other than Sushi that seems to delay things. It took quite some time,'10 min at least' to be noticed, actually I should rephrase that- I was noticed but there seemed to be no urgency;when the waiter did come over to offer me something to drink I jumped at the chance to put in my entire order. After my entire order was given to me I never saw the waiter again until I beckoned him to get my check ready. This is the 2nd time that we've been here and I'm disappointed at myself that I didn't do a review. One thing I didn't like is that they have these "specials of the house" menus with no prices. I hate menu's that have no prices, WTF??? I'm not going to ask every time how much is something. We ordered the following: Mushroom Medley ($14): This was one of the specials where the price wasn't listed. It was really good, it had different fresh mushrooms from Enoki to Oyster. It was sautéed in Oyster sauce and it had some asparagus. The portions was pretty decent. Maguro and Yellowtail Sushi: decent size pieces. They definitely melted in my mouth. 3 Fresh Oysters: it was OK size. I rather go to Redondo Beach and pick my own big fat oysters. Yummy Roll: it has shrimp tempura, avocado, radish sprouts, cucumber with romaine and soy paper. This roll was definitely yummy. I highly recommend it. 911 Roll: If 911 meant to be spicy then it's a non-911 roll. But it was definitely tasty. It had spicy tuna, avocado, spicy oil and chili sauce. I definitely recommend this roll. Masago sushi with quail egg: I love the way the yoke of the quail egg melts in my mouth. I don't think quail egg is for everyone. Spider Roll: it was OK.... I'm used to spiders rolls that are 3" in diameter. The one I got here was just 2"the most. I probably got a small soft shell crab. Shrimp Tempura: It was OK, nothing special at all. The shrimp was OK size. If I'm in the area again, I will definitely go here, but only if I'm craving Sushi. read more

We go to Tomodachi for often for lunch or dinner with friends. The restaurant always has a pleasant atmosphere and the food is excellent! We can sit outside on their patio on a sunny afternoon - especially good for friends who worry about Covid. Both inside and outside, service is reasonably quick but not rushed. It never seems to be noisy, even when the restaurant is fairly full. I like that because I want to be able to talk to my friends, not be overwhelmed with noise! The sushi is great but I usually order a "bento box" or combination plate. Lots of good food - in fact, my husband and I often share one dinner, with an order of sushi as well. There are a number of sushi places in the Conejo Valley. Tomodachi in Newbury Park is of but a few where I would recommend going for such. Open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, expect on Sundays which is exclusively dinner service. The sushi chefs here really understand the mechanics and anatomy of sushi rolls. The quality selection of rolls is extensive. The ingredients are fresh and the fish included in the rolls is only the best. All of these lead to a great tasting meal on your plate. My water glass was constantly empty, and we had a pileup of plates akin to multi car freeway accident. The food and sushi was all spot on. Our table loved the garlic edamame ($5). We tried the spicy tuna biscuit which was a specialty roll ($15), it got more thumbs up than down. The tempura appetizer was good, all the usual suspect and it was not too greasy ($7). Looking for a good sushi place via Yelp is hit-or-miss--unless you have sushi-savvy friends, it's quite difficult to judge the sushi quality because sushi always looks good in pictures, and not everyone has Jiro-level expertise when it comes to sashimi (not that I'm claiming I do, hence you may want to read this review with caution as well). Further, a nice ambiance could mean anything from the characteristics of a well-rounded restaurant with stellar food and a commitment to a memorable dining experience, to a place that disguises mediocre sushi in swanky interior decor. So as I was Yelping sushi around Newbury Park, I settled on Tomodachi not really knowing what to expect. The random strip mall location didn't help either, except that a large parking lot is always a plus (I come from SF where parking is a rare commodity). Fun fact: Tomodachi means "friends" in Japanese and indeed the servers are very friendly! Tomodachi has a good mix of traditional sushi, gimicky sushi rolls, and non-sushi items for those who come to sushi bars to eat chicken teriyaki. For 3 people, we mixed and matched a sashimi combo, a sushi combo, and the eel special roll. The presentation definitely exceeded my expectations: the sashimi combo had a beautiful orchid flower garnish and the artsy cucumber cut-outs, the sushi was arranged on a wooden board with a leaf which added authenticity bonus points, and the eel roll had photogenic avocado layers and came in a little dish that was very food-photography-friendly (I'm sick of those long plates for sushi because it's getting overused and also makes photos more difficult) The fish quality is quite good and the sashimi slices are thick, but what stood out the most was the unagi nigiri which I was fortunate to sample from the chef's sushi selection. Omg had I not been so stuffed from all the other food from my LA trip, I would have ordered multiple extra unagi nigiri. It was life-changing--the eel was grilled to crispy perfection, synergized by the roasted seaweed and thick, flavorful eel sauce. If you are a unagi fan, get this. If you are not, still get this!!! The eel special roll was memorable as well. Although there was less eel due to the composition of the California roll base, the generous portions of avocado toppings add a satisfying buttery taste, and the magical eel sauce made it tastier than any caterpillar roll I've ever had--it really is a special eel special roll. At ~$20/person for excellent sushi and sashimi, Tomodachi ranks near the top of my list for sushi in Socal. If this review and my non-Jiro-level credentials didn't convince you, look reaaallly hard at the unagi sushi in my photos and admire the unagi in its glory. read more

Who knew a place like this was hiding out in Newbury Park? I really can't remember the last time I was in a restaurant that was so proper and so trendy at the same time. I'm also feeling a little bad about having ripped on how they make the waitresses at P.F. Chang's wear neckties, because here it worked beautifully. The service was as professional in appearance as it was in its demeanor, with these black neckties over perfectly fitting white button-down blouses, and with very stylish black aprons that I'd originally mistaken for skirts over matching pants. I'd list the good and the bad, but I can't knock them on anything. Everything about this was as smooth as it can be. If I had to point to the two best things, they would be the styling and the attention to detail. In the attention to detail, that includes not just the look of things in the restaurant and the various garnishes and layout of the food, but also how they left the food to be eaten (like the cantaloupe slice they'd left with the rind still on but cut into cubes that could be picked up with the chopsticks) and the taste of the food itself. Even things like miso soup and cucumber salad which I thought always taste the same were noticeably better with a sort of complicated goodness, like the almost textured quality in the miso and the sweet yet tangy sauce that subtly had been mixed into the cucumber salad. The interior is beautiful from the dark brown high-backed wooden chairs next to the sushi bar and very clean, modern black tables to the colored abstract shape designs behind the sushi bar and sleek colored window shades. I said styling and not decor, though, because even the dishes were meticulously selected. For example, they had the first compartmentalized tray I've ever considered stylish, with a brilliant dark red interior and black exterior, and they matched it with the miso bowl but this also had a matching red brushstroke design on the outside. I'd gotten a dinner special with the sushi and the sashimi, where the chef picked four different pieces (I don't mean rolls, although they had a few) of sushi and six pieces of sashimi of three types. Like everything else, the sushi was spectacular, a sort of fleshy, tender delight. The restaurant and the parking lot are both large and rather vacant, too, so this is a great chance to take advantage of the sort of place everyone should be coming to but isn't. read more

I'm so sad to be writing this review. I've been coming here weekly for two years and unfortunately, things have really taken a turn. A few weeks ago, we asked for the complimentary cucumber salad that we've always been served and were told that they no longer do that. We would need to pay to get the cucumber salad. We were fine with paying but when we asked, it was a clear annoyance. The restaurant has fired 90% of their waitstaff which means long (20 minute) waits for drink orders. Let me just start off by saying that everyone always swears they know "the best sushi place". I thought I did too *guilty* until I came to Tomodachi. Ever since my fiancé first introduced me to this little gem (a little less than a year ago) we have been coming here religiously every week (sometimes even 2-3 times a week!). Yes, it's THAT good. Their fish is SO fresh -- Tomo drives down to LA and gets it from the fish market every morning -- and their service is top notch. It really feels like home every time we dine here.
