Wow, what an experience! the food was excellent, service wonderful and the atmosphere was cozy, it was raining outside. I took my eight year old granddaughter and it turns out this is her favorite place to eat. She had miso soup, fired dumplings and I think the cooked California roll (it had shrimp in it), she washed it all down with tropical bubble tea. I had the creamy crunch crab roll tasty and filling, avocado salad beautiful presentation, and the best sweet and sour soup I have ever had! we both shared and order of honey wings veryyyyy good!. I did not think about it until after the meal was over to ask it they except tap? (Thank goodness they did). The place is very roomy, it wasn't crowded at all (keep in mind it was a Monday evening). My granddaughter made sure she ordered mochi for dessert , I'd never had it so my granddaughter was nice enough to let me try hers it was refreshing and nice:). I must say it was kind of pricy, however they do have an all you can it menu and a lunch time menu that will help you stay withing a reasonable budget. This was a day that I didn't feel like cooking. We haven't had asian cuisine in quite sometime. I remember getting food from here years ago. So I knew what I wanted. They had the food piping hot and ready to go as promised. It also came in a nice reusable bag. We both got the hibachi dinner. I ordered the salmon and scallops. Which came with a salad, mushroom soup,brown tasty rice. Everything was so good. I also ordered vegetable lomein. Which was shareable. The salmon came with a lot of fresh vegetables. Sushi from here is SOOOO fresh and delicious! I like that 8 pieces are included in each roll order, even for the smaller rolls. The rice was cooked perfectly well. The waitress was really nice. She made our bubble tea less sweet and it was perfect. Honestly 10/10, no complaints. I was so pleased with it, I even came back and ordered dinner from them the same night! I had a great overall experience at Tomo Asian Cuisine. The restaurant was extremely clean, and the staff was very friendly and welcoming. The menu is extensive, offering everything from sushi and hibachi to appetizers and classic Asian dishes, which I appreciated. I ordered the chicken hibachi and hot and sour soup. Both were good, but leaned more toward a homemade flavor rather than the traditional hibachi or takeout taste. Not a bad thing--just something to keep in mind. Overall, I'd give it a solid 3 out of 5. It meets expectations in terms of cleanliness and service, and I'd return. I'm interested in trying more items on the menu next time. read more

While in Hanover, a desperate craving for sushi led me to Tomo Asian Cuisine, which just happened to be the closest sushi restaurant to where I was running errands. The funny thing: I did not order a traditional sushi meal. Fortunately, I stopped by Tomo right around lunchtime on a Saturday, which meant lunch specials. For my dining pleasure, I went with a Chicken Teriyaki Box (about 15 bucks), which comes your main protein, rice, small salad, California roll (4 pieces), and gyoza (2 pieces). Actually, I think a miso soup was included in the special. Overall, I thought my meal was great, especially for the price and portion size. Although I went with a lunch combo, I thought the regular (non lunch items) prices were pretty standard compared to other Japanese places in the area. Food aside, I had a nice dining experience because the service was welcoming, prompt, and friendly. The restaurant itself is pretty spacious and clean. Also, being in a medium to large shopping center provides a perfect opportunity to combine sushi therapy with retail therapy. Additionally, there is plenty of FREE parking in the shopping center, which makes life a little sweeter. Since I live a bit away from this location, I probably would visit Tomo again only if I'm in the immediate area. That said, it's nice to have a decent sushi option (ok, so I really didn't order sushi) just in case I happen to be in Arundel Mills...for whatever reason. read more

We hadn't been in here in a while so we thought we'd take my mother-in-law there because my wife liked the chicken teriyaki. We got seated right away, and the server was friendly. The first thing we realized they don't have a liquor license so you can't get any wine or mixed drinks. I ordered the Maki rolls and they were different from any other Maki rills from other Asian restaurant that I've had. Instead of getting the teriyaki chicken like we were going to we decided to get the hibachi dinner, but the vegetables were almost cold so we had to sit and wait for the server to come back so we could get the veggies heated up again. The soup was hot and the salad wasn't too bad. The chicken was a little bit on the spongy side but it was cooked well. My mother-in-law ordered the steak Hibachi dinner but didn't realize that it was sirloin steak and it was very hard to chew. My gripes: Perhaps I am not as versed as I think I am in sashimi, but I have never ever seen sashimi served alongside cubes of cheese. I am not a fan. The sashimi platter was served with cubes of salmon and tuna, accompanied by rice and cheese cubes. Umm, what? Additionally, the tuna didn't seem fresh at all -- it was a bit hard on the outside, but mushy on the inside -- as if it was sitting out. The sushi I ordered was not the greatest either. Spicy tuna with avocado, topped with crab. Sounds decent, right? NOT. It was garnished with this weird tasting sauce that did not complement it at all. Service was great. I would say this is the best Japanese restaurant we've been to around here and the price for everything is very reasonable. I'd definitely recommend it especially if you're close by. So I love sushi and I was looking for a nice sushi place close to my house and I'm so happy I stopped in for a bite. Conveniently located on the outside of Arundel Mills. Nice, clean establishment with a welcoming vibe. I was greeted with a smile and seated immediately. Our server was very nice and courteous. The food was affordable and the house wines were excellent. If you enjoy a sweet wine, I recommend the Plum Wine. So good I had to buy a bottle to go. The Scorpion King sushi was delicious and the portions were amazing. The quality was meh. I ordered the angry lobster roll and asked if it could just be wrapped in seaweed no rice. They initially said no, but I mentioned how other places usually accommodate. So she did ask and said it would cost $3 more. I am not sure why removing an ingredient would cost $3 more. Secondly, I ordered a bottle of wine. I typically do this if I'm at an establishment where I think their wine might be sitting out open for awhile and yet they would still serve it. The wine was awful. Though they have indoor dining, I placed a phone takeout order for this trip. This was my first visit. The male staff person who took the order was friendly, professional and patient. After taking the order, he projected a pickup time of 15 minutes. Since I had never been there, I arrived early and waited inside. This afforded an opportunity to see the interior of the restaurant. It is a smaller scale eat-in dining establishment located within a retail location along with a variety of other businesses. The restaurant had a nice ambiance with a clean appearance. As for seating, there was booth, individual tables, as well as some seats at the bar. The menu is standard but features many options from which to choose; it features everything from sushi to kitchen entrees and then some. They offer takeout and dine-in lunch and dinner options. The location is open for business daily with parking that is open and ample. I ordered California rolls and Shrimp Tempura, which were both good. The sushi was fresh and neatly packaged. The Thai tea was refreshing and a little sweet but still tasty. I would definitely order everything again. Additionally, the menu is so vast that I would try some other menu items. The bento box had a little bit of everything with dumplings that were delicious. The sweet potato and spicy salmon rolls were okay but nothing exciting. The sweet mango roll was just that- sweet with mango on the inside and outside. Presentation was gorgeous and it was good if you are a sweet lover. Decided to give these guys a try for lunch, since I work nearby and saw they have a lot of lunch specials. I ordered the three sushi roll combo for $14.95 plus tax. I chose the Philadelphia, Boston, and AAC rolls, and the lunch combo comes with choice of soup or salad. Good takeout presentation and good value for the price! However I was disappointed they did not have more variety of rolls as part of the lunch special. The rolls I tried were good, but a little boring to me. I did not see any soft shell crab, only shrimp. One of the pieces did not even have any fish, just crunchy tempura bits in it. Very disappointing for the cost. Upon entering, the layout was welcoming - Very clean & spacious. The sushi bar is directly in front of you, so you see that the Japanese offerings are very fresh. I was seated and greeted by a very nice server. She came over, and asked if I wanted something to drink and left to go get it. She returned in no time and asked if I was ready. I was still reading the menu so I asked for a couple minutes. She then *disappeared*. All the staff that were running around were nowhere to be seen. I waited patiently... about 10-15 mins later, the server appears and asks what I'd like. That didn't sit well with me bc they were not busy... AT ALL. On to the meal. Overall takeaway: Flavor is not something that is stressed here. Presentation is nice but flavor... not so much. Allow me to explain. 1. I started with Arnold Palmer, which is always a hit!!! SCORE!!! Appetizers: 2. Fried Calamari- ZERO FLAVOR!! I've never had calamari that had no flavor before. Maybe calamari is always blandly fried but there's always something put on top (lemon, S&P, a glaze, sweet Thai chili sauce, fish sauce drizzle, a sprinkling of spring onions... something). This appetizer had nothing. Additionally, the calamari were the size of massive onion rings. When calamari are served as tiny rings the outside gets cooked and the inside gets cooked and it just pops in your mouth and it's a fantastic experience. These onion ring sized calamari for fried super crispy on the outside and inside were juicy, huge, rubbery rings. They were quite wet. When the calamari rings are small and you can eat them quickly say some words and move onto the next. With every bite of these onion rings I had to chew chew chew chew chew and chew some more because this thickening of squid simply wasn't fried in any way. Just the outside was. It was too rubbery for my taste. Now, if you enjoy huge pieces of boiled rubbery fish, you're gonna love this dish. I'm not one of those people. VERDICT... FAIL! 3. Next, was for the Crab Rangoon - This is a common appetizer on many Asian menus. It's a deep fried wonton stuffed with cream cheese and imitation crab meat. It's always fun because it's formed in a star shaped pillow with a creamy flavored center. These however, were more like flattened cream cheese filled wontons. My initial thought, upon their arrival was, akin to the 80s/90s 'Wendy's' commercial tagline which was, 'WHERE's THE CRAB (beef)'?!?! (Only if ur a certain age, will you get that reference). VERDICT... FAIL! On to the main dishes. I noticed that the table next to me had dishes with lots of rice and vegetables and meat and noodles. They looked delicious. They were shiny and colorful and I was excited. I do admit however, I absolutely love sushi. So that was direction I went in. Too bad bc those dishes looked delicious. Next time... The Sushi chosen was: 3a) Alaska Roll (8pcs): Salmon, Cucumber & Avocado. Clean, fresh, simple, creamy... DELICIOUS!!! SCORE!!! 3b) Salmon Avocado Roll (8pcs): Also clean, simple and creamy... DELICIOUS!!! SCORE!!! 3c) Japanese Lasagna (8pcs): Baked California roll with Spicy Mayo & Masago. Now I have had Japanese Lasagna before where you can select the protein you'd like (I always choose salmon). This version, however, is only a California roll. Regardless, this was the most flavorful roll out of the three rolls ordered. YUMMMMINESS!!! SCORE!!! Overall impression: GOOD - Come for the entrees and to have a good convo. Eh. I was not overly impressed. Perhaps it's just me. I think my family likes this place in particular because their basic rules are just that basic. I wasn't impressed with my first visit as the gentleman forgot my daughters order because he for whatever reason didn't write everything down. The service is always good at least the two times that I've been however there's something lacking about their sushi selection. However if I could give this place 3 1/2 stars I would because it's clean meat and your food does come out in a timely manner however they need to do a better job of just writing things down and maybe put some pictures on the menu so we can see what we are getting. I was not a fan of their veggie gyoza. They tasted like something I could've bought at Trader Joe's. However I did agree with my husband in that their bento boxes do look legit. I love sashimi and nigiri. The fish was super fresh. The only thing was that didn't have bluefin tuna and no uni. Server said the uni didn't arrive yet. I started off with the soft shell crab which was just okay. The batter was packed in way too thick. I particularly like light & crispy. For my main meal, I ordered the toro, salmon belly, yellowtail belly and scallop sashimi, sweet shrimp, big eye tuna, and mackerel nigiri. All was good. I also ordered the miso soup which to me didn't have enough balance of miso. It was towards the bland side. The downside is that I had to ask if they had Toro. The server didn't let me know the other special fish they had that wasn't on the menu. I happened to notice on their board near the sushi station which my seat wasn't even close to it. I feel if you are a server and a customer asks about toro or another kind of fish not on the menu that means this customer maybe interested in hearing about what other fish you have to offer besides your basic fish which is on the menu. Tomo is a family owned business which are my favorites. I was pleasantly surprised upon entering to see the modern, beautiful interior. It made me feel like I was visiting Japan without leaving home! Onto the food: we ordered the chicken yakitori and kani naruto as appetizers which were both really tasty. The chicken yakitori came out with a perfect char flavor and the kani naruto was super refreshing! Highly recommend! We then ordered a salmon bento box and an American eagle roll. The plating was absolutely stunning, I mean they truly go above and beyond with the aesthetics here! Made for really great insta worthy shots. The salmon bento was definitely a hit - the salmon was flavorful, juicy, and flakey! It also came with so many sides like tempura, shumai, and a California roll (I mean talk about bang for your buck!). The American eagle roll was really fresh and delicious as well! The menu is truly so expansive that there is something for everyone with options from Japanese, Thai, and Chinese cuisines. Definitely a great spot for date night, groups, and families! Always in search of new culinary adventures nearby, the family decided to visit Tomo. I had to stay home due to a BAD cold, but they brought me some food and I did ask about their experience. So this is a hybrid review ;) Family: Very nice place, good service, clean, well-appointed bathroom. As others have noted, they don't have their liquor license yet but SIL says the bar looks nice. Me: OMG THE FOOD!!! They brought home a bit of everything: salmon from a bento, "fiery bird in a nest", "sexy jalapeno" and drunken noodles with chicken. So. The salmon was perfection. Moist, tender, not overcooked, with a drizzle that tasted a bit like maple syrup/teriyaki. Fiery bird is bits of chicken with kale and was just exactly my level of spice - any more would have been agh! I can't! and less would have been too bland. Sexy jalapenos are hard to describe. I make jalapeño poppers from scratch at home, but I have never thought to stuff them with all the goodness they do. Drunken noodles are pretty standard but I must say these had a good balance of seasonings. Can't speak to the price paid, but I will say that parking in this little center is ample and free, it's easy to get to, and the family said easy to be seated and served even on a Friday night at 6:30 pm. My new favorite sushi spot! My boyfriend and I came here recently in attempts to make healthy choices on our diet. We needed a night out and sushi can be healthy, right? Well, after looking at the menu for a bit, we decided to do something we have been wanting to for years now...order a sushi boat! Regardless we were promptly sat down and ordered some tea. The tea was a simple tea bag of jasmine but it was calming. The place itself is quite spacious. It seems to have been something before the sushi restaurant, but I'm not sure what. Our server was nice and didn't seem to judge us too harshly when we ordered the boat for three. We were served miso soup and salad beforehand. Both were standard like what you get from a hibachi place. Nothing mind blowing but still tasty. It took a bit (as expected) but we finally got our boat and we were not disappointed! There was a nice mix of sashimi and nigiri plus a few rolls. The rolls were probably the least special part. One was a California roll - I would have preferred to just not have it. It was so boring, but I don't usually order that roll to know if it was standard. I loved the array of fish we got. The flavors were all so different! I wish they left us with a sheet of what was what. Or at least told us. We were left guessing. All in all, I would definitely get it again. And we had leftovers!
