This place is a hidden gem. Everything we had was amazing. Tommy helped us out and he was so friendly and inviting. Absolutely the best pizza, subs, and garlic knots in east county. The garlic knots are OUT OF THIS WORLD. Fresh, soft and doughy on the inside with a perfect crisp on the bottom. Fresh chunks of real garlic mixed with fresh grated parm. The Works Pizza was amazing as well. Great topping selection, crust was great, sauce was perfect; not too sweet and plenty of flavor. Not overly cheesy. The Italian torpedo had greta flavor, tons of meat and cheese, and a really delicious dressing on it. Bread was fresh. You can tell that everything is made with only the freshest ingredients and with all the love! We came at an off time so things were quiet and our order didn't take too long at all. I'm guessing it was the owner in the back cooking, and he was teaching the gal in the front. She was super friendly and chatty with my little girl who was with me. I really wanted to like this place, but I'm just not sure if this experience was a one off or my expectations were higher. Keep in mind, the prices listed on the website and Yelp menu area are outdated. The price in the Yelp/GrubHub and Slice online order is accurate. Purchased a 14-inch, Works Pizza around Tuesday 6:10pm, picked up at 6:30pm. I was the only customer, got in, asked for my order, and picked up my pizza quickly. The front staff was friendly, handed me my pizza, and I was on my way. It smelled great in the back of the car, and I couldn't wait to dig in. Came home in 5 minutes, opened the box, looks great! Took my first bite, and felt disappointed. Yes there were plenty of toppings, cheese was warm and melty, but the rest felt...just ok. The center (tip of the slice) was loaded with cheese and toppings and flopped/drooped over, but the end/crust was dense, doughy/tough and overly crispy. I normally love eating the crust without any dips or anything, but I had to drench it in ranch just to get a few bites out. Once again, I'm just not sure if this was a one-off, but I honestly chose this because of the high-praising reviews, down the street, and a local business. Pizza was edible. Worst meal ever. For $60 bucks!!! Where do I even start....veggie calzone; TONS of ricotta cheese and black olives. Mushrooms, a few specs of green bell pepper and a little red onion. No flavor whatsoever. Pepperoni pizza; husband said it was liking eating cardboard. Antipasto salad; the meat tastes like it sat out in the kitchen all day. Simply delicious pizza! So, let me start by saying I first met Tommy when he worked at Leggio's in El Cajon and later bought it. Tommy later built a new restaurant named Tommy's. Tommy has deep family roots in the Italian Restaurant business going back to the 50s. Many years ago Tommy's on 2nd st. for whatever reason disappeared. But, fortunately for Pizza and Sub lovers they are back and well worth seeking out. Starting with a light and perfectly chewy crust, a perfectly rich, tangy sauce and high quality cheese, your pie is ready for your favorite toppings. My favorite is their homemade sausage. Tommy's son Sal, who's been involved in the business as a cook and manager for many years, is soon to become owner, to carry on what his dad started so long ago, with great food and ownership that cares about the product they put out. Their grand opening is soon; in the meantime: Hours: Sun-Thurs 11:00 am - 8:00 pm Fri-Sat 11:00 am - 9:00 pm They will change once they have their grand opening. We started with the Greek salad, we ate in. It seems like the owner likes fresh and yummy food. Served 4. Then we had pizza - my husband is half-Italian and heard about this place through Facebook. We had mushroom and sausage. His eyes grew big. It's delicious!! The dough is just right - not sweet, thin like a good New York pizza, and the sauce tasted fresh. Cheese just enough - not too much; mushrooms fresh and the flavor was great; sausage was "so good". Sodas are $2.69 each fountain. Choices are in the photos. Fantastic pizza and subs. I found Tommy's when I wanted some mom and pop style pizza, but didn't want one of the many pizza shops with "giant" in their name. The interior is small and humble. It's not some huge sit down restaurant. I ordered The Works pizza which was awesome! It was absolutely covered in toppings and the cheese was melty, hot, and delicious. I was really interested in trying the Italian Torpedo too, but I controlled myself and told myself another time. Well the next day, my wife and I finished a hike and wanted sandwiches. I said let's go try Tommy's sandwiches. We went in and ordered an Italian Torpedo and Italian Tuna Sandwich. The stuff in the sandwich was fresh and superb. The tuna was fresh and the Italian meats were flavorful. But what I want to highlight is the bread. The outer surface of the bread had a nice crunch, which is why I was really surprised how soft the rest of the bread was. It was excellent. I believe the bread was brushed with a little butter too? There was also some oil or dressing in the sandwich that had so much flavor. I highly recommend the pizza and sandwiches. This will be my go-to pizza joint when I want a supreme/combo pizza. read more

Second time here and it didn't disappoint. if you like that newfangled Italian sloppy pizza places that are very popular now this is not for you.. I got the Works. All the pizza places I used to go to have now closed and this is the last one around. I used to like Paesano's in North Park and Capparells between downtown and bankers hill but they closed, so a trip to East County is now required. read more
