My favorite part of our long-awaited trip to Tommy's Cafe was far and away the baked goods. I loved my chocolate long john and the cinnamon rolls we got for later were stellar. We were able to to find seating right away and if our teenaged waiter was less than enthusiastic and often absent, the quality of the food and the friendliness of Tommy, himself, at check-out made up for it. I had my eye on that aforementioned donut, but also make it my mission to try the pancakes at every breakfast place I visit. The '88 Special fit the bill perfectly; it comes with three silver dollar pancakes, in addition to bacon, sausage, and an egg. The pancakes were good, not great, and next time I'll probably forgo them in favor of a benedict or biscuits and gravy dish. My boyfriend got Cajun-style B&G and they were really good. I really liked the taste of chorizo in the gravy. So glad I finally had the opportunity to try this West-side staple! Even though my coffee cup was frequently empty, I loved the atmosphere, the food, and especially the pastries. Hopefully next time we'll get one of the phenomenal, long-serving waitresses of QC Times lore. read more

We've driven past this place numerous times and after reading Yelp reviews, we decided to give it a shot. I wasn't expecting anything spectacular, given the location and the exterior of the building. The service was great. Our server was busy but she made time to do it all- talk to guests, buss tables, take orders, etc. After all this she still made sure our order was correct and that everything was great. I had the biscuits and gravy and my boyfriend had the steak skillet. At first bite, everything was good. Biscuits and gravy were a little plain, nothing great about them. Nothing horrible either. The boyfriend said he liked his food. The prices were incredibly low! Can't beat that. All I can say is... thank god we were less than a minute away from home. It was a mad dash to the bathroom and the boyfriend and I had to fight for who got to go first. Like I said, at first bite, the food was decent. However, it was a different story when we left. Nasty. I ordered the country benedict thinking they might ruin the classic poached egg benedict, and they managed to ruin scrambled eggs. Asked for butter and powdered sugar for my pancakes on two different occasions and both times did not get what I asked for. This downtown Davenport gem is amazing. The food is always good, the prices are reasonable and the staff gives service with amazing grace. I attend their pretty much every other week with a group of friends and we all love the place. For anyone having food issues (gluten, allergies, or intolerances) I spoke with Tommy the other day. As long as you make him aware he keeps a separate grill and uses a separate pan for making meals. I even have a friend with issues with canola oil and he is willing to work with him. Went on a Sunday and they were full, and managed to get us in within 5 minutes. Service is so speedy about sitting families and doubles. As soon as we walked in we were greeted by smiles which started off the morning amazing. The employees are so nice and funny. As soon as we were seated our waitress came right over to take our drinks and then our order. The pancakes are cooked to perfection, along with the omelettes. Even though they were completely full, our food came out shortly after with almost no wait. The prices are extremely cheap (about $6 for pancakes and sausage).
