We parked in the back and walked through the back patio and were escorted by a very friendly server who knew the history of the building (impressed). She led us to the front door. Then we had to climb some very steep stairs. For the average individual it wasn't bad. But we had two seniors with us that found the steps challenging. Once inside we were greeted by the hostess and a very not so good odor (we almost walked out, it smelled musty and very old, our thoughts were the bathrooms. These need to be renovated badly). But once you get into the dining room there was no more smell. Tino was our server for the evening he did an amazing job. We ordered classic pasta (honestly it had good flavor but the sauce was very watery), the Duck (that was very good), and the Prime Rib (that was huge, that would be perfect for two people). We finished dinner and proceeded to go outside to the patio (mind you this is in January, when the weather is perfect for sitting el fresco) and had dessert. We ordered the Banana's Foster (Santana did an excellent performance, best part of the dessert) or Platanos Cajeta (huge difference) and the Flan. They were both good. This was a Saturday night and they had a duet playing acoustic guitar music (this helped top off the evening). We (my wife and I) were first seated in a tight spot between a very large party and a wall, with a narrow aisle for the server to pass through separating us. After being seated, we realized this spot was not for us and asked to be reseated. Good thing, too, since moments later a player arrived to play corny Christmas tunes at a piano *immediately * adjacent (less than 3 feet away) to our original table. Nobody had asked us if we minded giving up our night's conversation in favor of the piano. I'm sure some folks would've loved it, but you need to ask before sitting people that close to the music. Anyway, glad we moved. If all else had gone well, I wouldn't be bothering with this review. But. The timing was terrible: we ordered cocktails before dinner. When they arrived, our waiter took our order - and within two minutes appeared with our soup and salad. My cream of cauliflower soup was great, but did not mix with my drink. What ever happened to enjoying a drink *before* dinner? My subsequent caesar salad was as good as any I've had, but when dinner arrived my wife's steak and baked potato were barely above room temperature. She also mentioned that her filet was incredibly dry. My New York strip was tasty, though. Oh, but the wine: we each ordered glasses of red, but both were *ice* cold. Like really really cold. So we slogged through the meal, but as you might imagine we were ready pretty soon to write it off as an off night and move on. So we placed our utensils on our plates, pushed our plates a tiny bit away, and sat back a bit so the server could see we were finished. Which he might have, if on any of the six subsequent times that he passed near our table he had bothered to even glance at us. Finally, we had to get another server to request that our server bring our check. So he finally shows up asking what we need, not bringing the check as we requested of his colleague. I again asked for the check mentioned to him that as a server it is useful to look around at your tables whenever you pass through the room. He did not apologize. Look, this is usually a great place. I'm sure we'll be back on some future visit to McAllen. Tonight, though, not so much. I hope the management is paying attention to this and that this was truly just a rare off-night and not a sign of declining service. At this price, you need to do better.

Sounds good in principle. But the proof is in the pudding as they say, or the food and how good it is. They start the meal with an assortment of fresh house-made tortilla chips and salsas that range from a "pretty warm" pico de gallo to a "blazing hot" sauce made with habaneros. They also brought us so charro beans, "on the house" which when mixed with a little lime and the aforementioned salsa were maybe the best part of the meal. I don't think I've had any charros their equal. I'd come back just for them if nothing else. I had the Chicharron Ribeye on Molchahete which is a rib eye steak, cut in bite sized cubes, seared then placed atop some lettuce and fresh house-made guacamole, served with fresh, house made corn tortillas. (You had me at house-made corn tortillas!). The steak bites were a little overcooked for my tastes and, if I'm being honest, the steak was at best, a USDA Select Grade based on a lack of tenderness. I'd hope that for the price they'd use at least USDA Choice or higher grade. Anyway it wasn't very tender but the flavor was ok. In total there was enough steak for three or four nice sized tacos with really good guacamole, some onion, cilantro and lime to squeeze on top. The wife ordered RibEye Enchiladas which were, according to her, just ok. They were smothered in a heavy sauce and even heavier layer of melted cheese, detracting from the flavor of the ribeye. Neither of us were that impressed with our entrees. The sides were better than the mains. That's never a good thing. Our friends split an order of RibEye Panchos, which in most of the rest of the world are known as nachos - tortilla chips, chunks of ribeye steak, cheese, salsa, etc. They seemed to enjoy their meal and had leftovers to carry out. Our server, a sweet young gal was exceptional at her job, very informative about the restaurant and let us know that after five years in the same location, they would soon be moving, although the new location was at present, a secret. Our drinks were never empty and she offered us more charros, chips and salsa...whatever we wanted. My entree was $19.99 and the wife's was $18.99. Adding in my iced tea plus tax brought the total to a bit over $46 which isn't horrible, especially seeing we're talking ribeye steak, but, for this steak, it's quality and quantity, perhaps a little high. They do offer a Sunday Brunch, which we may try in the future. Perhaps they had a bad batch of tough steaks, I don't know. I'll certainly give them another visit before crossing them off my list in order to be fair. Here's to looking forward to that next visit.
