This is the second time in less than a month we've had a bad experience with Tomato Jake's. Wanted to give them another try because ya know sometimes it can be a miss with producing quality pizza. When I order single slices they are amazing! But the past two times we ordered a pie. It has been beyond horrible. The first time our pizza wasn't fully cooked. I mean the crust was still pale. It wasn't fully cooked at all no browning (not burning) but the pizza dough wasn't brown at all. Now today was just craziness. The pizza was PAPER THIN! I mean I could pretty much see the sauce through the pizza. I couldn't believe it! For $15 we honestly could've gotten a better pie from Papa Johns but we again wanted to try and support a local business. But twice we have been disappointed by the result. read more

Hey, y'all...it's been a year, and I now visit Tomato Jake's weekly on Trivia Night, and I gotta give an updated review. First, compared to every other Southpoint pizza joint, this place is it. I always order the combo deal that includes a slice, house salad, and drink, so I've tried almost all of their pies and never been disappointed. My absolute favorite is the "Spicy Clucker," which is a buffalo chicken tender pizza. On to my next point, TRIVIA. Yeah, after many disappointing losses as a team of two, my husband and I finally made some friends (lol), and we get a decent score each week. Not enough to win, but enough to make the game enjoyable. Sparky, the quiz master, is a really fun, wholesome guy. He makes the game challenging, for sure, but it's a good experience no matter where we place. Third, and the most important in my opinion, is the atmosphere of this place. It's always a laid-back, good time. Everyone is really friendly here--the owner, employees, and customers alike. Since we go every week, we feel like we've become part of a big ole trivia fam. It's a good feeling. So, anyway, to summarize this novella, give Tomato Jake's a chance, especially if you like friendly people and difficult trivia. read more

I have to disagree with Ben's review (sorry!). I drove by tonight looking for a reasonable stop for dinner and Tomato Jake's fit the bill. It looked clean and friendly - there were a few tables occupied at 7:00 on a Sunday. More than a standard pizza place, they have a few signs up for a Wednesday night trivia contest (not my thing) and they get comedy too. And of course, pizza, subs and sandwiches with a selection of a half dozen or so standard bottled beers. I was a little overwhelmed at the number of choices for pizzas, finally narrowing down to the Whitey White, which was, of course, a white pizza with mozzarella, romano, feta, and asiago, plus garlic. I also had a cheesy bread to start and a Corona, which was served with a lime wedge. ($3.75! Eeek!) The bread was brought to me quickly and I had to wait a moment for it to cool down. Very yummy with a small bowl of marinara. A few minutes later, the pizza. Delicious. Plenty of garlic plus the bite of the feta cheese on a thin-ish crust. I had the "regular" and took more than half of it home. I was very pleased with the choice. Good stuff. My friend got a side salad, and I got a slice and salad special, and I was impressed that their marketing was correct. -- everything was super fresh, healthy, homemade from scratch, and top-notch! My lasagna slice pizza was a new one for me, and very yummy, with the ricotta and meatballs and very light on the sauce. My house salad was excellent, as I said, and I felt it was great value considering the local fresh ingredients and fast-casual vibe. Imagine an updated Pizza Inn booths style setting, but more hip, with a traditional point and serve slice rack, and counter service. I mean, you know, fast casual. We've been coming here since they opened and we've never been disappointed. Their food is consistent, their prices are decent, and it's always clean. I love their rickety-rick-saw salad, and I appreciate that it comes in two sizes. Their Caesar is also very good. They offer a lot of choices for pizza by the slice, and it's all good. Their wings are meaty and well-cooked but if you order the hot they aren't spicy enough; they are better than most places around here. This place is alright, nothing to ride home about. We decided to try this place because we were nearby and craving pizza. We ordered 2 XL cheese pizzas and a XL specialty burger pizza. It came out to $63.... way to much in my opinion for pizza. The burger pizza itself was $27 and it wasn't anything mind blowing, definitely not worth the price. There wasn't that much meat on it, didn't see any specialty cheese sauce they mentioned in description or ranch. For $27 the pizza should be covered in meat. Glad we tried another place in the area, but we definitely won't be going back. Back in the before times we used to stop here for trivia nights, those were the days! Now we only get to enjoy getting takeout. Pro tip order before you're starving, that way you can reheat the pizza when it gets home, this is the kind of pizza that is tasty hot but doesn't fare as well once lukewarm. It smells heavenly in the oven, really sets the mood for dinner! The true star of this place is their wings, I've had the lemon pepper, mild and teriyaki. The lemon pepper are excellent, there's a ton of extra sauce so you can coat them to your heart's content and they're nicely crispy and not oily. The ranch is homemade and delicious, we always make sure to use it to the last drop. Excellent on pepperoni pizza! They use the extra large thin pepperoni which my toddler approved of, so not too spicy either. This is a local spot near the southpoint target and they offer some good deals, we like to get a large pizza with salad. The food here is great but I'll never give this business my money again. I ate there on 6/25/23 right at opening for lunch. The owner (I can only assume it was the owner, large man, gray hair) was there working, yelling repeatedly at his young female staff, demanding apologies from them for who knows what but he literally told them to say "I'm sorry" to him. He then sat at a table barking out orders at them and interrupted our lunch at least four times with the yelling and complaining. It was disgusting the way he talked to these young people. The food was pretty good, it took a while to get out to us though. I have it 3 stars because the owner was extremely loud complaining the entire time we were here about this and that. He also took a personal phone call while out on the floor where food is being prepped to take out. The girl that was hosting, she was nice, had a slight attitude at first since it was our first time here and asked her to repeat the name of the food I was getting. The main thing that bothered me was when we walked in, no one greeted us and there was only 3 customers in here, not busy for dinner time on a Thursday. The cashier had her really long hair down, whipping around the food and prep stations. She did put it up when another couple came in after us but the fact that it was down up until then in a food establishment was just kind of off setting. Honestly the food was pretty good, giant portions. One calzone definitely could feed 2-3 people. Paid $30 for two calzones, but again, they're huge. My biggest complaint was while I was trying to talk and enjoy my dinner with my partner, we couldn't hear ourselves over the owners booming voice complaining about everything under the sun. I visited Tomato Jakes today in Renaissance pkwy. And ordered a 8 piece bbq wings. I viewed the menu and the wings were listed as 12.00 (look below) and when I ordered them my total was 15.00 (see the receipt below) I kindly asked the cashier how much are your 8 piece and he looked to his supervisor(Cody) for support. Cody then says they are 15.00 do you want your money back? I said but your menu says 12.00 he stated well we haven't updated our menu and we typically have a sign that says our cost have gone up, but we took it down, so do you want your money bk I said no I would like the wings but if they were more than what the MENU says I should have been notified at ordering that is false advertisement. I asked him to see the sign? Cody replies we have taken them down to show this special that we now have. I asked you are not willing to return the 2.00 as listed on the menu he said no it is what it is. I asked for an entire refund and asked for the manager he said I am the manager and the owner just left Im NOT going to give you his personal cell. I said I only asked for contact information, what ever that looks likes, he said his card/number is over there. Of course the number on the card is to the store. Lol I understand that prices have gone up as everything, NOT NOTIFYING a customer prior to ringing up a TOTALLY different cost is so UNFAIR. I would have been fine if someone would have apologized and or notified me prior to ordering that the cost on the menu was WRONG. I will be emailing the OWNER shortly. The draft beer was supposed to be local beer which wasn't, resulting in 4 stars rather than 5. What really won me over was this places community involvement. Everything here is locally sourced and non GMO which definitely adds to quality. Tomato Jakes donates a minimum of $10,000 to local schools as well as provides left over pizza and food to locals and the homeless. Today I came in and ignored for 5 mins as I stood at the register just a few feet from workers behind the counter. I saw the owner, Glen, look over his shoulder and saw me but continued to work. No hello, no just a minute, no nothing. I asked can I place an order. Keep in mind, I have a sinus infection and barely have a voice so it was choppy whisper...nothing near loud. He came over and rudely said what you need, very irritated. I said I just want my order taken. He goes off and start yelling. I literally like "wait, what's happening, are you having a bad day?". He said yes and I said Ok well so am I, it's ok. Yall I really tried to reset the conversation, leaving room for grace. He walks off saying something that I can't remember (cuz I'm in shock) but it ended in "We're busy, you can leave!" He walks away talking about customer being rude ya ya ya. Nobody in is the restuarant yall. You can take a moment from food prep to assist a customer. He was just refilling sauces. I asked his name and he's says I'm Glen the owner and shrug his shoulder like what you gone do. One of the cook came over and tried to take my order but I was over it. I'm like look we all struggling out here, all because he's the owner don't mean he can be rude. I say all this to say...I eat at this place quiet often since I moved to Durham. I always try to go to local business/restaurants in Durham, especially during the pandemic. It's not ok to yell at and/or speak rudely to customer. If he's that "busy" he could have simply said we're not taking in-person orders at the moment. This is not ok. I never post about businesses on social media. And I usually try to resolve the issue directly with the business before leaving a bad review. But Glen made it clear that since he's the owner then deal with whatever treatment he's giving or leave. We hadn't been to this place before. Reviews seemed pretty mixed but it's close to our house so we thought we'd give it a try. We ordered the Tuesday special - XL two topping pizza for $16. I also ordered some lemon pepper wings to try. They rang our order wrong, not giving us the special price ($3 more) but corrected it when it was brought to their attention. I had ordered the wings extra crispy and flats only (I'm weirdly picky). They had drumsticks and flats and wasn't crispy but they were super hot and I think the final dash of lemon is what made them lose their crispness. They were very tasty and lemony and came with a couple of celery sticks and yummy blue cheese dressing. The pizza came out and was covered in sausage and peppers. The sausage wasn't super flavorful but the pizza overall was great. Table herbs for the pizza would have been nice but overall we were pleased. Not gourmet, but good and reasonably priced. Tomato Jake's has a piece of my heart because they have Rio Rancho pizza (tomatoes, bacon and ranch). Ranch dressing? On pizza? Well, what did you eat at 2 a.m. in college? Tomato Jake's is a good place to step in and grab a slice of pizza after shopping at Southpoint, or before the movies, when the food court just isn't hitting the spot. It's one of those places where you walk up and see the pizza, order it, and they heat it up, so the slices are not always "fresh out of the oven," but they're still pretty tasty. They have big slices in funky flavors for $2.75 to $3.25. I haven't branched out beyond the pizzas, but they also have subs, sandwiches, calzones, pasta, and salads. One negative about this place - if you get a craving at home, the area that they'll deliver to is fairly small. read more

The only reason this gets 3 stars is because the wings I ordered were delicious. I ordered garlic fries and they were good too but the calzone I ordered was terrible. The calzone was pretty typical taste-wise, nothing special, but it was so greasy and runny. The second I went to cut it, what I assume was juice from the meat overflowed the pan. By the time I finished cutting it completely, most of the calzone was sitting in a puddle of its own liquid. This place will be my new pizza joint of choice whenever I'm in the Southpoint mall area. Fantastic NY style pizza comparable to Johnny's Pizza in the Triangle. Their largest size is 18 inches, and they've got a creative selection of specialty pizzas which are worth coming for. The setup is you come in and place your order at the register at the front and then seat yourself anywhere. They've got numerous tv's situated around the restaurant to allow customers to catch up on any sports entertainment. They've got a self service drink station area containing a freestyle soda machine which is awesome. My family of four ordered an 18 inch large half Green Monster and half Whitney's White - that's right folks they allow you to do half flavors on your pizza here which is a thing of beauty. Both flavors were very tasty though I enjoyed the Green Monster more with its heaping of spinach and garlic pesto feta flavor profile. We also ordered an appetizer of hot wings which were pretty good as well. Overall a very positive experience here, and I will be back to try out their other specialty flavors! read more
