I was pleasantly surprised how good the food was here! Great location. There is definitely something for everybody. For my drink I got the mango coolada smoothie which I highly recommend, it was delicious and refreshing. We tried the California burrito which was scrumptious. All the meats are flavorful. I tried the falafel tacos. I enjoyed the taste and consistency of the falafel. They fry them fresh to order. Lastly we tried the nachos with pork carnitas which at that point I was well beyond full but I could not resist. You had to roll me out of there afterwards. I would definitely come back. I'm not sure how long this establishment has been open, but I'm so disappointed I have not tried them sooner. Their food is amazing. I order online, and it's ready by the time I arrive. I've had the same thing twice, which was the shrimp enchiladas with salsa roja (spicy). You have a choice of black beans or pinto beans, cilantro lime rice or dirty rice. I chose the dirty rice along with the pinto beans. It also came with a lemonade, because of the total. $22 for the enchiladas along with chips and guac. A little pricey but well worth it flavor wise. The lemonade was sweet and tangy. And I absolutely love their guacamole. It's an amazing portion, topped with a little bit of pico and the chips are freshly made. They have a pretty extensive menu. I believe they offer vegan ground "beef", but it isn't listed on the app I use to place my order. I highly recommend this establishment. Perhaps I will branch off and try something else the next time but their enchiladas are pretty tasty! read more

There are so many options for good food in New Haven. This is not one of them. I ordered shrimp tacos a and the shrimp was orange and greasy and not fresh. The cold topping overloaded the tacos and made a cold goo. I felt sick immediately after eating and it ruined my plans for shopping and strolling in the city. Also, it was surprisingly expensive for how cheap it looks and tastes. If you have a car, you can get better $ tacos at the long wharf food trucks. If you don't have a car Te Amo Tequila and Geronimos have better $$ tacos and TexMex. If you don't really want tacos, but are lazy, take an car to mamouns and have some lamb shawarma. I can't believe I lived next to Tomatillo for a whole year before finally trying it because of the bad reviews on here deterring me. Please do not make the same mistake I did, this place is actually great!!! My partner and I got their nachos twice this week since we previously struggled to find any decent nachos in the area. The first time was perfect, and the second time was somehow even better. We are so pleasantly surprised at the quality of ingredients used, plus they were so generous with the amount of toppings! The chicken was juicy and flavorful, the guacamole was especially fresh, and the cheese they use is SO. GOOD. Plus the chips themselves are perfect. Besides the exceptional nachos, the employees are kind and welcoming. When my partner went to pick up the nachos just 10 minutes before they closed, the two people working there were so sweet and pulled out a chair for him to sit even though they were putting everything away for closing. Plus they gave us extra guacamole! The love they put into the food they make really shows. If you're in the mood for nachos, please just go to Tomatillo and don't waste your money anywhere else. What primarily makes it the weakest of the local "fast casual" taco joints is having food show up cold when the delivery itself was ultra-fast, so this can't be blamed on the delivery driver or distance. Flavors that would probably be a decent cheap enchilada don't meld when half the ingredients are straight-from-the-fridge cold and the other half are lukewarm. Green sauce is sweet, rather than spicy, so adjust expectations accordingly. "Pinto beans" appear to be straight from the can, unseasoned. The rice is nice. But how do you make tres leches cake that's dry? How? Literally all I hoped for was a nice squishy low-end enchilada reaching my plate with minimal effort on my part. Ordered a BYOB (Build Your Own Burrito) today. Tomatillo is like the SUBWAY for burritos, you get to see them making it as you tell them what you'd like. Everything looked good, but honestly I felt the burrito was a bit bland, lacking flavor. Pork was also dry. Total was $8.19 (with tax). You can a bigger, better tasting burrito in New Haven down on Cedar Street at a couple of the food carts there. Tomatillo doesn't have anything on those food carts. I think the public agrees, I was the only person in the place at 12 Noon. Thought that was odd (although Yale is not in session, but it was also in teens w/ the wind chill today). I choose 3 soft corn tacos with steak. I got 3 soft flour tacos with steak. Cold steak. I passed on guacamole for $1.25 more, it didn't look worth it. I was overly disappointed in my meal. I paid just over $8 for what equaled school cafeteria quality food. I was not dazzled by all of the toppings. Steak should never be served cold. The service came with that "we don't need your $" attitude. Good. They will never get it again. For $5. Yes FIVE DOLLARS I could have gotten FOUR authentic tacos with freshly cooked steak. I went here with a friend to try their food and, while it was fairly good, it was a little overpriced. My friend and I each got a quesadilla but it was so small. We could've gotten a bigger one for the same price at Moe's or at any restaurant that offers quesadillas, for that matter. In general, the restaurant itself was a little dirty. There were 3 staff members while my friend I were there, and, while we were the only ones there, only 1 of those staff members were working. The one staff member also worked fairly slowly and, as a result, a customer that came in after my friend and I left before getting his order taken because it was taking too long. They were delicious with the perfect amount of spice. The quantity was good and filling as well. I came here following a hike at West Rock, really purely out of hunger desperation and it was the first thing I saw when I parked near the shops at Yale. I figured anything in that little enclave must be good to survive. Wrong! This place is a real Hell hole! I walked in and it was hot, only the door open and 84 degrees outside, but stayed because there was no one else there. Now I know why: I ordered the chicken enchiladas and had to tell them three times with red sauce "salsa roja." They speak Spanish. I speak Spanish. Should not be a problem. It came time to pay, and it was a whopping $20, and another one of those new regular scenarios where one is asked to tip before any kind of service, which is wrong on so many levels. I did it, because I'm always afraid of what service I may get if I don't. They told me to sit down and they would bring it over in two minutes. Great. A couple more people came in and ordered burritos to-go and got them and left as I still sat there. Then, the workers, one-by-one, came out with food for themselves and sat down at tables and began watching videos on their phones. After 10 minutes, I finally asked the woman who took my order in Spanish if my food was going to be coming out. She said, "oh yes, it's in the oven," and went back to eating the food she prepared for herself and watching her phone. Another five minutes passed, and the older gentleman behind the counter shouted, your food is ready. Really? I had tipped them 15%, and then I had to go up and get my own food...?! Whatever. I took the tray to my table, noting what I had received for my more than $20 with tip: two tiny little enchiladas with NO sauce on top. The other half of the foil tray was diced tomatoes. I think they were attempting to make pico de gallo, but failed. Then, inside the enchiladas was some kind of mystery meat that in no way resembled chicken. I have no idea what it was, but it was tepid at best, and rubbery, and dark. I was immediately concerned about eating this food, but I was so hungry I decided to brave it. Time will tell if this was a mistake. They gave me a small cup of rice mixed with beans on the side, also lukewarm at best, and the rice kind of dry and crunchy. I couldn't get out of there fast enough. When I left, not one person working there looked up from their own food or their phones. I implore of others not to go here! read more

Yet another Chipotle clone and right across the street from Salsa Fresca. Unlike SF this joint doesn't hand out free chips and salsa. However, the burritos are slightly better and the service is much much better. Very sweet people work here and own the restaurant. Now I'm giving this place 5 stars because it suits the need you're looking for - inexpensive and tasty tex-mex without a long wait. We went here for the second time this week. Tomatillo is small, with about 5-6 tables, but spread out enough to not crowd the counter and not cram all the seats together. I really dig the food too - you have a choice of burritos, burrito bowls, taco salads, etc. You pick which you want and then you pick a meat (which determines your base cost). What I like is you can add about 10 things without increasing your price. I got a taco salad which begins with lettuce, added chicken ($7.95, I think), dirty Mexican rice, black beans, salsa verde, jalapenos, corn, and tomatoes. Guacamole is an additional cost, which I think is fair, and I didn't opt for it. You get a decent portion to hit the spot. Your food option is made in a Subway-like line fashion where the server keeps moving toward his right and adding all the options you want. Both times I've been here I've left completely satisfied. You get inexpensive tex-mex, you wait behind 1-2 people tops in line to order, and the food is good. read more

I ordered hard shell tacos, and the shells themselves were stale and it was hard to bite into. Next, the protein. The fish batter tasted oily and crumbly, and the fish didn't taste like it was cooked fully. The shrimp was seasoned well but had the opposite problem than the fish as it was completely overcooked.
