Prices have gone up drastically. Ordered a bacon cheeseburger with fries and a medium chocolate milkshake..... $22!! For one meal! To me that's crazy. My total was $35 for my meal and a kids meal. Bathrooms are always gross. A lot of teenagers working (which is good) but who are sometimes rude. read more

We stopped in for lunch after doing some exploring in the area. Nice big and clean building with lots of seating, and nicely decorated. Staff is friendly and efficient. I ordered the chicken sandwich combo, and it was ready in about 5 minutes. Fries were hot, fresh, and perfectly cooked. The chicken sandwich was pretty good too, but could of used a little seasoning. It was a nice visit and treat - but hard to justify the $19 price tag for the combo meal. It was good, but not that good. read more

We asked locals where to eat reasonably around Avon and this place was suggested. It was very busy on a Thursday evening. I just love the 50's vibe with the vinyl seating and chrome. We both chose the cheese burger with a side of macaroni salad. Normally at a fast food place you cannot get a burger medium rare but here you can. I was surprised it was not over cooked and was tasty. The Mac salad was kinda bland but ok. We split one of their homemade hard ice creams(chocolate almond) and it was amazing! Big portion for a small and loaded with roasted almonds. So many almonds we were in heaven. I would definitely come back if in the area (especially for the ice cream). read more

Quick service. No need to tip. That said, the burgers were good but not spectacular. The fries? Frozen. Really. I expect a good burger joint to have fresh cut fries. At least there is ice cream. And that's awesome. Overall, meh. read more

"There's diamonds in the sidewalk the gutters lined in song Dear I hear that beer flows through the faucets all night long There's treasure for the taking, for any hard working man Who will make his home in the American Land" (Bruce Springsteen) What's the quintessential American food? Probably burgers and hot dogs, right? Well since 1955 Tom Wahl's has been dishing them up alongside chicken, fries, rings, and more at their seven Western New York locations. We had a great $23 lunch for two yesterday - a cheeseburger, a Texas Red Hot, fries, and drinks. The Zweigle Red Hot was mine, and it was served split with relish, onions, and ketchup. I can't tell you how good it was! The ordering process was a snap. We ordered at the counter, got a buzzer and our cups for the soda, and within a few minutes the buzzer buzzed signifying our food was ready. What a fun, inexpensive, and very yummy lunch!! read more

What a delicious chocolate milkshake to go with a grilled chicken sandwich complete with tomatoes and lettuce made a yummy lunch upon my visit to my former home area. The staff is friendly and food is hot and tasty. Only one suggestion...a bigger plate would make it simpler to pick up the sandwiches. It is messy to eat, but so tasty!! We always enjoy the &50s diner setting and music too. read more

My boyfriend and I were in town, and he had recommended to check out this place, as it was on his former truck route, and heard locals rave about it, but never had opportunity to stop. They were well-staffed , not a super long wait, larger then anticipated burgers, overall amazing food and larger portions for a fast food burger place. read more

Today my husband and I went to Tom Wahl's in Avon for lunch. The food is not like it used to be, the budget cuts are obvious but the prices way up. My complaint the ice machine near the drink dispensers was empty when we filled our glasses which I filled and sat in a booth. My husband picked up the order and as he was carrying two trays with food he slid and bent backwards to catch his balance straining his back, The ice machine was spewing out ice uncontrollably and was all over the floor. The employee was trying to make it stop. My husband told another employee that ice and water were all over the floor. No one mopped it up, they placed a wet floor sign on another area but not where it was dangerous. His back is strained, pain radiating from center to the left. No one there seemed to have any training in cleaning up spills etc. Several other customers kept telling my husband 'woah! Great save!' As he avoided actually crashing to the ground. It was embarrassing but also troubling enough that they left it like that for someone with less coordination to get seriously injured. What happened to Tom Wahl's? The food, the service, and the safety are all lacking now. read more

Growing up in Rochester, Tom Wahls was a great place to go. Since moving to Buffalo we just don't get there that often. So I was very happy when invited to a wedding and finding out that they were catering the event. The menu was limited but included the most important items. Obviously their cheeseburger, their version of a garbage plate, root beer floats, and ice cream, plus a few other items. I had the cheeseburger and fries followed by a dish of chocolate ice cream. Just seeing the cheeseburger made my mouth water! The burgers are thin, which prefer but huge and covered with gooey melted cheese. Then topped with their meat sauce! Not sure if their ice cream is their own but was delicious. I know others raved about the root beer floats. Only slight disappointment was the fries, not bad but nothing special. Best part was the service. Quick and friendly. They even before departing left out a plate of food for the dog. Even had his name on it! Though I didn't get a picture. Good job Tom Wahls! 2022-62 read more

HOLLER UP AT TOM WAHL'S... Today is pretty busy for 'em. Long line but cashiers are doing fabulous job to keep it going! High fives to 'em! Food send out at good timing in nice pace. Very impressive. I got bacon cheeseburger, coleslaw & cheese curds. I asked for multi grain buns & it did. Awesome!! Bacon cheeseburger w/ multi grain buns is pretty good. Coleslaw is kinda ok & not too bad. Cheese curds is pretty good & better than Minnesota's famous cheese curd, to be honest. Theres so plenty of tables for customers to dine in! Clean! Staff keep it clean to make us comfortable to eat in. Not cold or not hot, it is just perfect temperature inside. Its cozy warm. Would definitely come back here again. 4.5 stars really.. just because of coleslaw is a reason that not impressed me. High five to Tom Wahl's for a good dinner! read more

After five hours in the car, traipsing across New York via Route 20 to avoid the tolls of I-90, there wasn't much that could get me to stop the car. Just short of my final destination in Buffalo, it was the lure of the "black raspberry soft serve" sign that got me to make a U-turn in a pharmacy parking lot for some roadside eats. I had seen the signs for Tom Wahl's earlier on the same road and thought nothing of it. The burger on the billboard looked tasty enough, but not enough to think of filling my stomach before getting to the city on the lake and it's famous beef on weck sandwiches. "Just ice cream. Just one cone and you're done, Lucas. Beef and wings in another hour." That plan fell apart and the little guy in red with horns on my shoulder danced as I ordered a cheeseburger anyway. The smell of freshly cooked beef wafted from the exhaust fans as I got out of the car. I knew I was a goner. The burger was as thin as could be atop the fluffiest roll imaginable. The patty as big as the plate it came on. Ketchup and mustard in proper proportions. Not much to argue there. Within seconds it was gone. I almost went back for a garbage plate, but I had ice cream to contend with. The black raspberry was good, but not as good as the peach soft serve. The raspberry almost had a medicinal flavor to it. It got better as I went along, but the peach is the winner for me. Rolling back east on Monday. I'll tackle the garbage plate then. read more

A staple restaurant in Avon Ny, located on E Main St. Large parking area, up front and on the side. Large covered picnic area out back, perfect place to eat on a beautiful day! Great menu with so many options, I'm a fan of the cheeseburger value meal. A 5oz ground steak with two American slices of cheese. ( I add onions) side of French fries and a medium drink for $11.39. Sometimes I go with crispy bacon... yum! Their homemade root beer is great, even better as a float! Also, milkshakes are amazing too! Stood at ice cream counter for more than 8 minutes and zero workers acknowledged me. Two young ladies were back there. Even if you're that busy, at least make eye contact or say something! Incomprehensible. We overheard them messing up another customer's order. Zero customer service. Zero. Did we leave because not one person acknowledged us? You bet we did. Edit: The management was conscientious and contacted me privately, which was very much appreciated. Thank you. I am willing to give you another chance. Hoping that was just a bad day. read more

Very impressed with the food and service at lunch today. Probably the best cheeseburgers around, huge, tasty, and cooked perfectly. The order takers snd servers were all very friendly and personable. But perhaps the most amazing thing was when I went back in for ice cream and the end of the lunch hour, the manager was thanking his workers for doing a good job during the rush. That's why employees are happy and, in turn, the customers are happy too. Another plus, the pavilion is dog friendly! read more

We normally love Tom Wahl's, but today was different. My husband and I stopped in to get a couple burgers and fries for take out. As if $32.00 for two cheeseburgers, two fries, and one root beer wasn't ridiculous enough, the wait for our food was even worse. Then to top it off, we got home and opened the bag to find that only one of the cheeseburgers was in there. The fries were uncooked and pretty awful. The burger was dry and tasteless. We did call and let them know we were missing a burger. They gave us the option to either come pick it up (a 12 minute ride each way...no thanks) or refund our credit card for the cost of the burger. We chose the refund. Overall a very disappointing experience. read more

I've always liked the food at Tom Wahl's in Avon but today was different. Both my husband and I ordered burgers with cheese and they both came without cheese and were cold even though we picked them up as soon as they were ready. We were there close to closing time so I had to wonder if we were given burgers that had already been cooked and had been sitting around while the grill was cleaned. It was very disappointing. Also, the young lady who took our order needs some training in people skills. read more

Some Pink Floyd fan came up to me while I was in line here. He squeezed my arm so tight that I lost feeling in it. However it had been in pain, so I was grateful that I could no longer feel the pain. I said "thank you, it feels comfortably numb now." He responded, "oh yeah? Well, all in all, you're just another pr**k in Tom Wahl's." Get: Their burger with extra meat sauce, but don't call it a burger What else: Good custard, good home made root beer And what else: We don't need no education Are you sure?: Yes, and we don't need no thought control Any other issues?: No dark sarcasm in the classroom Any shout-outs for anyone?: Teacher leave them kids alone If someone "drives in" to the place and the side of the building collapses, then it becomes "Gone Walls." Tom Wahl's has a very patronizing and comically annoying sign asking you please not to call their Burger a Burger. Apparently burger is a dirty word here. It's a "Ground Round." Perhaps someone should perform a Ground Round-house kick to whoever banned the word burger, and then they can roll a Round on the Ground for a bit. Just kidding. Other that that interesting and quirky idiosyncracy, the best thing about Tom Wahl's is indeed the Ground Round - with extra meat sauce. And it's definitely the standout dish and restaurant in the tiny little town of Avon. And popular with all the Avon Ladies. Though not too popular if they want to keep their figures. This is the flagship location of what has now become a local chain - and it's *the* location to visit for your first Tom Wahl's experience, for sure. If there's one section (south and west face of the building) of the restaurant where S & M "top" people hang out looking for victims, then those are the "Dom Walls." So more about this Ground Round. The roll is fantastic, the sauce is juicy and delicious, and the burger itself is too large for the bun, steaming hot and wonderful. This sort of "meat sauce burger" is really only found in Rochester, and Tom Wahl's makes one of the best 5 versions of it you'll find. Jim's Ground Round, Wimpy's, Schaller's and Nick Tahou's are the other members of the top 5, by the way. If they have pictures of people eating their food all over the place, that's just the "Nom Walls." The custard was good an the small was an enormous size portion, but it was $3, and I found it annoying that they didn't have a baby size version for 2 or less, because I didn't need that much ice cream. It was tasty but nowhere near the level of Abbott's or LuGia's. If they paint their entire restaurant a French shade of Apple-green, then they have "Pomme Walls." I also tried the home made Root Beer, and while I didn't like it as much as Mug N Bun in Indianapolis, it did taste very fresh and unique and homemade, so that also scores a 5 from me. Also, the service was pretty good and fairly friendly, and I love how busy it is and packed full of every kid in Avon. 5 stars all round, for sure. If you like this burger, please also try Wimpy, Schaller's, Nick Tahous and Jim's Ground Round of Spencerport. Garland says: The Soviets helped built a subpar version of this place in East Berlin, so a lot people don't know Reagan meant tear down that "Wahl." And of course any place that names itself after a Pink Floyd album, as well as Tom Selleck, Sawyer, Thumb and the guy that used to chase Jerry around in the cartoons, is alright with me. read more

My business partner said this place was worth checking out so we did. I'm told the root beer is homemade so I had to have it. I like root beer and this was different, in a good way. Tasted like a root beer float. Cool. Ordered the Swiss mushroom burger. It was awesome! Hand pressed, big on a hard roll with plenty of mushrooms and Swiss melting all over the burger and mushrooms. I got tomato and lettuce. The fries were awesome crinkle cut and there were a ton of them. Plenty of seating and parking. There's something about a great burger and these guys have them. This is the mothership Tom Wahl's... still worth a trip. While times have changed, the retro 50's vibe of the O.G. Whale's still pervades. Stopped by the other day to get the classic "Wahlburger" (not to be confused with Marky Mark's Boston restaurant of the same name), order of fries and "homemade" root beer. While I miss the old layout of the joint, the food's still fresh, hot & tasty. I just wish they'd bring back the Caesar Burger... oh, and since they share a common lineage, they honor Bill Gray's coupons (last I checked). Quality may still "predominate" at Don's Original, but it makes regular stops here as well! read more

Going "back home" almost always brings back memories of burgers, mugs of frosty root beer, ice cream and frozen custard stands. Tom Wahl's is one of those places that brings the nostalgia of my youthful experiences back to life. Coming here with my daughter brought back wonderful memories of my dad bringing me here as a young boy. The overall look has changed since I was a kid, with the dining and kitchen area having an open look and the addition of the neon '50's look. The food is better than McD's with a much better menu variety. Seating is plentiful and the quality of service is a notch above the national fast food chains. read more
