The entire process was remarkable in that, unlike others, Dave kept his appointments on schedule. He personally inspected the roof and delivered a review of his proposal in tremendous detail. He has a warehouse with all of the material he needed for my roof, so no excuses about shipping delays, cost escalations or backorders. He promised a mid May installation and actually came a week early. He even got the building permit from the Town, which some other contractors seem to forget. His crew was well-prepared, setting up tarps to keep the old roofing out of the shrubs and lawn, got the entire roof (36 squares) done by around 4:00 pm. Clean up was impeccable. New gutters were installed a few days later by very knowledgeable craftsmen who made some upgrades that were much appreciated. Once we agreed on the scope of work, I was sent a final estimate, which I signed. Tim texted me and said I could provide a 1/3 deposit via a bank ACH deposit. I said I'd like to pay by credit card. He said I would be charged a 3.5% fee if I use a credit card. I said I didn't want to pay a fee and would pay by check. He said I could partially pay by credit card. I repeated I wasn't going to pay a 3.5% fee and mentioned MA General Laws Chapter 140D, Section 28A--businesses cannot charge a credit card fee. He texted back that we should part ways and he would not do the project. I was surprised he got so wound up because I'd said early on in the text exchange that I would pay by check. It seems that Tim is a bit of a hot head, and he left me hanging. You may want to think twice before calling Sexton. There are plenty of other roofers you can spend your hard-earned money with who will treat you with professional courtesy.

Slav (Construction Manager) is an expert at his job, and he and his helper arrived on time and even stayed late in the evening to finish the job in one day, because I work from home and could not have construction noise going on the next day. They requested a 1/3 deposit that could not be paid electronically. This should have been my first clue. Then it took a month for the window to arrive. They then scheduled and showed up with a regular window. And they of course ripped out the existing window before checking. So I had to have the wrong window installed and then wait six weeks for the correct panes to arrive. Then spend two weeks going back and forth to schedule a new installation date. Then they flew in and out on the date and I finally had my window. And it took only 10 minutes following the job being finished before someone showed up from the company and demanded payment. Not throughout the whole process was anything given emphasis until it was time for them to be paid. Avoid at all costs.

He was proactive about thinking ahead (advised me to get paint in advance, to match new clapboard he would paint after finishing the new roof), shared his knowledge (didn't just fix the problem but showed me the source: in my case, a rotted beam causing water to leak into the house), discussed various solutions (how the slope and location of the roofs on the main structure vs the bump-out prompted different considerations). He recommended a particular approach and materials (but was amenable to customer preferences) and discussed pros/cons (options for a rain diverter; shingles vs tar or whatever the other roofing surface was). He's licensed, insured and a hard worker who arrived on time, then worked steadily all through the day. I was equally impressed that he was respectful of my home (wiped his boots when entering the house; quickly shut the door on a cold winter day while we discussed the project; didn't want to sit down because he had been outside on the roof, sawing wood, waterproofing, laying shingles -- things like that). And I was pleased that he gave a very thorough estimate and came in on budget and finished on schedule. Previous to hiring him, I spoke with two people who Tyler did work for. Matthew came and looked at it and recommended a pressure treated fence to match the rest of the deck. He looked closely at it, took pictures and did an absolutely beautiful job.
