I cannot recommend James Associates for accounting or tax related services. As a new business…read morecustomer, James Associates filed my corporate federal and state tax returns so late that I was assessed over $2000 in penalties and interest. My W-2's were also provided so late that I had to file for an extension. The IRS code on the late issuance of W-2 forms allows for much higher penalties had they been informed of the late W-2 issuance. The late payment of the $456 MA corporate tax I incurred could have been avoided by informing me that the payment was due in March rather than waiting until October to tell me it was due. For reasons that are still not completely clear to me, after speaking with people in the MA DOR corporate and personal tax offices, I was informed that I would be required to file an additional Mass corporate return for the next year even though my returns were marked final indicating that I was ceasing business operations at year's end. When I mentioned this to James Associates they confirmed that I would need to file again for the following year even though I had clearly stated verbally and in writing well before the due dates that I intended to cease doing business in the current filing year. Because the Mass corporate return is derivative of the federal return I was obligated to do an additional federal and state return for the following year even though the IRS had confirmed that no additional return would be necessary. Realizing in March that James Associates was not going to issue my W-2 or have my corporate return completed in time to for me to estimate my personal tax liability, I dropped off a letter in early March requesting assistance on estimating my personal tax liability so I could avoid underpayment penalties. I got no response so I did my own W-2 and federal 1120S and provided those forms to H&R Block so they could estimate my tax liability. I also submitted my versions of the W-2 and 1120S forms to James Associates in the hope that it would expedite their completion of the filings. The filings were made 7 months later in the last week of the extension period for personal tax returns. The W-2 and 1120S filed were identical, from a tax perspective, to the versions of the forms that I had provided in March. Having incurred a significant number of business expenses in the year after closure I spoke to an IRS representative who informed me that the IRS would accept corporate expenses incurred after closure of the business as offsetting personal income. But they qualified this by saying I should consult with a tax professional. Reluctantly I called James Associates and asked if Rich James was in. The receptionist said he was and asked who was calling. I identified myself and waited much longer than it should have taken to transfer my call. The receptionist finally returned and informed me Rich was not in although she thought he was. I informed her that I had been advised by the IRS to talk to a tax professional regarding business expenses incurred after business closure related to my personal return and that James Associates was familiar with all of the information pertinent to this question. I never got a call back. Fortunately I was able to find a Tax office within walking distance of Davis Square who freely gave me advice on the above as well as how to get the business closed in the eyes of the MA DOR and on how to possibly receive an abatement on one of the penalties I was assessed. Finally I reached out to a friend who is a member of the Mass Bar Association who worked in his father's accounting firm when he was young. He advised me to request that James Associates provide me with information regarding their liability insurance policy so I could make a claim against it for the penalties and extra expenses incurred. I submitted this request in writing. After waiting several months with no response I finally dropped off a letter documenting my dissatisfaction and giving James Associates a chance to respond before I documented my experience on Yelp. Predictably I got no response.

Some Thoughts on the way Citizens Bank Handled a Recent Branch Incident in December 2022…read more I banked with Citizens (and its predecessor banks) in Burlington, Vermont and Cambridge, Massachusetts, the former for 27 years and the latter for over 40 years. For all of that time I had cordial relations at both locations and with the managers and tellers resident in the two branches I used in each city. Burlington branch is terrific. Central Square Cambridge has become another story. For most of my 40 years of patronage the branch served me well. I was a satisfied customer. Then late in 2022 the management and many of the tellers in that branch were changed over wholesale. They do not know their customer and apparently don't care to. They changed long standing practices which led to a heated dust-up with one of the new tellers transferred from elsewhere (my fault for losing my temper with her and her fault for total inflexibility in insisting on rejecting a deposit containing a check deposited the old way for more than a decade). Ironically, after I left the branch I walked to the Portland Street branch nearby and deposited the rejected check (so resisted by that new teller) without incident. Then instead of asking for a meeting about the incident, the bank simply sent a pre-emptive letter closing my seven accounts, corporate and personal, blowing up my ability to operate and receive direct deposits (SSN check and other links). The letter said the decision was final, do not contact the bank. The letter gave 30 days grace but was sent to my Vermont office so only 10 days remained when I returned there from Cambridge. Needless to say when an action like this is taken the bank knows full well the disruptive effect it will have and doubtless intended that. It has taken hours upon hours to restore my ability to operate my business and personal accounts Despite over four decades of fairly good experience with Citizens (and its predecessor banks) I cannot recommend a bank that acts in such a summarial manner and potential customers reading this report should not take the risk of banking there either. Sincerely, Jack McMullen

He lived in a nursing home, had no property and just a couple bank accounts totaling less than 3K. Another bank had no problem transferring his funds to me after I showed a death certificate and documentation that I was his next of kin. He also had $200 in a Citizen's account. $200!!!! After hours on the phone getting conflicting information about how to close his account and then spending hours in person on my days off trying to find someone at a branch who would speak to me about closing it because I wasn't the account holder, I was finally told that I had to drive one hour each way to the courthouse and pay $120 to file paperwork that I'm his executor!!! For $200!!!! It's not worth it so I just decided to leave the money where it is. Fast forward several months, Citizen's keeps sending statements to his old address that someone there then must forward to me!!!! I called again today and they won't change the address because it's not my account even though his death certificate is on file with them!!! Now I will be forced on another day off to pay the $120 just to have them stop sending statements to an incorrect address!!!!

As someone who used to manage my property (from long distance), I knew the pain and efforts involved in dealing with tenants...and honestly..after a few years, I wanted nothing to do with managing a rental from far, far away. I remembered calling and leaving a voicemail message with Southpaw about my desire to find a property management company to help me rent out and manage my unit...and..to my surprise, I got a call the same day back..and all within several hours when I totally wasn't expecting it! Within a few days...I worked with Kyle to sign my rental agreement, provide him information and access to my rental unit...and the unit was already rented out...all within 24 hours of signing my agreement to have Kyle manage my property! Wow..I was impressed! What impressed me more was Kyle's ability to manage rental properties. He took great care of tenants and property owners alike. He's fair..and not just siding with either side. He is not hesitant to tell me as an owner what I needed to do to make sure my tenants are happy (and he's happy to do the same to keep me happy dealing withe thing from repair to HOA as well). I am also very happy to see that...with Southpaw...the need to manage my rental property or handhold anything..is pretty much nil! Kyle took care of everything! And..I just saw..that I recently gave a consent to continue renting out my unit/extend rental offers to my current tenants..and he already had them signed extending for another year of rental at my unit ahead of expiration of an existing lease! That's a testament to Kyle and Southpaw's competencies and proactive approach to management! I love it that..for once..I can really sit back and trust that Southpaw can handle my rental on my behalf! For a long while, I worry about having to sell my unit if the property couldn't be rented out..but with Southpaw...I didn't have to worry about sale of my property anymore..because true passive rental income from this property is now a reality for me!
