There is a place that he had the concrete frame next to the wall lower than the foundation (about .5" deep & 1' wide). The footing varies in width and in some places close to 6" and some up to about 7" - doesn't work great when you use 2"x4"s instead of 2"x6"s. His contract didn't include drywall, but he left a mess for the drywaller. Since I didn't monitor his work on a day to day basis, the project continued - he installed windows that were not in straight - left & right / top & bottom varied up to .5". In response to the comments: I'm not going to get into a he said / she said discussion with him on yelp. I changed the review AFTER his comments which was also after I had other contractors over to help finish what he did. Unfortunately, I didn't monitor his work every day and they pointed out all the flaws. I don't know 1/2 of what he is talking about. He wrote the contract and he breached the contract - he said "I don't care what the contract says, I'm not following the contract." I didn't suggest to any neighbors to use him. I have neighbors that thought, since I selected him, he must be good and asked for quotes. Unfortunately, we were all wrong. I hadn't spoken to either of them about the work, prior to them contacting him. Regarding the project plan, he wrote a milestone plan and no scope changes were added after that date and he didn't keep to it. He was here for a month, including 2 full work weeks after the final scope change (not 3 days); based on the timeline given in writing on the day of the final scope change, he should have been finished and wasn't. One day he said he couldn't work because the AC guy needed to come. The AC guy wasn't available immediately (Paul expected the work done the very same day the AC person was called). In retrospect the AC work has NOTHING to do with the primary project and could have been done 3 years from now & it would have made no difference. If Paul wasn't available to finish later, I could have screwed in the 1'x2' piece of plywood needed after the AC repair. Additionally, I have never said a "costly overrun". I have said that his lack of planning costs money. For example, if he thought ahead he could have done something that would have taken 20minutes and will now take hours. By the way, the work involves actually removing the roof, not simply hanging a few wires and the quote Paul gave was $500 not $750 (this is a "fair price" based on the work that NOW needs to be done to complete the job, but no way would let anyone from Hutchinson Construction do any work around my property).

I sent him an email to tell him this news. I told him the woman he called my partner was my wife and that she should be included in all correspondence. I provided him with the proper spelling of both of our names and added her to the email chain. He replies and not only does he spell my name wrong, he does not include my wife by replying all. I bring my disappointment/frustration about this to his attention by emailing that I expect strict attention to detail for a $100k job that will tear our home apart. Replying all and spelling names correctly really should not be difficult. Next thing I know, he sends me an email (again, my wife not included) telling me that he spoke to his architect and they were too busy to do our job for the "foreseeable future". This was a lie. He didn't like my "nasty tone" and lied about the architect to get out of the job. Can you imagine? He can't spell a simple name correctly and has never heard of the reply all button and I am the problem??? When I called him out for being inept and homophobic suddenly it was all "I have done lots of work for gay people" as it is inevitable in my city. Bottom line...this man could not stand to be called out on his BS, lied and then pulled the "I know tons of gays" card. I was not nasty, I was direct. And as he saw me as beneath him as a woman/lesbian. Of course I was "nasty". Total piece of work. BEWARE!

It was a nightmare for at least a year, but it was finally over with Court Judgement of $0 on a civil matter he filled AGAINST US in small claims. This is how Mr. Baum works. He gave us a book he wrote about contractors, and he then convinced us to sign an architectural design agreement for $8000. with a Deposit of $2000. up-front. Our verbal agreement with him was that our remodel was to be done in 5 months due to out of country guests coming. After 5 weeks of nothing happening with our project Mr. Baum came over to tell us we had to postpone our remodel and not start till the following year. Keep in mind he did absolutely nothing on our project and had our deposit of $2000. With feeling uncomfortable with him and his short temper flaring, we terminated his services. He then requested the balance of $6000 in which we questioned him as to why we would owe him that. His answer was," well you signed a contract ". It was Mr. Baum that breached the contract. He then proceeded to have his lawyer send us a Demand letters plus Legal Fees. He then proceeded to File a lien on my property. Later on, Mr. Baum file civil matter in small claims court for the balance against us. He wanted it all !! Justice Prevailed in court: $0 Judgment and Removal of lien from my property. We truly feel that this is how he operates (for extra money) because there are other similar reviews written on Mr. Baum (Baum Construction) Beware!!

One plumber could install a gas line only, another plumber could install a gas line and the gas cooktop but not the hood, and an appliance installation technician could not install the cooktop because he could not cut into the existing granite top. So I found Max of MRI Construction and Remodeling on Yelp, and he said that he could do the work within that original scope -- cooktop, hood, and gas line -- but that we should anticipate a backup plan in case the granite cracked during installation. Because we plan to live in this house for as long as possible, we decided to go through a full kitchen renovation. We had a prior experience with another general contractor who was impossible to get a hold of and who could not ensure the quality of the subcontractors he hired, and interviewed another general contractor who gave us the impression that we would have to engage with suppliers and subcontractors more than seemed feasible. We are happy to say that we just finished our kitchen renovation last week! And it was finished a week earlier than scheduled. We are thankful to Max and his team of subcontractors! We are really happy with the final kitchen, given how much we cook at home. And surprisingly the process was easy despite its size and time of 6 weeks. Max has the strengths and qualities you want for your construction projects: he's incredibly responsive, honest and communicative, and willing and able to troubleshoot issues that come up, as they invariably do, both small and large. He makes recommendations if you ask and gives you options for decisions for which there are too many options. He works with an amazing group of subcontractors who are experts in their craft. There was an exception with one subcontractor but Max was able to get that course-corrected so that the project finished strong. We appreciate his integrity and his willingness to ensure that the project meets your needs and expectations. The painting of the wood sections was done very well. I also had them install a new front door which they did a very nice job with. The only minor issue is the final walk-through. I had a couple small requests regarding removing some cables that were hanging down the side of the house and finishing a threshold on the front door. They finished the threshold, but that was it. One of the five or six last step items I requested. Overall though, they did an excellent job. I highly recommend Builder Boy!

Unfortunately, KC has changed for the worse...MUCH worse. Over the years, I've hired them for many projects, but would never ever use them again. I have also recommended them countless times to friends and associates but can no longer do so with a clear conscience because when you refer someone to a company, it puts your own reputation on the line. I have personally fallen victim to unprofessional business practices at the hands of KC, and have received a lot of very negative feedback from those I have recommended them to as well. I hope I can spare someone the hassle and anguish I have been forced to go through. :::UPDATE::: Regarding your reply to my review. Why would you say that you are "here for me" to handle any warranty issues when I had been asking for almost 5 years to get the defective front doors repaired after they failed in less than a year? You took so long to address the problem that the door company finally told you that they were now put of warranty! I have MANY witnesses to this fact, and will now have to pay out of pocket to repair and/or replace something that you should have taken care of many years ago.
